Characters You Hate Seeing Being Called "Whiny"

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's common in fandom for characters to be accused of being "whiny" or "crybabies" or "not strong enough" often by people who seem to think they totally could have been handled better.

What are some characters who have been hated or criticized by fandom for being whiny or complaining too much that you think are being given an unfair rap or ridiculous expectations because of age or circumstances or whatever? Why?

(If you come to contest someone's claim, please don't be an ass, and try to give an argument of their own why they don't actually have it that bad, or complain more than take action. Try not to make personal jabs at people. It's not that hard to debate like civilized adults.

I like Capslock!Harry in OotP. I wouldn't handle the situation he was in very well either. I'm pretty sure I yelled at friends for much pettier reasons at that age.

Harry gets criticized a lot for that book, but honestly, it struck me as fairly typical behavior for a 15-year-old, especially one who was going through a lot of real shit. *shrug*

Same. Like that's some tough stuff to deal with.

Re: Characters You Hate Seeing Being Called "Whiny"

See I agree with this.

People forget that Harry had to deal with a lot of the shit he dealt with alone. He didn't like to open up with people and trouble them with his personal woes and learned from a young age that he had to deal with things alone. The Dursleys sure as hell wouldn't help.

He dealt with a lot of trauma, like watching a classmate die, and he never got any help with possible PTSD. Not to mention as a young child his only adult example or father figure for as long as he could actually remember was Vernon Dursley. I don't think Vernon was a poster boy for good anger management skills, and considered it a good day if he got to yell at people. Until he was eleven at least.

Harry pulled through and made it through the skin of his teeth sometimes. It's impossible and unrealistic to expect him to always be able to manage his anger in constructive healthy ways as he never really learned how.

In the abusive household he grew up in he was suppressing it all the time, and watched his uncle go around yelling , blustering at and bullying people for ten years, and his aunt enabled all his uncle and cousins behavior. She probably took out her own aggression and anger on Harry himself.

I agree.

I think Harry's characterization in OotP makes sense: he's a teenager; his parents were murdered, and their murderer is after him, and he's expected to defeat said murderer, and said murderer has already made multiple attempts on his life; the people who raised him were abusive; no one will tell him what's going on; and he's seen people die. If anything, he's handling things remarkably well.

Capslock!Harry wasn't anywhere as difficult a teenager as my little sister, and she DIDN'T have a genocidal evil overlord after her life.

Also, I was around Harry's age when OotP first came out, and I'm absolutely certain that the grand majority of my peers were acting way more immature than Harry ever did.

I agree with this. Capslock!Harry's actually a pretty damn realistic depiction of a 15 year old in mourning and living in a shitty situation.

The problem I have is when people assume that his behavior being understandable makes reading about it enjoyable - the number of people who assume if you didn't like OotP it's because you think Harry's unreasonably whiny in it drives me up the wall.

Hope from FFXIII - he was always called whiny! I felt very maternal toward him.

I mean, kid characters are very, very hit or miss, but I feel like if they are done with genuine intent I tend to like them (as opposed to being mouthpieces or symbols for another character's development). Genuinely a kid being angsty in a terrifying situation doesn't strike me as whiny, instead I'm mostly genuinely concerned for them.

The funny part is that Sazh and Hope did a lot of the same whining, and Sazh actually broke harder than Hope did, but Sazh wound up being the fan favorite. I guess that's what you get when you dual-wield pistols and have a bird living in your afro.

I think part of this has to do with age? I wasn't much older than Hope when the game first came out and I couldn't STAND him. I thought he was the whiniest, most irritating character by far.

But when I replayed the game last year, I liked him a lot better. I still thought he was whiny, but it was tempered with the fact that, in his position, I think we'd ALL be whiny. He's still not my fav. character (Vanille <3 <3 <3 ) but I don't hate him any more.

I never got the whiny label either. Hope is a shy teenager who isn't good at confrontations, sees his mother die in front of him, and then is forced to work with the man he thinks is responsible for her death. He's a bit passive aggressive, but not whiny.

I think that the backlash to FFXIII was so great that all of the characters get disproportionately hated.

Loki. In the first movie his "whining" was pretty justified. He did just find out that his life was a lie. And before his father/kidnapper could explain it, he Odinsleep'd out.

In Avengers he wasn't really whiny. He was mostly manipulative.

In Thor 2 he was an asshole.

Friendly neighborhood sane and reasonable Loki stan checking in.

You're right.

I don't enjoy the over-woobification. If we wanna play 'can we redeem this particular fuckface,' you gotta start with him responsible for the things he did.

Skyler from Breaking Bad.

Re: Characters You Hate Seeing Being Called "Whiny"

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh Skyler. I am pretty sure in the first season they wanted you to hate her, but then the realized they could actually make her a real, sympathetic character. I don't understand anyone who calls her whiny by the end of the series.

Elena Gilbert. Lost her parents, both biological and adoptive, her guardians, and brother (he got better?) in the space of three years max. All the while she's dealing with vampires who want her dead and her entire life ended up centering two vampires who wanted to bone her. I'd have broken down too.

Luke Skywalker. Yeah, he was whiny to start: he was a teenager with big dreams trapped on shitty space Australia, I'd whine too. He gets down to business quick enough, and if loving him, han, and Leia spending the entire rescue yelling at each other is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

Titus from FFX.

Yes, he grew up privileged and coddled -- but that's part of why he actually isn't whiny at all. He gets transported 1000 years into the future, touching down in a strange world with strange rules populated by strange people, completely separated from everything he's ever loved or known, and he...adapts. And he focuses himself toward a goal, enough so that he inspires others. Rather than give into the completely understandable despair that someone in his position would feel, he acts, and moves forward.

He's still a kid, and he's still goofy and awkward, and he's got daddy issues, but I really don't think he's as bad as people make him out to be.

Uchiha Sasuke. At least as far as the "early" chapters go (and since this is Naruto, I'm talking first couple hundred or so). I'm not in the fandom anymore, but when I was it was the cool thing to be like, who caaaaares that your whole family was killed and you were mentally tortured as a little kid by the person closest to you and pretty much have PTSD except it's not the kind of series that would ever address a thing like that? Just get over it and stop being so whiny, jeez!

Super cliche answer here, but: Shinji Ikari. The series makes a humongous deal of the fact that the kid's a depressed, terrified wreck who's suffering horribly from his father's awfulness and having the weight of the world just suddenly dropped on his shoulders one day, and yet so many people seem to think he's some sort of failure as a character because he's not a typical shonen protagonist or something. (Spoiler alert: that's the whole point.)

Harry Potter. He was a tiny bit whiny, but he more than earned the right to be whiny for a book after what happened to him in book 4 (and his whole life really).

Luke Skywalker. People say this, and I don't get it at all. He didn't seem whiny to me.

Laurel Lance from Arrow. Especially during season two.

I never understood the ''whiny'' complaint. She was a woman with mental illness (depression and addiction) who was noticeably struggling to cope with trauma and immense grief. I feel like she reacted to the numerous traumas in her life incredibly realistically. She wasn't ''whiny.'' She was traumatized, depressed, and struggling. And no one would help her. They all looked down on her for it.

Not to mention, the depiction of depression was what really made me appreciate her character and the actress. It was like looking in a mirror. What a lot of people seemed to refuse to understand was that mental illness isn't a one size fits all kind of thing. Not everyone reacts or copes with it in the same way. It doesn't mean they're whiny. It means they're struggling.

Also the people around her were really shitty to her, so she 100% had a right to be angry with them.
