How much do I think you are a troll?

Not even an original troll. We've had like 900,000,000 threads of this sort before.

0% legit 100% teenage bullshit.

I think asexuality is legit. I don't know enough about demisexuality to be sure.

I DO think claiming you're half-human is bullshit.

Heterosexual, Homosexual, Bisexual, Pansexual (only sort of), and Asexual. All others are special snowflakes. Especially demisexual.

Someone mentioned a couple of posts back that people going for the asexual label might be overlooking medical concerns and I'm inclined to agree. Society's weird views on sex probably don't help much either.

I don't doubt there's people who are truly asexual, though. I just think there's other issues at play too.

I think a lot of the other labels are nonsense or overlabeling, but no sweat off my back if people use them.

Yeah, that's the big concern I have with asexuality. I sure as hell felt asexual for a while, but it turned out it was because of health issues. Now that those are taken care of, it turns out I'm actually sexual.

Since I'm not sure demisexuality means anything significant, I guess it could be "real", it's just... normal, therefore it does not need a title.

Asexuality, I don't know. I absolutely believe asexuality is a real thing and some people never experience sexual attraction. But I'm a little skeptical of teenagers who claim that. I myself didn't become sexual at all until college, I had no desire to have sex and was really turned off when my high school boyfriends tried to take things beyond kissing. I didn't masturbate until I was 19 (whenever I had tried before, I felt nothing). I just mean, I think it's normal to not necessarily become a sexual person the moment you hit puberty. I suppose the term "asexuality" in that case might be appropriate as a possible non-permanent thing, but having that identity does imply that it's a permanent part of who you are. Which again, I'm willing to believe is true for a lot of people, but idk I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't actually a permanent thing for a lot of teenagers who think they might be asexual.

I don't think there needs to be any label other than heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual, because generally we're referring to how the parts line up. (penis+penis, vagina+penis, etc.) Asexual therefore doesn't need to be labeled, particularly when you get to the heteroromantic gray ace type area of labeling. Demisexuality... I think is the one that is basically bisexual? So that's redundant.

Demisexuality is just a dumb word for something that doesn't need one. I believe there are people out there who don't believe in sex before love, and that's perfectly fine, but they don't need a word for it, especially since in our society they're probably a slight majority.

Asexuality and pansexuality I'm fine with.

I couldn't give you numbers off the top of my head.

I have no problem with the basic idea of "demi"-ness, but I don't feel it's broad enough to have a "-sexuality" at the end of it.

If you can say "demisexual heterosexual" there's obviously redundancy there. Say "demi heterosexual" if you must, but I wouldn't call demi a sexuality. It's a version of whichever one of the others applies

Asexuality (and aromanticism) - legit, but overused by teenagers, and should always be double checked to make sure it's not due to medical reasons.

Demisexuality/romanticism? No.

Considering demisexuality was just taken from a teenage RPer who wanted a special name for why she wanted to hump all the other RPers on the forum, welllllll. Yeah, it's just a special snowflake term normal people grasped onto to feel like they're special and different, because they don't fit into any of actual oppressed groups.

That being said, they're free to do what they want. Shine on you normal diamonds, etc.

Asexuality = legit, demisexuality = teenagers overlabeling basic emotion.

/thread

more to the point though

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
how much of anything and everything teenagers do, is teenagers overlabeling basic emotions?

determining legitness by how many teenagers latch onto it makes no sense because teenagers latch onto literally everything

Well, I call myself demisexual, so obviously I think it's a real thing, but I know that's not the prevailing opinion.

Asexuality is legitimate. There are truly people who never want to have sex with other people.

Demisexuality is overlabelling. If you look at statistics it would seem that most of the entire world is "demisexual", so I take it as people who don't actually understand how other people behave trying to create a label to seem special.

Teenagers didn't invent most of the terms thrown around, with the possible exception of demisexuality.

I don't really buy the whole split-orientation sexual/romantic thing, but it's not something to fight over.

I think demisexual and asexual are both legit and the backlash against the former is based on society's weird views of sex, IE that you should only ever feel it toward people you have romantic attraction toward and so people feel that it is therefore normal.

However, often I find that, when pressed, these people will also admit they wouldn't date someone they don't find physically attractive and not just in an aesthetically pleasing fashion. That's the difference between normal and demi. Someone normal will have physical attraction they may or may not act upon, while someone demi will not have it at all and it will only appear after a strong emotional bond. Demi just denotes that it's later in the relationship that attraction forms. (That said, I agree with the person who said it should be more an added prefix than anything else, and also emotional attraction isn't always physical attraction.)

Asexuality is legit, but most people using it on tumblr are probably not asexuals.

Demisexuality is the special snowflake label for something that it's pretty common, but it's not a sexuality, since it just describes how many people experience attraction.

Eh, asexuality feels really fake to me sometimes. Especially since I can honestly say I was on that spectrum before I met my SO. Lo libido, no real interest in sex while I was in my teens, tho0ugh I read smut fic.

It's why the "levels" of asexuality make me roll my eyes, but I won't completely dismiss it the way I can demisexuality. Demisexuality is the goddamn norm.
