1. I love Gaspard but whenever people who haven't actually seen him act/know little about him think he's ~omg so hawt~ I'm always a little bit confused. He's a great actor, but... I don't know, I just don't think he's all that classically handsome. I don't know how to describe it -- I'm personally attracted to him, but I don't think he's traditionally good-looking. It doesn't strike me as strange AT ALL that other people don't think he's good looking, because in a way, I don't either.

IDK.

But he's sure as hell not Edward Cullen. Robert Pattinson? Way more Edward than Gaspard could ever be. Not to mention, Gaspard being FRENCH and way older than 17 makes it totally inconceivable that he'd ever be cast for the part (not that he'd ever want to, considering he has a lot of credibility for the movies he's previously done and it would be a sad day when he decided to do a twinky vampire teen romance film)

Woo. Page 10? Like anyone will see this lulz. Anyway. . .

HERE'S MY SECRET: I'm a fanartist who posted THEIR OWN fanart on 4chan and I didn't give credit to myself! :x How lame am I?!

But yeah, I appreciate it if credit is given. I appreciate it more if they ask me. Just like those who make icons want credit for the icons they make.

However, when it comes to fanart and fanfiction, the artist and writer does not hold the copyright to their material because it is a derivative of something else. That's why I get more touchy if someone uses artwork of mine that is original or of my own original characters.

I really just don't want people taking my artwork and saying they drew it, that it is theirs, or make money off of it.

My friends were so kind to point me to an RPer who uses my artwork for one of their PBs. I planned on asking if they could credit me but, I got more nervous over the idea that if I did, they would just find a different PB to use. :x

3: Hee! Just saw Sweeney Todd today, and that line was kinda funny, huh? I just went, "Colonel Brandon?!" XD

8: No shame in that. I feel much the same about Hayashibara Megumi, hoping that if people love her enough in roles like female!Ranma, Lina Inverse, Faye Valentine, and Ayanami Rei, they'll give her a chance as Haibara Ai. *wibbles*

21: Hmmn, maybe Burton will include it as a deleted scene on the DVD?

33: *nods* Michiru's not the reason I started playing, but for a long time, whenever I picked up a bow I pretended to be her. ^^*

5. Mmm... DJ Qualls nose. Sorry, what where we talking about again?

13. YES. Just... Just yes.

24. Are you serious? I'm not in the Jak fandom, but I love the games and I'd really thought there would be a lot of material for Ashelin/Torn... This shocks me.

32. XD That's so awesome. (Also, TWO EL DORADO SECRETS. Today is a good day.)

33. Guilty as well... Though Quatre from Gundam W may have had a bit of influence in my decision as well.

Unfortunately, it's true. I'm not really sure why there isn't more TornxAshelin fic out there; maybe it's because a lot of people dislike Ashelin, or maybe because it isn't nearly as IN YOUR FACE as JakxKeira. Either way it's starting to piss me off. The one canon pairing I like, I can't find. Figures.

COME ON FANDOM. HE SACRIFICED PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING FOR HER. HOW ISN'T THAT ROMANTIC? GODDAMNIT.

18. No, it doesn't make you a bitch. Stupidity is meant to be laughed at ;)

You're right. And you've gotten the exact kind of comments as you predicted. Sad, isn't it?

The only thing that really bothers me about fanart theft is the attitudes of the people who do it. The whole, "LOL, WHO CARES ABOUT THE ARTIST?!" bit and the horrid amount of self-entitlement I keep seeing. Not to mention the sentiment that just because someone doesn't speak English, their opinion is somehow less valid.

Funnily enough, I've met some of the artists of my favorite doujins. They haven't gotten rich off of their work, they just do it because it's something they enjoy doing. Unless you're at a doujinshi event buying directly from the artist herself, chances are she isn't making money off of it.

I admit that I scan doujinshi and I allow others to make icons from it. But I wouldn't go posting my stuff on 4chan. And I always ask that others don't. As to whether or not my friends respect my request, I don't know. I trust my friends to respect it, however.

The people mocking you by saying how it's just icons forget that people also use it in banners, layouts, etc. etc.

Oh well, fanart theft really only bothers me when an artist closes down her site because of it. It doesn't happen too often, thankfully, but when it does... everyone loses D: I doubt most people think about this.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
6. Oh boy. You'd hate me, wouldn't you? But believe it or not, commenting on everyone's entries doesn't make a person nicer. Sometimes it's annoying. I've known people who have commented stupid shit for the sake of commenting, and I get irritated at it.

14. FF12 is tied for my favourite FF game. But no one really respects my list of favourites for reasons that have nothing to do with 12 being one of the two in the top spot. xD

25. Signed. I feel like people think I'm irrational for it, and it makes me sad. I think the thing that bothers me the most, though, is when people who aren't artists say "well if I were an artist I'd be happy to see people use my art for icons!" (The people who are artists and say that, well that I can understand) It just seems like they're trying to have no experience with something, and then force their opinions onto people who do have experience with it. It's mean, but who cares what someone would do in a hypothetical situation when people who are in that situation often say the opposite?

