I can't say it's my favorite thing ever, but in my fandoms it always seems to be pretty well marked and tagged so it's pretty easy to ignore.

There are so many different KINDS of A/B/O that saying all of it is gross is like saying all BDSM fics are gross. It all depends on how it's set, how it's presented, what pieces of the myriad different parts that make up A/B/O (or BDSM) are included and in what way

There's plenty of BDSM fic that's obviously badly written 14 year old fap fantasies and then there are the few and far between that really explore that kind of thing and mental/emotional reactions seriously. Same with A/B/O. Or any fic in general really

I think it's a fascinating expression of the interesting relationship slash fandom has to men and masculinity. Slash fans, it's fair to say, are fascinated by men, and much of the history of slash fandom is about reinterpreting, queering, and reimagining various forms of masculinity to serve that fascination.

There's one really toxic model of masculinity that's very much subscribed to by a lot of MRAs, pickup artists, and their ilk: the notion of alpha males and beta males and so on, with all the competition and sneering and resentment that comes with that kind of ugly caste system. Like, they honest-to-god think that's how the real world works.

So A/B/O fic, as I see it, is just slash fandom hijacking that particular bus and driving it straight to Crazytown. And I mean that in the best way. :)

No trope is going to be everybody's cup of tea. I really hate high school AUs, for instance. And they've been around a lot longer than A/B/O, with no sign of going away anytime soon. One of the things you (rhetorical-you) have to learn about the internet is, people are going to like things that you don't like. That's the way it goes.

I think you can see how this opinion is not an unpopular one, OP. I do think the rape implications and all really squicky but I've seen stalker fics presented as romantic and sweet so it doesn't really bother me overall.

I don't understand it, either, and I've liked fiction in the past with werewolf/human sex. I'm hoping that this is yet another fandom fad and it'll move on once everyone gets tired of it.

It's popular because it's a trope mashup.

For me personally, I read it sometimes because the idea of heats reads like society-justified sex pollen, and I kind of like sex pollen. I also like the idea of otherwise masculine characters having similar biological whims as us ovary-possessing ladies. I just find it interesting and kind of fun? Possibly fulfills a hurt/comfort kink for other people, judging by some of the stuff I've read.

I have issues with power imbalance ships, and I REALLY have issues with the separation of characters into inherently subordinate and superior races. Combine them, and I'm seriously squicked out.

I wish there was more het A/B/O. Shitty paranormal romance novels just aren't the same since they aren't the characters I know and love!
