Queer is an easy one to read characters as. It's not a visible thing, and it's a thing that people often try to keep secret, so most secret-keeper characters can be queered if you really want to queer them.

With that said, most states of being can be matched to characters if you try hard enough. Just today, I read an essay about how Octodad is like a person with a spinal condition who's trying to pretend he's healthy. The author admitted that he didn't think the game's creators intended that interpretation, but it was one that worked for him, so whatever.

I've seen this all over tumblr. People feeling they have to apologise for not shipping these sisters incestuously. WTF?

IA. I wasn't aware that this was an uncommon opinion though.

I've seen enough whining about it that I get where OP is coming from.

Every time people complain about those icky SJWs, all I have is stories about the anti-SJ people annoying me.

... You can't ship a pairing "as sisters". You can like their relationship as sisters, sure. But "shipping" means that you'd like to see them together romantically.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen people use shipping for non-romance as well. "I friend-ship them," and the like.

I think it's just a natural extension of the term. It's still an exploration of a relation*ship*, just without the romance.

Is everyone shipping them together sexually? They're sisters. Whether one is a lesbian or not, they're SISTERS.

Ha. No. I WISH everyone was shipping them together sexually. /always the incest shipper

Nope, OP's position is pretty much the most common one, other than not reading anything into their characters at all.

I was thinking about this just the other day. I watched this movie, didn't like it all that much frankly, appreciated that the act of love is sibling love instead of the usual disney crap. (On a related note, were people really surprised that Hans was evil since the start? How is that even possible? I think I watch too many movies and no writing surprises me anymore, meh).

BUT. All the talk about Elsa as bi or gay seriously put me off. Couldn't it be that it was just NOT important, for once, what her sexuality was? Isn't that more refreshing than being bi/gay off screen? I don't know, I felt relieved that FINALLY there was an aromantic co-lead female character in a disney movie, because oh hai love isn't all there is to life for a woman, and instead I find wank about whether she is hot for males or females.

Seriously, I see how it's important that she can be seen as non hetero, but I just found the other reading more influential somehow.

I don't care about shipping them but as an icon for the queer representation movement or whatever, I wish we wouldn't use siblings. We're fandom people, so stretching subtext is kind of automatic for us, but for most people they are sisters and they appear as sisters and if you told them "No, they're lesbians and they're in love.", that person is going to either think that you're a creep, or that the homophobes who equate it with incest are right.

Has it gotten to the point where not shipping incest is a secret now? I mean, I know siblingcest is HUGE in some fandoms, but I haven't really seen it in the Frozen fandom. All I ever see in terms of Elsa romance on my dash is crossover shipping her with Jack Frost.

I won't lie -- I kind of crave fanfic where Anna is straight, Elsa is gay, and Anna gets entirely too enthusiastic about matchmaking and finding a girl for Elsa, while completely overlooking the things Elsa's fretting about, like the political difficulties involved in a reigning queen having a girlfriend or not getting married... It would have the potential to be so amusing and sentimental.

I've seen a lot in fandom over the years but I was still surprised when such a large part of Disney fandom jumped aboard the incestous sister ship.

And it's not even easy to avoid because I like the movie and thought they were cute as sisters and I like that relationship so I like to see fanart, but you can't search for it without Elsa/Anna popping up and I'm just like "nooooopeeee"

This secret makes me glad I'm not in the fandom.

Can I accept the reading of Elsa as gay, hell, with my background I could entertain the incest... but I just can't do explicit femmeslash, and I kinda thought the promise of Anna/Kristoff maybe being a future thing was cute... but no, I can't really get into Elsa/Anna either.

(I will note: All the incest I have shipped (which is plenty) is either the male/male variety, or a rare male/female pairing.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-03 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, humor this lesbian.

Why do you see her as lesbian or bi?

Because honestly, the only response I have gotten, and I shit you not is, "Well, she has no male love interest."

But no, seriously, think about WHY you read her as such. When I actually get people to think about it, it's not very often been, "Well, I don't think she has to be, but it'd be neat to have this awesome woman be a lesbian on top of that AND be a rocking queen." Oftentimes it IS an unconscious, "But she shows no interest in MEN."

See: Merida.

I read Elsa as a lesbian, too, but it's 100% because of Idina Menzel. That's Maureen's voice belting it out to me, and SHE was a lesbian sooooo yeah.
