Several of the BNFs of the Tsubasa fandom fall into the rabid yaoi fangirl/I-love-wanking-for-no-reason category, from what I've seen. Don't know about the Naruto fandom, but I can totally see where the poster is coming from.

While I'm not saying that icon-maker's rules can be worded better (that did come off as quiet callous), I never really understood the hypocrisy of the whole thing; what's the difference between iconmakers using official art and fanart? In a way, both times artwork is being used to create new forms of "artwork" (because yes, some people consider icons a form of graphic art; I'm not saying I'm one of them, but I digress), not to mention the fanartists are using the original artwork to create their own, which kind of mirrors the dilemma between the icon maker and fanartist I believe. The thing is, I understand fanartists might be upset of the ways their work is being used, but the fact of the matter is, it seems hypocritical just to "respect" the fanartists and not using their artwork without permission while turning a blind eye to the original artist, if that makes any sense. Sure, it's common courtesy in the end, but again, icons and fanart aren't taken that serious to most.

39. This is why I usually use icons made from stock photos. It's a little harder to find people that look similar, but at least I don't have a Vogue cover for an average joe.

The argument I've seen used (which I tend to agree with) is that everyone knows what studio/artist/animator/etc created the original artwork, if they're in the fandom to start with. Random fanart is generally a mystery.

Also, and this is more my personal opinion, official art is generally created with the understanding that it's going to be used to sell a product in some way--whether that product is some pencilboard or poster or the anime/manga itself. Therefore, it's likely to be less personal than fanart, which can be created for a variety of reasons, from selling as doujinshi/prints to having fun with friends.

Sorry if that second paragraph doesn't come off too well--am sick and therefore dull of brain at the moment.

I'm sort of interested by the sense of entitlement to this one.

I have a huge flist. People friend me, I presume, for my fic. I don't see that it is a requirement that I then read every post and have a comment. I know someone else on my flist who has twice the number of friends I do, and she seems to comment on every post, but her comments are all formulaic, and I'd actually rather she only commented when she had something substantive to say. When I get emails alerting me to her comment, I tend to almost verbatim recite what I'm going to find when I click.

25. No, I really, really agree with you. I absolutely hate seeing posts like 'lol sharing fanart found randomly', and most of the time it's from 4chan. People think 'one little fanart' won't matter, but to the artist it may matter a great deal. And one quickly adds to more.

46. Please don't tell me you think Tsubasa is a masterpiece of a story. Please. I mean, I'll grant you that the Kurogane/Fay fans tend to be a little... odd, but not everyone is like that! And when it's chapter after chapter of ANGSTOMG or 'yaaay collecting feathers', focusing on the characters instead of on the worlds themselves is far, far more appealing.
