Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)The friend I went with gushed that it was better for the first but I felt like I was missing something. It was mostly terrible, imo. And I liked the first one, and usually love Joss Whedon's stuff.
-It felt like they tried to cram too much into one movie, without resolving anything. Thor going off to do magical Norse God stuff was really quickly done, and underplayed.
-The "serious talks" really missed it dialogue-wise for me. It all seemed ridiculously cheesy and fake.
-Natasha getting kidnapped for no reason, for all of about two seconds. Why exactly did Ultron capture her? and then do nothing at all about her but give a cliche evil speech?
-Speaking of cliches, the dialogue. Did I mention the dialogue? Cheesy. And I just could not with the fail!epic one liners, like when Vision (?) says "Well I am just a day old" before killing Ultron. Cringe-worthy.
-Too much Tony Stark, just like the first one. Putting ten seconds of serious flashback doesn't mean you've suddenly developed the other characters.
-Natasha especially felt like she did nothing at the end. I was hoping she'd be the one to lift Thor's hammer and have a badass final moment, that would've made up for her becoming the angsty lover cliche. But she didn't do anything badass. Just angsted some more.
-Did Captain America do anything in this movie? I hardly remember him in it.
-End credits scene was... well I shouldn't say it was bad, it was just predictable. They are tying this into Guardians of the Galaxy? I am shocked! Shocked I say! I think something more subtle would've been better than just that ugly blue guy.
Things I liked:
-Hawkeye's development was probably the most interesting thing about the movie, especially considering I keep forgetting he was in the first one. Him having a "normal" life and family was surprisingly touching. Likewise I liked Natasha's BFF relationship with him and auntie status to the kids.
-The Natasha/Hulk romance was kind of sweet. I wasn't quite decided but I think I do like it, I just didn't like most of their serious scenes together. It got a bit dangerously near King Kong loves Blondie for me, but overall, I think I like them exploring the relationship, and I think I like more that nothing came of it (yet, anyway)
-The party scene where they try to lift Thor's hammer. But then again, that was in the preview
-Ultron's voice. Him sounding so human was kind of a cool way to make a robot enemy interesting. He had some dumb lines but overall, very good.
-The twins. Superior Quicksilver in this movie. Him dying was lame though. Just because Whedon was desperate to Whedon someone off... and he was actually the most predictable character to kill, which made it even more lame. But I liked the twins.

It has some nice banter and a few memorable lines, but the action was pretty rote, the Nat/Hulk think was pretty forced and random, there was zero tension until the very end, and the one death you'll see from ten miles off if you've every watched anything else Joss Whedon has written or directed in your entire life.
Spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron
I do share Herpy's complaint about the movie feeling disjointed and jumping around too much. I think it got better after Ultron appeared, but the beginning felt like such a mess. And why are they suddenly fighting together, anyway? Was that explained? After the solo movies I would have appreciated a get-back-together scene. Or some kind of explanation why they're all back together now.
As a Clint/Coulson (or Clint/anyone shipper) I found his surprise!family oddly charming. It came out of nowhere, but was pretty sweet and I think it made Clint's interactions with Wanda and Pietro even better. Especially the Aunt Natasha bit and talking with Natasha about DIY projects during the fight. This one actually worked for me. Though I don't get why people think that Clint left the Avengers permanently to stay with his family? I figured he just needs some time with them after the battle, plus they just had another kid. But I've seen people say online that he's now left the Avengers? Did I miss something?
Bruce/Natasha I like in theory, in the movie I only liked the scenes with her and the Hulk and when she pushed Bruce into hulking out. The other scenes felt somewhat forced, but that could have been the German dub. I could see it working, but it didn't in the movie, at least not for me.
Someone said Ultron wasn't scary as a villain, and I agree. I was distracted by his moving mouth during every close-up. I get that he wants to be more human, but damn. At least make the movement look more mechanical? They should have left his design as he was during his first appearance. THAT was freaky.
Also, the running joke with the hammer was great. I found the initial scene sort of unnecessary (but figured that maybe Natasha would wield it later as she was the only one who hadn't tried?), but it really paid off when Vision hands it back to Thor. And Tony and Steve nagging Thor about it at the end. Everyone in our group loved that joke.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)It was like if you took every Joss Whedon show, dumped them in a blender and then stapled Marvel character names to the result. Even Ultron was more like a mid-season Buffy villain than anything else.
That is really all I can say about it.
Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
I always prefer to judge movies for myself, though I was kinda wary because of the mixed reviews I saw.
Not enough Vision. I hope for more in the director's cut as it should be an hour longer than what I saw. As it is, there's not enough scenes with Vision and Tony together. And I didn't understand what excacly is Vision. Bruce said that they needed 3 mins to transfer Jarvis into the body. They were interrupted but then there was Thor and I just Oo. Also no idea about Vision and Tony relationship.
Natasha and Bruce's romance is wtf. Clint's family is very at your face with family values and "we need to defend this". Fury is very nice. Not enough Rhodey. Maximoffs' motivation is silly.
Halk VS Iron Man was the best bit.
I didn't find 3D all that impressive and feel that 2D would do just as well. I liked 3D in Iron Man 3...
The after credits scene was too short. I don't care for Tanatos and the gems, so whatever.
Overal I loved the movie and I'm bummed that they didn't show naked Vision.(
Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
But;
Things I liked:
-Nat and Clint's friendship, I'm glad that survived in this movie because they are my Marvel brotp(and while I knew she was being paired with Bruce ahead of going in I was glad to see that they were still both important to each other).
-Maria, fucking, Hill. Carry on lady, carry on.
-Clint got a good deal tbh, we got to see more of his character and I really liked that. His family was also pretty cute(if out of nowhere).
-The twins. Wanda was cool, and while she's not comic!Wanda I don't mind the changes and I'm interested to see where her story goes. Also I did not care one bit when Pietro died the first time round, but the second time I did care(still not a whole lot, but I was like 'aw man' when he bit it).
-Vision. While I do think his origin was a bit rushed I also thought he was cool(also kind shipping Wanda/Vison a bit and I know that's my comics shipping of them messing with my brain).
-Rhodey!! I liked him coming in at the end, that was cool. Rhodey is cool.
-Got a small cameo of Sam, yay more Sam! Also his new suit at the end was nice looking.
-Seeing some Red Room stuff with Nat was really cool, I just wish we had gotten more and I want a Black Widow movie even more so now(which we wont fucking get).
-Thor!! While I do think he was barely in the film I did like what I saw of him, he was just mostly there to set up infinity wars and shit, but he was cool.
-The new Avnegers line up actually looks pretty cool.
Things I didn't like:
-Steve, oh Steve bb. Granted his lines weren't all awful or anything but jesus he mostly felt like he was taking in one-liners the entire movie.
-Ultron, was not a fan sadly. Like I really enjoyed him when he first showed up talking to JARVIS and he was all cold and menacing and then it just spiraled into another Whedon villain. Oh well.
-Some of the fight scenes just looked godawful, and too much CGI as well I think.
-Tony Stark can officially fuck off forever kthnxbai.
-Natasha should have been able to BREAK OUT OF THAT FUCKING RUSTY ASS CELL, REALLY. That was dumb. Also to add to that there was no point in Ultron kidnapping her in the first place, it was just so they could find where he was but honestly they could have done that another way(it's a superhero movie, we're used to unrealistic dumb-shit).
-Deus Ex Hellicarrier, like where were you hiding that Fury? And I supposed you just happened to find about 200 people to staff it as well? And I guess you aren't pretending to be dead anymore so that whole plot from TWS was a waste of time(actually lets tack on ignoring TWS like it never even happened, IM3 too).
Things I'm meh on:
-Nat/Bruce. On paper I didn't mind the idea of it because I can honestly dig Natasha paired up with anyone in the MCU, but it just didn't really work for me.
-Hulkbuster fight was cool I guess but felt it a bit tacked on, like it was put in because they wanted the fight, not because it made much sense.
-While Clint's family was quite cute it was another thing that was out of nowhere, but I guess that also comes with the fact that out of all the Avengers he's the one we know the least.
Overall it was okay, nothing ground-breaking but not completely awful to me either. I just personally think that they perhaps had too many characters and things to do in it and it wasn't juggled all that well.

Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
(Anonymous) 2015-05-04 12:37 am (UTC)(link)Vision was the best new addition, I gotta give props to that actor for having presence through all the makeup and cg and managing to do a good job for a character introduced so late in the film.
I'm getting tired of all the Natasha wank and Bruce/Nat wank. I didn't think they were written the BEST but I didn't think they were as bad as fandom are making them out to be either.
I want to see the movie again, probably not in theaters but it will go on my dvd list.
Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
I also think that the movie had one of the worst cuts of the whole MCU. I think MCU movies have a tendency to cut out important, character and plot relevant scenes in favour of 20 minutes more of explosions and character assassination but it never was as bad as I suspect it to have been in this case. (The whole Thor goes on a quests scene alone seemed oddly disconnected and disjointed.)
Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
It was so good!! Loved it! Also Bruce is my favorite so A+++.
Interestingly, I was not expecting his thing with Nat to work out as well as it did. But while I don't have any AoU recs at all (yet...I will be browsing this thread!) I do have one for a really good Bruce/Nat fic that was written post-first movie if you'd like it.
I wasn't sure how this movie's Bruce would hold up to my expectations, but I was so happy with how he was written and, honestly, I loved the focus on all of the characters - especially Bruce, Nat and Clint since they don't have their own movies and aren't generally as developed in terms of backstory as the other three. ALSO, can I just say I love Nat and Clint's friendship. I wavered for a while on whether I shipped them romantically, but I think this just works out so well for them, and it's super rad to have a close m/f relationship shown like that.
At the beginning, after seeing the twins, I was like "man it would be so cool to have them on the Avengers' side." THEN GUESS WHAT? Also, do you think Pietro is really dead, or just Joss!dead? I think he's dead, but one of the people I went to see it with thinks he'll be back. IDK. It's nice in a narrative to sometimes just let a death be a death - but I was also super heartbroken for Wanda. :(
Loved all the funny lines. Love, love, loved the party scene so much. So much friendshippy adorable fluff. (Slice-of-life fics anyone? :3)
There are so many other things I could comment on...but most of it just boils down to "that was awesome". Also I loved the humor, I feel like there was even more of it than before and it was so spot-on for all of the characters.

Spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron
(Anonymous) 2015-05-04 04:03 am (UTC)(link)The Natasha/Bruce romance was okay. The twins were okay. Clint’s family was fine. Ultron was an okay villain. But I wasn’t really excited about any of it.
I did like the way Thor and Steve worked together. I liked the hammer scene. I liked Clint’s joke after Pietro calls him old man. I kind of liked the end, though I didn’t think War Machine/Rhodey had much charisma and I couldn’t get much of a feel for Vision.
Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
Re. AoU I haven't decided if I want to see it. I happily spoil myself and Natasha is one of my fave characters so everything I'm hearing is a bit side eye worthy. And as much as I love Stark I am wishing they'd dial him back a bit.
So not sure if gonna bother seeing in cinema.
