29: One of the first lines on your profile is while I really despise atheism, I have no problem at all with individual atheists if they're nice people, so you're not exactly an unbiased bastion of decent philosophy yourself.

41: I did the same thing. :D "Ahaha, this show would be perfect for fandom... wait wait this does have a fandom?"

29 OP

We're not affiliated, he just lets me piggyback on his Photobucket.

lol are you my art teacher?

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
10. It depends. When speaking about authors who are long past the point in their lives where they want to write Sues or other self-inserts, OCs can be fascinating. For a series with a large cast, too, one questions the need for OCs, but in others (for example, my own fandom, in which the main characters are detectives) it makes no sense not to have OCs. Once the cases that appear in the story proper are finished, there's little call for the main cast to revisit those characters. OCs are necessary to bring in new cases.

I'm also writing a backstory for a character in the same game about whom almost nothing is known, except for where he came from. At first I tried to limit the number of OCs (at least the ones that couldn't be justified through the story's canon, like his mentor), but then I realized how unrealistic it was. He lived in a city of millions, that none of the rest of the cast ever visited, and it would have taken any number of people to train him. To have him grow up in a vaccuum purely for the sake of avoiding OCs is just plain assinine.

So, yeah, there are now tons of them.

6. Me too ;o;

10. . . . I don't think there's anything I have to say to argue with this that other people haven't already said better.

33. I don't think anyone's recommended Susan Cooper yet, but The Dark is Rising sequence is brilliant. (The movie did it the exact opposite of justice.) I really liked Michael Winerip's Adam Canfield of the Slash and Karen Romano Young's Cobwebs, too.
Come to think of it, maybe I'll go poke at [Unknown site tag] for Cobwebs people. Now that was actual original teen fantasy romance. And gorgeous worldbuilding.

51. I've been freaked out just by hearing some of the stuff that gets written for that pairing. Using Jack Harkness's severed body parts as sex toys? The hell?

72. I was gonna wonder if this was a troll from Bones fandom, but those won't be showing up here till Saturday.

Re: 51

(Anonymous) 2008-05-23 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
... And the Master using the Doctor's severed hand as a sex toy. Let's not forget all the regen snuff kink fic. And the general consensus that on a long enough timeline, the Master will rape/abuse/torture the Doctor into being his wanton love slave and that's A-OK, because the Doctor deserves to be broken into tiny pieces and fucked into dust because he totes destroyed Gallifrey.

Having either of the two succeed in destroying/saving the other completely throws off the balance of their dynamic.

Besides, the Master really does just want the Doctor to bend him over the TARDIS console and shag him stupid. >.>

9. Why would you be embarassed? Haha. OCR ftw btw.

47. lol /cgl/ ftw. and moar for fapping lol.

58. Oh man, that just totally made me flash back to all the good times. I remember everyone use to say, *walks in*.

82. Haha, I would do. That's so lame.

[identity profile] dried-frog-pill.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
33. Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy. READ IT. Also, Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians is also a fun series, as is anything by Diana Wynne Jones. Yay Bruce Coville love :D

44. I still can't really watch the whole opening sequence of that movie, because it frightened me so much as a kid :( But I'm not a huge ET fan to begin with, so...

54. HOLY SHIT I REMEMBER THIS MOVIE. HIGH FIVE.

10

[identity profile] lunarkitten.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I've got to say I disagree. I love OCs -- not Mary Sues, mind you -- and I love playing around with them. I think it can be fun to see the story from another character's point of view, and I don't really mind if they're a love interest to a canon character or if they're next-gen or what have you. I know I'm in the minority here, but I like to see what others can come up with as long as they're well-done. If an OC is a generic cookie-cutter self-insert, then I won't bother. But if they're a well-rounded character who adds something to the story, then yes, I'll read it. I would much rather read an OC fic than a shipping fic.

Besides, what might be an OC today could be a character for an original story tomorrow. I'm thinking of taking one of my OCs and developing it into an original story.

39. Holy snit, Tales of Mu secret. I don't think there's been one before. :D

Hang on, OP. Some of us love Steff and Amy as believably flawed peopletypes, we're just drowned out by a few vocal dissenters on the comments. No one has to choose.

50. May I be the first to direct you to the Lost Girls' Pirate Academy (http://www.myspace.com/lostgirlspirateacademy) (Lost Boys Also Accepted)? Never grow up, never give in, and if eighteen's too old for Neverland I must have missed a memo a decade ago.

no. not at all.

10

[identity profile] dwh.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's been said many times already, but honestly, enough with the OC hate. Yes, there are some awful OCs out there. But there are a number of OCs that I like better than some of the canon characters. It's not about whether the character is canon or OC, it's about how well they're written.

