10. Sometimes in situations like fanfic, you really HAVE to make up new characters. I'm in the process of writing Professor Layton-fic - I'm not gonna spoil the games, but in both of the currently released ones it's kind of impossible to use any 'outer' characters for things not linked to their plotline. You have three consistent main characters, and while that makes for good short fic/ship-fic, it's kind of hard in multi-chapter genfic.
In terms of fanart and so on.... I agree.
