Well, I imagine she'd try to escape more often if she knew the truth. The web of lies was to make her complacent about her confinement, thinking her "mother" was just trying to keep her safe, rather than keep her prisoner.

I think that's also what annoyed me about Gothel's plan, besides the abuse - it just wasn't very smart. Better to insinuate herself as a beloved nurse who the girl could never bear to be parted with than to kidnap a royal child and hope she never became overly interested in the outside world for the next fifty years.

It really depends a great deal on how YOU act once you move to a new fandom. If you then put all your effort into that fandom and those people and ignore your old friends? Well, they have EVERY right to drop you, too.

You need to learn that friendship requires effort on both parts, yours too.

Hm, yeah. I don't really sympathize with her, because lol way to overdo it, lady, but I also don't underestimate what youthful immortality would be worth to me if it was ever presented to me.

I never believed in those figures, even as a kid, but I'm glad to enjoy the idea of believing in them at any age, it's a lot of fun.

Re: human x non-human ships

My first thought was Babylon 5, where *the* main canon het pairing (from the second season) is a nicely, slowly developing human/alien relationship. This was the ship I compared (almost) everything to in the last fifteen years.

Why would you stop saying you play video games if you...play video games? Is there only one kind of video game playing that's valid, just because some silly people assume if you say you're a gamer, you must therefore be addicted to all the latest incarnations of games? Bulltwaddle, OP. Those assumptions suck.

Oh, wow. I really loved his reviews; his personality and grasp of entertainment was just so fun and intelligent. He'll be missed.

I like this comment.

Re: are you afraid of dying?

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2013-04-05 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not so much afraid of dying as I am of being dead. Dying is temporary, but death, as far as we know, is forever.

Re: Fainting

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Once (about ten year ago) I was cleaning shoes sitting on the floor, then (quite fast) I stood on a chair to take something down from the top of the cupboard... the next thing I knew I was on the floor again, desperately clutching the leg of the kitchen table. It was a blood-pressure-related fainting, and it was almost familiar as I experienced the dizziness (vertigo?) before that, and since then several times, but never (ever ever) this drastic.
But fainting can be caused by a ridiculously lot of (common) things, so it's better to check this, especially if it had been a first time.

Re: Bioshock 2 Racism Wank

Not exclusively. One of the top comments I read was from someone who didn't care and didn't know what the storyline was and still called the game a racist piece of shit or something... I can understand when people react to comments like that (not... excessively of course, what is it with tumblr and death threats??), but for just feeling uncomfortable that irritated me too, I think people were mixing up two stances on the issue.
Or maybe people were just being douchebags about it I don't know.... I wouldn't give anyone shit for not playing say a zombie game if they're afraid of it I don't see why it should be different with other themes that can upset people.

Re: Fat

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2013-04-05 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
1. When people complain about being fat or ugly, they often are looking for back pats and for someone to tell them they're pretty, so if you say either of those things chances are someone is going to tell you you're fine the way you are.

This, homigod. Or commiseration. In my case, I usually I default to vague encouragement, like "you'll succeed at whatever you want to do about it", no matter what they actually say about their weight. One thing people rarely want honest opinions about is weight, and I have no desire to provide what isn't wanted.

Don't know who the character is, but she looks beautiful to me in that photo. Being "old" doesn't make someone not good looking.

I would imagine "telling them off" and "not engaging whatsoever" are two different things. Like, there's a difference between just disagreeing, and swanning in and holding court like because one doesn't agree with the upset, or feel the upset themselves, that therefore means any upset is inherently ridiculous and shouldn't exist. Granted, this has less to do with race than with some people being pretentious fucks by nature, but has struck me, personally, as particularly obnoxious when people with majority representation in the media being argued over do it against minority critics over, and over, and over again, in the same ways, often with the same arguments. It's eerie, sometimes.

And it's a shitty gift.

I don't think "sympathizing" is the right word though? Doesn't that include justifying? I mean, yeah lots of people want to live forever, but IDK.

I work as a maid in a hotel during the summer.
While cleaning their room, two drunk guests (very tall, imposing guys) started making propositions and talking dirty to me. One of them even got naked and they wouldn't let me get to the door to ask for help. I was considering fighting my way out when their friends showed up.
Thankfully they were sober and controlled the other two so that I could get out of there, but I shiver to think what could have happened.
From that day on, if the guests are inside, I keep my broom with me at all times and refuse to even come inside if I they are drunk. I've got in trouble with my bosses for doing that but fuck them, they don't pay me enough to risk it.

yes. non fandom for this reason, even though I love the doctor. every doctor.

just never her anymore.

so it can happen.
