Re: Your favorite characters' lowest point

I was just trying to think what Ichigo's low point was and yeah, that was probably it. He really didn't seem like himself. That whole arc was about doing a huge mind-fuck on him, though.

I see! Makes sense. I'm not much of a Vetinari fan (I mean, I like him, but I've always been interested in the worldbuilding more than in the majority of the characters), so I guess it just wasn't an issue for me.

Re: Fic you're too ashamed to write but want anyway

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-04-11 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
I want super, super, super angsty, fluffy, sugary, sappy fics of my brotps. But writing that... nnnnnnopey nope :D I do write friendshippy gen, but I feel like there is a border I cannot cross without making myself cringe into a singularity.

I find a lot of enjoyment in interesting plots and worldbuilding, so that's fine, but sometimes I wish there were something incredibly pointless and touchy-feely. And I can sometimes find this stuff for the Holmes franchise, but in smaller fandoms, eh, I'm one of the only people writing anything at all. And if I don't write this type of fic, more likely than not I will never be able to read it.

yeeah Nero Wolfe FTW <3 And Mycroft, obviously. He is pretty fat, though I've never seen him as obese (which Wolfe probably is).

I'm hoping suicide. That, or dying in my sleep from a heart failure.

I really hope you get a painless, peaceful death. And I know it isn't much, but I'm very sorry you have to go through that and that you can't choose euthanasia. That's exactly the reason it always upsets and distresses me to know that some places don't have these laws.

Re: Post a light-hearted quote that epitomizes a character in your fandom

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-04-11 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
"He was indeed quite horizontal, lying between two shelves that were so close together only the smallest volumes could have possibly fitted them, and yet Bell had somehow clambered in and managed to lie flat. He had a watch in one hand.

'Doctor?' I said in amazement."

Excuse me while I laugh forever. This quotation is full of pure wtf.

I don't have Youtube videos handy but here is my list of Arab metal that I compiled for my Afghanistan-set urban fantasy:

Khalas
Odious
Kattah
Arkan
Amaseffer
Almana Shchora
Sand Aura

Hope that helps!

Not a move soundtrack persay, but I really love Murray Gold's music, especially his scores on Doctor Who (even if you don't watch the show, a lot of the music is great).

Objective quality exists, it just depends on the writing technique, devices, tropes, and language, not on the reader's feelings regarding the book. "Objectively shit" doesn't meant that it isn't enjoyable or shouldn't be enjoyable, it means that the writing is bad.

I know what you are talking about, but at the same time I can say that I often find myself tired of people talking about how no objective quality exists. I just want to say, sorry, it's not true, go read some actual literary criticism research.

Re: How do you react to stress?

I start wishing I could kill myself. Like, daydreaming about it and stuff. It's pretty bad.

About 150,000 words written in about 60 days is only 2,500 a day. That's pretty average, actually. It is really easy if you've got passed editing as you write. But I'm just hearing those numbers is making me agree with the sporker of her work.

A good 50K+ story takes even professional writers months to write. Not the initial rough draft, but the finished novel. The sporker was probably right about everything they said. Unless you're Jack Kerouac, your first draft sucks.

I'm not saying that in fandom we have to write like professionals, but if someone sporks you they are probably right about your rough draft needing a lot of work. Some sporkers are really mean, but most of them make very valid points.

Learn from it.

This makes sense to me. I hate almost all fanservice because it's not what I want, what the character wants, or what makes sense, instead it's what some male director somewhere wants. Not interested in knowing your fetishes dude.

Re: Your favorite characters' lowest point

[personal profile] badass_tiger 2014-04-11 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, fair enough. For me, it's the characters that sell the world-building and quite frankly, Vetinari is the love of my fictional life and I'm a bit protective of him. The last few books have been downright mean to him ;; But from a world-building point of view, I admit the last books have been pretty good in that respect.

I agree. The eyes, the hair and the outfit. And those scenes where he goes from cold killer to puppy were impossibly good. But his fucking eyes in that fucking kitchen though...

Ahhh, recs!! Probably you have already linked all the good stuff, I'll check if I have more to share. I have done the same lately... reading all nights before and after the movie, to the point that I'm not sporting permanent dark ring under my eyes.

I can't comment on the story line but the writing is pretty shit? Last week I saw an add for it and figured, well, cool more dystopia riding off THG flagtails for me to read so I want to the book store (nice handy, up front display near checkout), opened it to a random page to read and - just - it's really poorly written, I'm not buying that.

Left bookstore with no new book :(

I think I missed last weeks discussion tho, can't find it? Cause it seems ppl here are enjoying it so maybe I opened to a bad random page.