Though I find hilariousness in the fact that most people who use fanart for icons want credit for their icons. Because cropping and raising the saturation demands recognition amirite?

I KNOW YOU. Sorry, our fandom is small enough for me to usually pick up on this sort of thing, and the Tess/Jinx sorta gave it away. XD

And...I agree wholeheartedly, 'cept for the love for AsheTorn, I guess, even though I think their relationship is a really fun one to read and write about, so long as they aren't being JakX!OOC. (Seriously, since when does Torn used words like "sweetheart"? WTF, NDI.)

And the Jinxie bit. I could see it, but I don't think I could bring myself to ship him with...anyone, really. Plus, seeing as I write him and Tess as cousins, and Jinx as being gay--he's probably actually bi, but I don't tend to write him often anyway--it'd probably break my head a little. (Even though I write Acheroncest and ErGol IN THE SAME FREAKING UNIVERSE. WTF, Nashi.) I'd read it, though. In a heartbeat. SO YOU SHOULD TOTALLY WRITE IT.

And NDI's ottselfication of Tess was SO SCREWED UP. Way to destroy a girl's life, man, seriously. They only spent THREE WHOLE GAMES going on about how much it SUCKED for Dax to be an ottsel, and then POOF. Tess is one too. But it's okay, because it'll make Dax happy.

No. Just...no.

(For the record, I like to fix NDI's 'fix' in most of my fanfiction, even if I've never technically written that far in anything yet. I've got plans, though, rest assured.)

As for the LACK of AsheTorn fic out there, don't blame Ashe--blame Torn. The man is unloved to a severe degree, and I CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHY. I think he's hot as hell and at least eight times more interesting. Kinda hard to write, though...that could be the problem.

Re: 24

[identity profile] jallycyn.livejournal.com 2008-01-08 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Damn, not again. XD My secrets aren't very secretive, are they? OH WELL.

Anyways. I got ahold of some of the Jak X cutscenes and couldn't get more than one or two scenes into the game before headdesking over the trainwreck that is Naughty Dog's characterization in that game. Sorry, Nashi. Razer looked rly kewl though. ^_^

I can't decide whether Jinx is just screwing with Jak's head when he makes those "pretty boy" remarks, or he's actually gay. I'll just assume he's being an ass so I can make TessxJinx work. :) Damn, I'm really itching to write that crackfic I had planned now...

It would've been so easy for them to make Tess's transformation just a little less fucked up. She could've hinted something about actually *wanting* to become an Ottsel at ANY point during Jak II or Jak 3, and I would've been more or less okay with her getting fuzzy. But no, all she asked for was a pair of pants. How does this translate to, "I WANT TO GIVE UP MY ENTIRE LIFE AS A HUMAN BEING IN ORDER TO SATISFY DAXTER'S DIRTY SEXUAL DESIRES"? One of the few things I actually *liked* about DaxterxTess was that it didn't seem to be a big deal that they were different species and that it didn't get in the way of their relationship. Naughty Dog effectively RUINED that. (They actually refer to the fact that Tess and Dax are different species as a "problem", even though they never made it out to be one in the games.) Way to go, guys!

By the way, I will DIE to see a fic where Tess becomes human again. (I was almost planning to write one myself at one point, something along the lines of "Tess dumps Dax's ass and goes on an EPIC journey to recover her humanity") Usually I hate fix-it fics, but seeing as what ND did was no better, I would defnitely make an exception. XD

Torn is hard to write. I spent a long amount of time trying to get inside his head and I'm still not sure I could write him properly. Funny thing though, once I read one of those horrid sucked-into-the-game type fics where the author MANGLED Jak's characterization, but absolutely NAILED Torn's. wwtttfffffffff.

...Sorry, this ran kinda long. v_v

This is one of those rare moments where my child's mind completely overtakes my adult one and screams "FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS SACRED, NO! NOOOOEH".

But I have to admit, not once in my life had I ever thought someone would slash them/they would be slashable.

Uh, OT but hey, there's a Tintin movie coming out this year or the next I believe--three stories (one directed by Peter Jackson, another by Spielberg). Should be exciting. though, I still think the two 1960s live-action movies were epic :D;;

(What's depressing is that I no longer have my Tintin icons on this computer)

Well, you know how entitlement whores on 4chan are always bawling SAUCE PLZ? Get this, crediting actually gives you the sources. How about that.

And iconists are always asking people to credit and comment on their icons, right? Don't come bleating to me that you don't, you know most of y'all do. So how can it be so hard to link to a resource post on your icon journal from your profile? And you don't even have to credit everything right away, I know it can be difficult to resist the pull of some HOMG AMAJING anonymous piece of art that you simply have to icon right away. Instead, just add a note that says you're willing to credit the original artists but can't find them at the moment, if anyone would please give the sources it would be highly appreciated, etc. And people who see this will provide you with the information needed to update your resources. I mean, it's a link, a click and snap and you're done.

