F!S Feminist quote of the day

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
A woman reading Playboy feels a little like a Jew reading a Nazi manual.
Ms G Steinem

I was originally looking for the fish/bicycle quote, but this one really stood out

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree!

Re: F!S Feminist quote of the day

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if Ms G Steinem has ever actually read a Playboy or is just going on assumptions on what's in there. Because the comparison is ridiculous.

Re: F!S Feminist quote of the day

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree with the comparison too, but she did actually work at the Playboy club as a bunny, so it's not as if it was a random, uninformed opinion.

This.

I feel like if you want to compare something to the Holocaust you better be really, really fucking sure that it is on the same scale as the Holocaust. And not a lot of things are.

Re: F!S Feminist quote of the day

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, so Dworkin and Steinem are too controversial (Although I think any good feminist worth her salt should be controversial).

What about Greer For tomorrow? Is she a good balance between Mainstream and controversial outspokenness? Will be taking requests if you think someone else needs some of the limelight.

I would like offer an apology to anyone offended by this quote. I interpreted the quote in one particular way that I did not consider to be offensive, and either I neglected to see any other way it might have went down or I was wrong and it caused offence regardless. Either way, I made a mistake in choosing this quote and I and sorry if I have caused offence.

Lesson learned. shall I assume Solanas would be a bad fit? (FunFact, I had toyed with bringing out Solanas after Dworkin, but thought I'd best step it down with a nice easy Steinem. Ha. Should have stuck with the Fish/Bicycles bit, it seems.)

But Playboy used to have the best SF stories. And some of the cartoons were hilarious.

Of course, I think I was around 10-11 when I was sneak reading my brother's magazines, so it's all seen through a pre-teen lens.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was really a MRA or Egalitarian troll trying to stir things up. Everyone knows these ladies are an embarrassment and the current feminist movement has nothing to do with them. Other than maybe a few teens from tumblr that have no idea what they're talking about.

I read playboy once, and it was so fucking boring. It was the most boring magazine I ever bought, the articles were stupid, the pictures of the girls were horrible and I just came away feeling very annoyed and bored. Over naked girls.

Will take recommendations for GOOD magazines with scantily clad ladies.

Y'know, here's an idea. Let's say I believe you are not a troll. Then, I'd believe you're inexperienced and young, but mean well, and have tried to read "the classical" feminists.

You want discussion? Provide us with a starting point for the discussion, instead of just throwing in an inflammatory quote with no context nor explanation.

Some bulletpoints:

- Your feminism MUST BE TRANSVERSAL, INCLUSIVE AND INTERSECTIONAL; or it's bullshit. This is not negotiable.

- Try with thought-provoking quotes of feminists from the whole spectrum. Try Queer feminism, POC feminism, Muslim feminism... whatever. Don't stay with the angry sex-negative anti-trans whitey authors. You'll only get irate responses, wank and/or laughs if you just parrot Second Wave Feminists or RadFems.

I agree. A dirty magazine is totally on par with a genocidal manual.

I'll slap a /s on that comment, since I'm sure there are some people who might say such a thing in all seriousness.

Re: F!S Feminist quote of the day

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
...Late, and this might sound like I'm being an ass but...As a rule? If you're just throwing quotes out there*, don't pick the ones that compare mundane things to being "Nazi manuals".

*If you're just trying to see reactions then whatever, but if you're actually trying to get a discussion about feminism going quotes are not a good starting point in and of themselves. You need more than to, if nothing else, get your point across [and preferably frame the quote in a way that gets people to be more inclined to read it the way you do.] That said, this one would have been hard to pull off regardless.
