I expect for the same reason people ship badly written, boring slash pairings. A)They find the two characters hot together B) They are getting more out of the "badly written" and "boring" plot than you.

I ship badly written, boring slash pairings and second this comment. It really doesn't take any effort to rewrite mortal enemies' relationship as romance.

I'm also very resentful of the concept that heterosexual romances between two people who do not outright hate each other are "boring".

This might be a question you'd get answered if you actually asked these shippers what they like about their ships without being condescending about it. A lot of people are more than happy to explain what draws them to a ship if you just ask them nicely (if you're actually interested in hearing about it and aren't looking to stir up shit).

Honestly it's not that they're "boring" that bothers me, it's that they're just OBJECTIVELY badly written.

Like Mako and Korra -- Mako was basically CHEATING on Asami when he and Korra got together. That's really what drove the final fucking nail in the coffin of Korra/Mako for me. He was just such a DOUCHE. I mean, unless you don't have a problem with how he treated Asami but I think the brilliance of the Korra writers was in breaking Korra and Mako up and putting her with Asami. Because they just fumbled Makorra so fucking HARD.

As for Spock/Uhura -- it just makes no fucking sense as written. Why the fuck are they together?

Spock is a fucking douche to Uhura.

And it makes no sense that he would even be with her in the first place given his character. The only way they make ANY sense (as written) is to assume he's wildly OOC. Spock has an established CHARACTER based on TOS. And if you want to deviate from that, you kind of have to explain or provide for some BASIS why. Otherwise you're shitting all over the character.

And the writers NEVER established how AU Spock differed from TOS Spock either genetically or in upbringing (everything we see about Spock's childhood DIRECTLY happened in TOS as well). And that's what makes us who we are -- our genetics and experiences.

So when TOS Spock grows up to say that he felt ashamed of the friendship he felt for Kirk and couldn't even tell his own MOTHER that he loved her or be with Leila Kalomi due to his repression, THAT IS A HUGE FUCKING PART OF HIS CHARACTER.

And you CANNOT excuse him getting with Uhura as Vulcans having difference between friendships and romantic love because romantic love is somehow "more natural" to Vulcan culture. It doesn't work that way, ESPECIALLY because Spock said that he couldn't tell his MOM that he loved her. What is more natural than a mother-child bond? You cannot convince me that a man who couldn't tell his mother that he loved her would be comfortable dating a student. That is shitting all over Spock's character. You do have to show WHY he got over that.

And it was such an easy fix too -- if you had had something traumatic happen to Spock (like, say, the loss of Vulcan and/or his mom *cough*) -- then that could be a BASIS to build upon for why he got over his hangups and finally confessed his love. But the writers are shit and can't characterize Spock.

So, I mean, I can see why people would ship them -- they are pretty together -- but I don't think you can be a fan of Spock's character and a fan of Spuhura (as written) because it's just such a huge butchering of who he is. It's incompatible as written.

Spock/Uhura was shipped even by Leonard Nimoy himself (for those who don't know he's the guy who played original Spock and died recently, rip)
I'm not kidding:

TrekMovie: Once you mentioned that he (Zachary Quinto) did something that blew you away. I am curious now that I have seen the film, what was it that you went ‘oh that is really interesting’?
Leonard Nimoy: His relationship with Uhura, he played something that I was quite touched by. So did she for that matter. They both were terribly available for each other.

I guess he must be stupid and tasteless too for you, OP?

A lot of people like these couples because they see something you don't see. It doesn't mean they are stupid and have no taste while you are the one who holds the 'truth' and is the most objective person entlitled to tell others what they should or not should like.
Get over it and keep liking what you do instead of complaining about people liking what you don't.

Boring: very subjective, you can't dictate what must be boring or interesting (or attractive) for everyone.
Badly written: for you and that's fine, but maybe others have the opposite opinion and you can't establish that yours is a fact.
Uninspired and spoon-fed: 'idiot' would be a well deserved response to such condescending nonsense. I don't think anyone forced people to like the ships they like, if they do they must find something in them that they like. Simple.
Why they ship them? (but why you care?) simple answer's: if your opinion was a fact, and every fan saw it the same way you do, obviously people wouldn't ship them or they wouldn't say they are interesting and well written. There is always the possibility, you know, that you're the one who got it wrong.
