(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)I don't doubt there's people who are truly asexual, though. I just think there's other issues at play too.
I think a lot of the other labels are nonsense or overlabeling, but no sweat off my back if people use them.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)Asexuality, I don't know. I absolutely believe asexuality is a real thing and some people never experience sexual attraction. But I'm a little skeptical of teenagers who claim that. I myself didn't become sexual at all until college, I had no desire to have sex and was really turned off when my high school boyfriends tried to take things beyond kissing. I didn't masturbate until I was 19 (whenever I had tried before, I felt nothing). I just mean, I think it's normal to not necessarily become a sexual person the moment you hit puberty. I suppose the term "asexuality" in that case might be appropriate as a possible non-permanent thing, but having that identity does imply that it's a permanent part of who you are. Which again, I'm willing to believe is true for a lot of people, but idk I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't actually a permanent thing for a lot of teenagers who think they might be asexual.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)I have no problem with the basic idea of "demi"-ness, but I don't feel it's broad enough to have a "-sexuality" at the end of it.
If you can say "demisexual heterosexual" there's obviously redundancy there. Say "demi heterosexual" if you must, but I wouldn't call demi a sexuality. It's a version of whichever one of the others applies

more to the point though
(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)determining legitness by how many teenagers latch onto it makes no sense because teenagers latch onto literally everything

Demisexuality is overlabelling. If you look at statistics it would seem that most of the entire world is "demisexual", so I take it as people who don't actually understand how other people behave trying to create a label to seem special.
Re: Asexuality, demisexuality, etc
I don't really buy the whole split-orientation sexual/romantic thing, but it's not something to fight over.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:09 am (UTC)(link)However, often I find that, when pressed, these people will also admit they wouldn't date someone they don't find physically attractive and not just in an aesthetically pleasing fashion. That's the difference between normal and demi. Someone normal will have physical attraction they may or may not act upon, while someone demi will not have it at all and it will only appear after a strong emotional bond. Demi just denotes that it's later in the relationship that attraction forms. (That said, I agree with the person who said it should be more an added prefix than anything else, and also emotional attraction isn't always physical attraction.)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)Demisexuality is the special snowflake label for something that it's pretty common, but it's not a sexuality, since it just describes how many people experience attraction.
Re: Asexuality, demisexuality, etc
It's why the "levels" of asexuality make me roll my eyes, but I won't completely dismiss it the way I can demisexuality. Demisexuality is the goddamn norm.
