Wow, I'm the OTP type and I dislike it when an unexpected ship invades my OTP fic but that is waaaaaaaaaay over the top. Whoa. She needs to take a step back, then follow that up with a walk around the block to cool her head.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH, most BNFs are batshit underneath. People that dedicated almost have to be.

Maybe this person is going for hyperbole? Trying to be funny but instead it comes off as weird and obsessive?

I admit that there are some NOTPs that really give me the squick (incest ships being the big one), and I generally stay out of that end of the fandom pool because I get the whole MKINYK deal. But more than once I've hit the big last-minute switcher-oo and my NOTP with squick elements suddenly comes into play.

And yeah, it pissed me off. Granted, not enough to have me ranting, raving, and reaching for a cup of tea "to calm down."

"omg I read this thing I hate and that's HORRIBLE I need to go throw up"

LOL really OTT

Then again it's been my experience that people in fandom or on the internet (or both) can act REALLY PATHETICALLY over the top because they read something once that they didn't like.

Maybe it's meant as comedic hyperbole? Like, when I complain that my favorite bar has closed for repairs and I just can't find the will to live, I don't really mean that. I just mean I'm annoyed (and probably healthier for drinking fewer margaritas).

But hey, she may actually be batshit over her pairings. Stranger things have happened.

Yeah, this is so tumblr. And I say that as someone who likes tumblr. I don't know what it is about the atmosphere of that place and how fandom operates, but... this sort of over the top drama plays well. Maybe it helps if one's audience is younger and also prone to Super Dramatic Feels About Things, but exaggeration and the implicit demand for emotional support is not weird, somehow.

Either that, or there's some mental health issue going on. I had a friend like that: super funny and fun to be around, except that she was bipolar and when she crashed, she crashed HARD. You couldn't say a damn thing that wouldn't offend her, everything made her psychotically angry, and because she was smart and observant she would say some truly ugly shit if she thought you were "judging" her in any way. And by judging, I mean declining to hang around for more abuse.

Note: I'm not saying all bipolar people are like this, I know they're not. My friend wasn't managing her condition well.

I am also like this. there are ships I hate (for their gross mischaracterisation of characters and fucking up the canon, mostly, plus they can get annoying because of the fans), and while I'm usually okay with avoiding them, sometimes they just get to me. if I read a cool fic and it 'betrays' me this way, I feel really shitty, especially, you know, if it's a hard day's night and I wanted a piece of comfort. and idgaf if someone thinks it's 'pathetic'. judge away.

For some (not all, obviously) BNFs and shut-ins on tumblr (and lj, back in the day), fandom is the only thing they really have. They don't really have anything going on irl, whether it's because of unfortunate circumstances or because they're just too lazy/emotionally fragile to try, so instead they obsess over fandom and invest way too much of themselves in it which leads to emotional breakdowns over things the rest of us would find inconsequential. It doesn't make their melodrama less ridiculous, but I do genuinely feel sorry for people like that

If it were a friend, though, and they were letting something like that greatly affect their life, I'd be tempted to slap them around a bit.

Straw that breaks the camel's back?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-09-21 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe she had a bad week or something, and hoped that a nice fluffy fic would cheer her up, but then when it turns out to break up her favorite couple, it becomes the icing on the cake that she throws on the wall?

IDK, I've burst into tears once when the pizza was five minutes late, because I was already so upset that my car had to be taken in for repairs. The pizza delivery boy probably thought I was nuts. It sounds like you only know this person from the internet, so you might not have the whole story.

I find that stuff really annoying. And I don't know what's worse, if they're making it up/exaggerating, or if that's how they legitimately feel.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking unfollow her. You don't need that kind of drama bullshit on your dash. It's always ridiculous to me when people lose their shit over fanfic of all things. Yeah, there's stuff I don't like to read out there, but either I back out of it or just move on.

It does crack me up when a fic doesn't go the way people expect it to. There was a chaptered fic in my fandom that was somewhat popular, but something happened in it that people didn't like or expect based on how the story was going. The author got a lot of backlash from it and eventually deleted the fic. It was some good wank to watch.

Going to point out a thing that people didn't think of: incest ships, ships that involve rape in canon, etc.

Things that can legit trigger people can lead to this reaction.

That sounds over the top to me, but…

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe she was being hyperbolic about the story and then the pathetic comment really hurt.

Maybe she does it because fans/friends support and encourage the behavior.

Maybe (somehow) she has got the idea in her head that that’s just how she should behave.

Maybe she’s just incredibly overdramatic.

Maybe she has behavioral issues.

Maybe it’s cathartic for her.

Maybe she has fun stirring other people up.

Whatever the reason, if it really bothers you (and I don't blame you for that), maybe you should unfollow.

I don't know the person in question or there motives, but I do know that I sometimes have a visceral reaction to the OTP/NOTP switch, and I sometimes use my blog to vent, if not to that degree, so it's hard for me to really judge.

It could be attention seeking behavior, but it could also be a legit neurological thing. Or it could be both. I'm not qualified to say. If you enjoy the good stuff, my best advice is to just skip past the next bout of histrionics as best you can and try to ignore the behavior. You don't need to be the one providing pats and cuddles when things go wrong, but if this is someone with actual problems, you also don't have to be the one providing a slap in the face-- for some people, being told to get it together is only going to lead to more tears, and it doesn't matter how well-meaning you are, or how much the other person needs to fix something in their life.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
While she definitely seems to have some very serious issues (and I'm guessing quite of them are real-life related), and she definitely needs to learn to handle frustration better, I don't think you should get involved. I don't think she'll change and may throw a tantum instead.

Maybe you should reconsider if it's worthy following her; following a very dramatic person can be draining on the long run. I think you should value your mental health here.

Depends on the NOTP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody's mentioned this yet, but some pairings in fandom have innately upsetting dynamics for some people. Incest pairings, abusive pairings, unbalanced pairings, and huge age difference pairings all contain potential triggers depending on the reader, so possibly this was a bam! triggered situation.

The BNF may have just been being over-dramatic, but I don't think we have enough information to assume that from this secret alone.
