Maybe you will like the fandom if you try it??

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. I guess maybe I would, but I'm not interested in having a new fandom right now. I'm happy in the one I'm in.

Also, I haven't watched the movies, but I'm not fond of superhero fandoms. I've tried Batman, Spider-Man, et cetera.... It just doesn't do it.

Seeing as Avengers stole half my fandom (the other half divided itself between other shows), so not a lot of sympathy on my part. Because what fandom did YOU desert?

The Avengers/Marvel fandom has been the most awesome, accepting fandom I've ever been in. I haven't seen any ship wars, the part of fandom I'm in is mostly, oh, I ship so and so with this character, but if you like them with character B, here's some fic that's good.....have fun! As opposed to when I was in the Xena fandom, for example, and if you didn't ship Xena/Gabrielle you were a homophobic misogynist. (Perhaps I just outed myself as really old, but you get the point.)

At one point, someone posted something on the Darcy Lewis tag on tumblr that was pretty derrogatory towards her character, and the response was "let's all write fic/make fan art and be friends!"

So say what you want about Avengers/Marvel fandom, but it's my happy place.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! It is a really nice fandom! I love you, Avengers fandom!

That said, I understand how the OP feels, since I felt like one of the holdouts in my last fandom when everyone left for H5O and other stuff I wasn't interested in. I know the feeling.

Wow, yes, so much this. And I couldn't put my finger on why, almost a year later, this movie is still my go-to fandom. But it is just such a gosh-darned pleasant place to be. The fans build this whole interactive experience of art and fic and photosets and shipping, but all the shipping is pretty much, "your ship might not be my ship but wow that's great art/fic well done!" It's just lovely, really.

I mean, heck, look at the Clint/Coulson crew. Almost any other fandom I've ever been a part of, if there was a super-obscure-nowhere-near-canon slash ship and one of the men involved had a woman that he was involved with in canon (or close enough to no nevermind), the shippers would constantly be tearing her down and every fic that got the two guys together would have to show the woman as being "unworthy" or just a terrible person.

I've read almost every CC fic on AO3, and I haven't seen one like that.

I think I get why a lot of fandom folk feel like their friends left them for this fandom--it's just a very nice place to be, dangit. I won't say drama-free, but relatively so.

If all your friends have moved on to the same fandom, wouldn't that make it easier for you to get into it? I mean, I went into the Harry Potter fandom nearly blind during the msscribe controversy, and immediately ran away. It wasn't until years later when I saw some people watching StarKid that they showed me that the HP fandom was a nice place and I could start enjoying it again.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Are these internet friends or RL friends? Internet friends are liable to leave you behind in favor of the next shiny new thing they see, so it might be best to let them go and stay in your own niche. There's really no use following them anywhere because as soon as they get tired of their current fandom, they will flock to a new one.

If these are RL friends, maybe you can let them know how you feel and find something non-Avengers related to talk to them about. If they're as good of friends as you say they are, they'll listen.
truxillogical: (Default)

[personal profile] truxillogical 2013-04-19 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
That was my thought to. In high school, my RL friends and I had almost all of our fandoms in common. Well, only one or two people in our crew bought the anime and manga, so of course the fandoms were shared.

But now, we're adults, and we don't all like the same things at all. I mean, Person A and Person B might like Item 1 while Person B and Person C like item 2, so there's a little bit of stacked sharing. But, y'know, we're real human beings and we've been through a lot. Sometimes I'll be in the room when a bit talk about Insert Video Game Here breaks out and I feel a wee bit left out, but mostly, hey, it's cool, I can roll with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

frankly, this is why I finally got out of fandoms all together. my online friends moved on to other things, by the time I got there and caught up (due to real life, jobs, money lack) they'd moved on to the next new shiny.

I couldn't keep up and they just jumped from one fandom to the next with no sense of sticking around.

show was done? BORED NAO MOVING ON.

after a while I got tired of trying to keep up. as I wasn't keeping up, they didn't find any use for me and ceased talking to me.

so I left my online life behind.

I still lurk around the edges of fandom but I don't engage any more. I find that I'm happier that way, in the long run because I can enjoy at my own pace and not have to worry about 'keeping up.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Man, you sound just like a friend of mine (same story, different fandom), and all I've got is I hope you aren't bitter about the Avengers at them because that just ruins it for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fun movie. You don't have to invest time into it to enjoy it, but you'll see why so many are in the fandom. I'm not myself, but I do like the movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
give this movie a chance and the fandom is not bad tho not the best fandom either

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Man, OP, it kind of sucks that so many people are saying "just follow your friends!" A few even seem to be implying that you're a bad friend if you don't follow them, which I don't get. If you don't like it, you don't like it. And that's fine. Just try not to be too bitter about it and not to blame Avengers fandom for having wooed away your friends. And maybe try to find new friends.

You can still stay friends with people, even if they no longer share a fandom with you. It's not always easy, especially if fandom was the only thing you had in common with them, but it's still possible. Best to you.

1. the fandom didn't STEAL anything. People's interests change. It happens and they're allowed to have different interests, just as you are.

2. If all you had in common with these friends was your fandoms and you don't want anything to do with what they're into now... time to move on anyway.

3. That's a ridiculous reason not to watch something you could potentially enjoy. Seriously? "WAH EVERYONE ELSE LIKES IT SO I WON'T!" get over yourself.

So instead of giving the movie a chance just in case you like it and can join your friends in the fun, you're refusing to watch it?

Yes. You are stupid.

I don't like comic books. I don't like comic book related stuff, and I don't like superheroes. So I feel you there, OP.

I don't like the Avengers because for a while it pretty much invaded my Tumblr dash EVERYWHERE. EVERY POST WAS AVENGERS. It was just so goddamn annoying. I don't care that people got into the fandom but it just seemed like everyone got into it because it was the 'cool' thing to do.

I don't plan on ever seeing that overrated, over-produced movie ever.

Don't understand a lot of these comments. Why should anyone force something on themselves, when they don't want to? If they already know they don't want to watch it, how much would they enjoy it when they force themselves to?

I am not into superhero movies or comics, and I tried watching The Avengers during a flight just because so many people I knew were raving about it. I didn't even make it through the first 30 minutes because it just didn't hold my interest at all because of the whole superhero theme. I just... don't care for that at all, no matter how great a movie is supposed to be. I ended up watching Snow White and the Huntsmen instead. Go figure.

Well, since you already know you're being stupid, it would be pointless to suggest that perhaps if you would get over your knee-jerk dislike of superheroes enough to spend a couple of hours watching a movie, possibly you would have enjoyed their new fandom as well?

Movies can surprise you. Personally, I thought Iron Man was boring as toast until his movie (and I really did try to like him). I couldn't have cared less about the Hulk until watching Ruffalo bring something unique and honest to the role. I hate scary movies; I loved Cabin in the Woods. Romances bore me to tears; Love Actually is one of my favorite movies.

Genres are just that. They're genres. They're...they're a colored clay. If someone makes a fantastic sculpture out of it, are you going to dismiss it because you don't like the color yellow?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you're only talking about fandom friends and not RL best friends. It's pretty ridiculous that a simple fandom could end your relationship with your 'best friends' and force to you find new ones. My best friends and I are all in many different fandoms and we still manage to stay very close.

I'm not sure I understand.

Why can't you be in more than one fandom at a time?

fandom: I'm apparently doing it wrong.
