Re: Advice Thread
(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)Also, I want to keep this relatively short. I usually take 15k+ for a fic and I have time for about a 5k. So, any thoughts on writing short AUs? This fic also has to be shippy so I have to give time for romance, which also increases the length of a fic.
Re: Advice Thread
(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)And also - I mean, in my experience, when we say "period" we often mean "genre", right? So for instance I think when you have a supernatural Western, or something like that, that's not really going to be an 1870s period piece. It's mostly going to be referencing the Western as a genre, not the actual historical moment. And so if you're doing a modern updating on that, it's really more of a genre AU - not just changing the period, but changing the genre logic from Western to something like, you know, American college story, or whatever. Because in addition to the different settings and societies, you also have a basically different set of expectations with regards to genres across those two cases.
Am I making sense here or just rambling?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 05:37 am (UTC)(link)Some sort of convention? Either supernatural (in the vein of something like a home show or gun show or something like that) or something Comic-conish of the characters might be into.
Rock star AU?
Superhero AU?

But I know a lot of other people who don't like it because they want more information provided than Duolingo gives outright. In fact I know more people who don't like it than people who do. I just got lucky that it fits my preferences perfectly.
Re: Advice Thread
(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)That being said, the times I've used it, I've only done it in spurts. Learning a language is hard when you rely on self-motivated and don't have structure to push you through when you get lazy. And I don't think anything is a true substitute for finding a language conversation partner and actually speaking. That being said, for the cost of $0, Duolingo is probably the best you'll find.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)Con (in my view): I think you get more vocabulary/phrases than grammar? At least, to the extent that it teaches grammar it does so by putting phrases in front of you and getting you to just recognize them by using them. So, to use terms really broadly, closer to an immersion experience than a textbook? If you're the kind of person who wants to really understand the mechanics of a language, it probably will frustrate you. And if you pick up languages quickly, you might get frustrated with the pace.
Pro: it's easy, it's free, and it does teach you a lot just through a trial-and-error/immersion kind of learning. It also has you use the language in a lot of different ways, including speaking! Which you won't get from a textbook. The way the app (or the website, I suppose--I have the app) looks and works is fun, there's a bit of a game element involved, and you can adjust the settings so that it pushes you to do a little more in order to keep up a streak/win points/etc. Since I have it on my phone, for a while it became the thing where, if I had a moment where I had too much time and started getting bored, I'd say "better do my duolingo for the day!!" So it's a great replacement for solitaire, lol.
Bottom line: it's good. How good it is depends on what you're looking for, and I don't know how far it can take you, ultimately? I didn't advance very far in the end, but I'm lazy.

If you're thirty, your parents are probably older/aging, so if you *must* explain yourself (which is not incumbent upon you), just say it helps them with bills/health issues/mobility/whatever. I'd move in with my mom/have her move in with me in a heartbeat if i could.
Re: Advice Thread
Lots of people stay with their families. No shame in that.