It's true, I came for the canon characters. But I can only read so many variations on the same story. OCs are what have kept me writing and interested.

[identity profile] obsydian.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
52. Me too. I AM NOT ASHAMED!

Super late to this party, but had to, because of 36, 44, 51, and 61

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
36. Postal Service secret FTW! Their songs are just like that, aren't they? I love that you can figure out things about yourself just by listening. Don't know what song you're talking about, though. Clark Gable?

44. OMG ME TOO. Ugghhh, my parents used to always rent that movie for me when I was little, and GEEBUS did it creep me out. I refuse to watch that movie.

51. FAVORITE. SECRET. EVER. Literally, you might as well be me. I love Doctor Who, I love slash, I love the Doctor and the Master together, but I just don't fit in the following for them. They're all... yay! Make the Doctor suffer! Grab your torch and pitchforks, let's drain his fluids and then chop him up, toast the pieces, and stick them in salads at shady alien restaurants. And I'm not saying that a fic like that isn't interesting once and a while, the whole Master-dominating-the-Doctor's-scrawny-arse-and-making-him-into-a-slave thing. But every fic? Come on, guys. Fucked-up sex actually does get old for me. Really, OP, if you comment on this, I'm friending you. I can't believe there's someone else out there. xD

61. Search google for "david tennant naked." That's all I'm saying.

65. Oh god, me too. Me too. In retrospect it seems like an odd thing to want, considering that things were pretty awful for them, but I wanted it anyway.

16

Dude, me too. >_> I mean, I'd probably bang Joel first, given the choice, but Crow is definitely a close second. I imagine he'd be totally gung-ho about it, and also completely clueless. XD

37. Truly, there is no more unjust oppression than the continuous efforts of slash fanfic writers to subvert and degrade heterosexual privilege wherever they may find it.
Also, in their spare time, they are recruiting your children. Oh, please.

One might wonder how you live daily with the pain of having your perspective on and presence in media apologized away, marginalized, and sanitized for the benefit of all the people in this fine old world who find the whole idea uncomfortable, ridiculous or just plain disgusting.
Not to mention those who like to remain in ignorance so as to hone their subtext-denying skills.

Then again, if you're heterosexual, it's likely that living with that particular pain is an experience of which you're very likely to remain blissfully ignorant.

It's a big internet.
More time spent writing what you love, and less spent passive-aggressively policing fandom will very likely make your online experience more pleasant for everyone involved - including yourself.

42. Otacon, is that you? ♥

(Anonymous) 2008-05-23 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You fail at understanding the point the series was trying to make. Because Lord knows that yaoi=real life gay. Totally. I mean, it's exactly like it, right? And while we're at it, fandom=real life. Oh, and while we're still at it, the secret was so about how the poster hates yaoi and wants it to go away forever, wasn't it. I mean, she said right there that she doesn't ship it ever or anything, and only wants her hetro pairings to be popular, yeah?

Loser.

15. Trippy. This image makes me mildly dizzy. @_@ Sweet sentiment though, whoever it's directed at. =)

33. Pshh, grownup smownup. YA books are fun. (I recommend the Wrinkle in Time books by Madeline L'Engle, btw. I need to reread them sometime...)

37. I totally see where you're coming from. While I'm a big ol' slasher, I also like my het pairings and feel like they're kind of being...pushed under the rug in fandom in general. It's gotten a little nuts.

61. I lol-ed. XD

64. Average Joe vampires are win. =9

69. I agree, he's a very complex, relatable and realistic character. I doubt anyone could be as strong as him in that situation, really.

72. You mean, uh, in fantasy, right? Not judging if it's fantasy. Just, y'know, clarifying. T_T

77. My friends and I made a point of watching that together just because it was MPREG.

01. When I was playing Vanguard our entire guild fell apart over loot drama. Now that I've started playing WoW, I've given myself strict instructions to not guild up and just let it go if someone starts shit over loot. Contrary to popular belief, loot is SRS BIZ.

54. I love that movie. ♥

(Anonymous) 2008-05-23 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
01 I thought that the popular belief _was_ that loot is srs bznz...

[identity profile] aquila-star.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
omg! whoever posted the not!secret Herald-Mage secret needs to send me a message. I just finished the series again and I'm thinking I need to write some Van/Stef smut to make up for the sad lack of actual sex in the books. :D

Not OP but...

[identity profile] dynus.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
oh oh! Please do! It totally does!

Man, I need to reread those. I liked them, they weren't great, but they were fun, which is the point right?

26. In my first playthrough of IX, I renamed Vivi, Orko. It`s still my first thought whenever I see him.

57. You and me both.

63. Agreed. The Geass threads on /a/ entertain me like nothing else, but I still wish the rest of the fandom was just a bit more lively.