And if the artists specifically ask people not to redistribute their works in any way, you should probably respect their wishes. Plenty of fish in the sea, just look at all the generous F!S fanartists who don't give a shit. If you ahead and use their art anyway, you're an asshole, and you should own up to that too.

25. WOW I AM SO LATE. DX

I... use fanart sometimes (or mistake fanart for official images) and I'm sorry because I'll feel like a complete hypocrite for typing this out (I use fanart icons, too). It's sad to see you got the comments you expected. I don't care that people say "Oh, it's the Internet". I mean, aren't there people on the other side of the monitors?

Sure, fan art isn't ~*original property*~ but to make some art look real or absolutely beautiful is a talent that should be respected, like writing or singing. If the fan artists asks that you cite sources for their work, don't be a jerk and just do it? Fan artists practice and work hard, from what I've seen. I have a friend who draws the most amazing pictures ever and since he does art classes, he slaves away for a month sometimes on one picture.

I used to write a lot, till my stuff started getting stolen (online and offline) and I was really bugged by that so I stopped. A friend told me I should be "flattered" but... I found it hard? Because it felt like I had worked hard for nothing when I saw the people who took my ideas getting bravos for such "splendid creativity". :/

OKAY WHATEVER. TL;DR I do agree with you. I've seen some icon comms say they'll credit the fan artist if they get a source and when somebody tells them, they don't credit and continue making icons from there. D:

31. I don't care about art. I loved AIR's story. Kanon's was... it was hard for me to get in to.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad all the bawwww cry moar entitlement people are done, now. It's like they think they own the internet, and everything that gets posted on the internet is THEIRS FOR THE TAKING who cares if it's against the fanartist's wishes? THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE PUT IT ON MY INTERNETZ.

I can objectively see both points, here. Sure, an icon is just 100x100 pixels, and most Japanese fanartists (which is mainly what we're talking about here) don't go looking all over LJ for their art, so what's the harm. They're not losing money or sleep over it, so neither should you, right?

On the other hand, parading around with a picture, icon or whatever is just an amoral thing to do. If you don't know the source, you don't know if the author requested you leave it alone, and if you do know and don't credit, you're an asshole. Sure, you get to walk around with a pretty icon, but if you can't summon the respect for the artist who made the picture enough to even credit or find the source, you don't deserve the image, fanart or not.

Besides, if you paint it off mockingly as 'oh, it's just fanart', then use official art, dumbasses.

14. FFXII was subtle and beautiful. The characters were involved and real. Like people. The story was something complex and realistic (withing the fantasy-esque genre) too. It made you think. It wasn't just another "teenage angst saves the day" story like a lot of other FF stuff.

But most people want broad brush strokes for characters. They can't be assed enough to pay attention to things like subtle details and some of the looks the characters gave each other. Yes, that's right. They showed character development through expressions. Not just through a character explaining their emotion.

BASICALLY, you're not the only person on the internet who feels similarly.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Barring the fact that the technology to allow characters to show that amount of subtle emotion in their faces is still relatively new, and for years and years we RPG fans were relying almost solely on text and ellipses to understand what was going through a character's head, I don't really like the implication that people who didn't appreciate the development in FFXII aren't intelligent enough to understand "omg REAL character development."

I think there were a few characters in the game who were incredibly well done (Fran, Balthier and Larsa, without debate. And okay, I love Dr. Cid), but for the most part FFXII was a dire case of telling and not showing. For a good chunk of the game, everyone and their uncle was cautioning Ashe about how she was being corrupted by her quest for power, and all I could say about it was: "O RLY." She never shows any indication one way or the other besides looking pensively to the side once and a while and being told by others that she should be afraid of it. That's the kind of crap that gets on my nerves with FFXII- I can't think of many lines that characters had that weren't direct exposition, and while it may be more realistic that a party of traveling heroes would spend most of their time talking about the task at hand, when I compare it to things like Lunar, Tales of the Abyss, Grandia or Final Fantasy IX which go OVERBOARD letting you get to know the characters through the inanity of everyday life, it's hard for me to go back to FFXII without it looking a little lifeless.

Honestly, I just expected better from the people who made Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story. FFT in particular has some of the most amazing, subtle and profound character development of any RPG I've ever played, and it managed to do it through a crappy translation and with characters that have no noses.

I'm not saying that you're wrong for seeing the amazing development in FFXII- actually, I'm a little envious because I keep desperately looking for reasons to like the game more than I do. I'm just saying that just because it appears to be more subtle doesn't automatically make it "better" and "more mature"; older RPGs may be cartoonish, overblown and melodramatic, but to a lot of people the characters are just as real and layered. Honestly: if you have to spend 50+ hours with a bunch of people, I think more is ALWAYS better than less.
