I've said it before, I'll say it again; I'll keep saying it until it happens:

I live for the day that there's an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes that doesn't feature Irene Adler or James Moriarty in ANY WAY WHATSOEVER.

LOL!

Oh, man I have that somewhere, I should watch it...

I just want MILVERTON. IS THAT SO HARD PEOPLE.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
God, I know, right?

Although I tend to subscribe to the theory that Milverton was one of the agents or pawns of Moriarty so I think if you're going to do Milverton (and you totally should) it makes sense to end up doing Moriarty as well. But if you're going to do Moriarty, for God's sake, do Milverton.

Watch Elementary. The episode "Dead Man's Switch" is my favorite adaptation of good ol' Charlie, ever. (I might be biased because I've decided Elementary is the best thing that's ever happened to CBS after Cold Case, so...)

Regardless, the extremely controversial topics were handled sensitively, and you should go watch it. Seriously, right now.

I want Abbey Grange. And Gloria Scott, though that might be questionable - the idea of a modern adaptation trying to do young!Holmes, college!Holmes, with a friend who isn't Watson, makes me a bit nervous. Oh, and also Copper Beeches, can I have Violet Hunter please? And, hmm, a clean version of the Bruce Partington Plans. And yes, definitely also Milverton. It's fascinating to watch Holmes completely flip his lid at the man.

There's always Granada, of course, but it'd be nice to see more Holmes stories that aren't mix'n'matched versions of Final Problem, Scandal in Bohemia, The Sign of Four and the Hound of the Baskervilles.

I was going to suggest The Great Mouse Detective, but then I remembered that Ratigan is the small furry animal equivalent of Moriarty.

Sorry. :(

Yeah, he's even referred to as "the Napoleon of Crime"...

He's one of the ones I like, though... well, he's voiced by Vincent Price, so... yeah.

Hmmm... Vincent Price...

I was cringing when both Moriarty and Adler popped up in Elementary... But I ended up enjoying what they did with them this season. (I can't say much more without getting into spoilers for the finale.)

While I agree the dealt with it better and more creatively than most, it was still... well, those two characters in the adaptation. Oh, and as much as they played with the idea, they STILL turned Irene into a goddamn love interest.

Hell, I'm not sure I'd mind Irene in an adaptation if they'd COMPLETELY remove the love interest aspect, on both their parts. Any bets on that happening any time soon?

Oh, man, when Irene was first mentioned, I groaned out loud because I knew what happened at the end of Risk Management was going to happen. But I didn't expect the finale to happen, and I ended up enjoying it immensely. (I thought it was better than a certain other two adaptations of Irene Adler, anyway.)

Me too. Or at least not have Irene Adler as the lover/in love with Sherlock. Can't she be fierce on her own?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well. Y'know. The Seven Per-Cent Solution wasn't complete crap or anything. Mind you, Moriarty was a fevered cocaine hallucination, and nothing more, in that one.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:45 am (UTC)(link)

Oh, and Irene only showed up at the end, and was totally subtext.

[personal profile] fenm 2013-05-24 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ya know, maybe I should clarify:

It's possible to do Adler and Moriarty well (as seen in Elementary). I just get tired of:

-None of the other interesting characters in Holmes canon getting adapted because the writers keep going back to the same few stories over and over instead of looking through the rest of canon. There are 60 stories; Adler is only in one and Moriarty is only in two. Even counting the fact that Hound of the Baskervilles gets adapted fairly often, there's still over 55 stories most adaptations ignore.

-The need for every show/movie series/etc to have a big bad. I'm not a fan of this anyway honestly, and when, in Holmes adaptations, it's always the same big bad... Yeah.

-The need to give Sherlock a love interest. Cuz God forbid anyone think he might be anything other than straight. Not to mention; there are other strong, intelligent women in canon; at least mix it up and have him interested in someone other than the woman who, in canon, was MARRIED.

Eh, I thought the Granada adaptations were quite good, ( and afaik they used only Doyle's dialog.)

And I'll take Victorian opera singer Irene over skanky dominatrix Irene.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think they mostly used Doyle's dialogue, yes. However, I'm pretty sure they mixed it around some. I can't remember specific incidences, but I'm almost positive that some things said by Holmes in the books were said by Watson in Granada, or Lestrade, and a few vice versa as well. Granada did a few odd things in places, and tended to put characters into stories they weren't in originally (Mycroft showed up in some random places, from what I remember, and I think Lestrade replaced Gregson a time or two as well).

None of which really matters to me, because Granada!Holmes is basically awesome, and Colin Jeavons as Lestrade is adorable.

Well, in fairness, I think a lot of the really awesome, brilliant elements of the canon are impossible to adapt, or at least really hard. It's really hard to adapt the tone, the atmosphere, Doyle's description of a specific time and place and the air of adventure he manages to convey. And on the other hand, the cheesy weak stuff is easy to adapt, but it's also familiar and accessible - "evil super-genius" is a lot easier to get than "anxiety about colonialism and the exotic manifesting itself in the metropole".

But I definitely agree that adaptations could do a lot better than they currently seem to be doing, and that there's a ton of scope for adaptations in the canon that no one seems to be interested in exercising at the moment, in favor of simply re-making the same 5 bits of the canon that everyone is familiar with over and over and over.

Agreed, but there are plenty of other villains in Holmes canon that are pretty easy to understand/adapt to a 21st century setting... Charles Augustus Milverton (blackmailing asshole), Jethro Rucastle and Dr Roylott (violent sociopaths who went to extreme lengths to keep their [step-]daughter(s) from marrying so they could get their inheritance)...

Have you seen the Ronald Howard (not that one) adaptation? Seen here: at Wikipedia. I got a four pack at Walmart a while back, and it might be my favorite adaptation. It's nicely understated, which I feel fits in more to canon.

A lot of adaptations make it way too much about Holmes as a character, whereas Doyle often had Holmes only as narrator. This show does a good balance of it, in that Holmes and Watson are characterised enough to be enjoyable and endearing, but not so much that they overshadow the story.

I actually had heard of it, thanks to a Holmes Web Site. I've never watched it though.

!! Netflix has it! And I have Netflix! I know what I'm doing tonight!

Thanks!
