I'm afraid it's the start of a dark chapter in European history, where we struggle with protecting our way of life without resorting to sending all Muslims to camps, ala the camps for the Japanese in America.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This is so immature of me, but I can't help but be amused that when you're talking about a "dark chapter in European history" and sending people to camps, you bring up the camps for the Japanese in AMERICA as an example.

When there's much more familiar and close to home examples of people being sent to camps for their religion in recent European history.

Sorry -- I know I'm completely missing the point.

I'm not sure whether the analogy is a good one, just because the Japanese internment camps were so weird, in terms of being such a specific, momentary, short-term thing, and also in terms of the fact that the government and military straight-up actually lied in order to get it done. I suspect the narrative surrounding Islam in Europe is likely to look significantly different.

None of that of course is to say that the internment of Japanese-Americans was anything other than shameful and horrible.

Short of a major government upheaval I don't see that happening. Right now we're at a point where Muslims could assassinate Obama and suicide bomb the Eiffel Tower and people would be more concerned about "islamophobia" or hurting their feelings with pictures of Mohammed.

So far, the consequence seems to be increased islamphobia, more support for far right and racist parties, and a wave of domestic terrorist attempts against muslim and (for some reason) jewish people.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, and a lot of European countries were already going that direction. :( And it's just going to create a vicious cycle where the minority/Muslim population are going to feel alienated and ostracized. leading some to find appeal in things like extremist activities.

I doubt if there are going to be any good tribute songs. I mean fergison hasn't given us any good tributes that got far. Most of the controversial music is about butts now.

There are already homage songs and tribute drawings being spread. Uderzo, the artist for Asterix did a Je Suis Charlie drawing featuring Asterix which I've seen floating around.

Well, for one, my city now has an army presence, apperently...

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2015-01-18 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, currently the aftermath is that our nut of a mayor has mobilized the goddamn ARMY in my hometown (I'm currently at my bf, but man that shit is insane). I have friends who had tanks in front of their houses.

Currently we actually fear some sort of European equivalent of the patriot act.

Yeah, I'm sure there will be cultural aftermath. There already are homage pictures. I'm honestl more worried about the political aftermath thought.

Whoa, what the fuck! Where do you live?

That's crazy. I mean, I knew France was becoming more militarized after the fact... but yeah, that's scary.

Re: Well, for one, my city now has an army presence, apperently...

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's kind of scary. :( Is it in response to a suspected threat, or are they just establishing a presence?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's going to be something the grandchildren cringe over and try to pretend never happened, just like Americans try to pretend the internment camps we stuck citizens of Japanese descent (but not German or Italian!) in never happened.

I can't see how anyone can't be fucking ashamed over this BS time.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
And no one will do anything for Je Suis Juif. But that's to be expected from an anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist, anti-Israeli world.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe because Je Suis Charlie has become an all-encompassing sign or being against terrorist and pro-freedom of speech, while Je Suis Juif has the implications of supporting an ethnic and religious group and their ideologies?

Don't hold your breath

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2015-01-18 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
One of those extremely pervasive yet unspoken rules of fandom is to not write or do anything in relation to real life tragedies.

Writing about rape, torture, noncon, abuse, and all sorts of other terrible things that tons of people around the world experience is okay. But writing something like a shooting or terrorist attack that only a few people in the world actually experience? No, no, bad fandom. Even if you are being respectful and/or doing it for the sake of comforting someone who could use a little reassurance in the aftermath of something horrible, if it's not something terrible a lot of people experience, then it's exploitation/appropriation and you are a terrible person for even thinking about it.

/still bitter

Re: Don't hold your breath

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think they meant just the reaction from fandom (since they say "cultural reaction"). When things like this happen, there's generally a lot of political cartoons, murals, etc drawn to comment or pay tribute to it. Things like 9/11 also had numerous songs written ("Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning" comes to mind)

I don't know what's worse; that someone was killed over a drawing or that they are killed over a drawing of a guy who fucked a nine year old girl and owned slaves and yet is still held up as a flawless person by the religion he started.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
There already are hommage songs and drawings, OP. It's just that they're kind of in French, since you know, it happened there.
