39. Heh. I tried reading that a while back. I got fed up because there was no plot, it was just all 'o hai lesbian sex and kinks'. And the author sort of came off as a bitch as well.

50. Dude. I'm 21 and I still want to fly off with Peter Pan. Don't feel bad about it.

64. I lurve vampires. But I hate them in ruffles. HATE. Goddamit, just because they've lived for x amount of years, doesn't mean they can't fucking adapt. I want my vamps in jeans and hoodies, or possibly business suits, trenchcoats and boxers, modern clothing and no FUCKING RUFFLES AND VELVET. Unless you're Terry Pratchett.

72. Hahahaha.

82. Hehe, dumbapples... I don't give a flying shit what people say, I love the whole godsdamned Compilation. Erm, sorry. Just tossing that out there.

To me, vampires tend to look dark and clean-cut, but ambiguous. Basic black everything, normal pants and shirts, suits, long coats. (Though girl vampires can go a bit dressier, but still mostly modern.)

34 - Me too!

37 - I'm with you there. I read slash, I like slash, but I can see my flist slipping away because I mainly read het at the moment. The reason I love slash is because it should be something rare, love against all the odds, love that surmounts all obstacles. People who have found each other and who belong together no matter what sex they are...

My boyfriend hit the nail on the head, when I've mentioned slash in the past he's said 'why does everyone have to be gay? I don't get it!' *uses most flippant slash icon*

53 - I think he's cute too.

72 - Bloody hell! LOL!

[identity profile] glitterfairy25.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
#15 - that's cute :)
#19 - that's hot
#25 - "ass" sounds stupid in British fics. Although I agree its a much sexier term for the behind than "arse". Still, I wouldn't get so hooked up on it. There are worse things in life. Like use of the word "gotten".
#29 - who?
#31 - ahh, she is pretty :)
#37 - I think one of the things about slash is that it's sometimes written better than het. The her is there to make the "mainstream" fanpeople squee, and sometimes it's shoved down their throats (see Ashes to Ashes). The slash isn't, and is all about figuring out your own little mystery, if you like, interpreting stuff... it's fun. I see your point though. All my OTPs are slash, and the ratio of slash to het pairings that I ship is about 6:1, if that.
#44 - some people LOVE ET. The fact is, I never watched it when I was younger. I never have. I couldn't get past the first five minutes. He freaks me out. To this day I don't have a clue what happens, apart from the famous bike scene.
#51 - Doctor/Master. Meh.
#52 - me too.
#55 - NO! DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE. I think Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry are one of the greatest partnerships ever, and I truly hope they'll be, like, BFFs for ever. On the other hand, Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt are kinda cute together. They are both funny for me, but not all the time. So, in conclusion... I DON'T KNOW, I ADORE THEM BOTH.
#56 - meh, Sooty made me want to be a linguist.
#72 - WHAT.
#77 - I don't get this. Is it cancelled or should it be or has it got bad or what?

Anything by William Nicholson, (who wrote the Gladiator film if that means anything) and Tamora Pierce (she's on lj at [profile] tammypierce, if you want to see what she's like), especially her 'Circle' universe. Diana Wynne-Jones is awesomesauce too (the anime film Howl's Moving Castle is based off her book, although IMHO it's not her best.)

I'll second Diana Wynne-Jones. (Personally I loved Howl's Moving Castle, but not the movie...) In the process of getting my little sister to read her stuff, it's all so good. Eight Days of Luke, Castle in the Air, Dark Lord of Derkholm/Year of the Griffin, Dogsbody...there's a lot that I haven't read by her that I'd rather like to. Tamora Pierce is good stuff too, though only read a few.

Also like to plug the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, though that's aimed at an older audience.

Sorry to hi-jack your comment! I just...love books. ♥

19: Okay, I have a vague knowledge of American politics shows (through The Daily Show, mainly), but I keep stumbling across this man's name and some of the...*inspired* reactions he causes. I should go and check him out.

25: When Brits write for fandoms like Buffy, or Lost, or...well, pretty much any of the big shows, we have to Americanise our language. We shouldn't have to do that for fic set in our own country! The word ass is barely (excuse the pun) used in our vocabulary; arse is, so we use that. Any further suggestions that don't kill the mood? I'm not sure there's a list of synonyms in Microsoft Word for the word "arse".

*runs off and checks*

51: [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail, for fic in which the Master plans to take over the world but gets sidetracked by marrying the Doctor and becoming domesticated. And stories like that. They are hilarious and brilliant, and so is the author; you should check them out! (Hope she won't mind me reccing her here. Just find her fiction tag and there's plenty there!)

53: Even if he had shit on his head?

4. Heh. I have a whole bunch of bad fanfiction on my harddrive that I've collected from various sites, and MST them for kicks :D I'm too afraid to put them on the web, though. Even if the story was written 10 years ago, there's a part of me that's paranoid the author will find it and freak out. http://svamcentral.org/ewic/mstings.html has a bunch of golden stuff :D

11. I have an OCD problem and I use Monk to make me feel better, because at least I'm not THAT bad!

44. I saw the first 10 or so minutes of this movie when I was 6 and it JUST came out - I haven't attempted to finish it to this day, I'm that afraid of that blasted alien :O I have a neighbor that put up a GIANT, INFLATABLE E.T. on her lawn about two years ago for Halloween, and I avoided driving by there when I could. Argh.

I can understand where you're coming from if the rest of the fic is in American and she/he just whips out 'arse' because it's a British fandom.

But saying that you can't take a fic seriously if it uses proper English? FAIL.

I wish more people liked OCs, and I don't think people should be bullied into not writing them into a story. Creativity shouldn't be about what the masses want--I say if that's what you want to write into a fanfiction story, go ahead, no holds barred. No one is paying you and if people don't like it, there is that beautiful, shiny back-button.

Besides, well written OCs, for me, are pure gold. You can get a lot more insight into canon characters with their fresher perspective.

Re: #10

(Anonymous) 2008-05-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)

I completely agree with this. It's gotten to the point where I've been nervous about posting my het fic in a community for a show where that pairing is practically canon because I'm paranoid that everyone else slashes, even though that fandom is still so small that I'm not sure if they even do. If that makes any sense.

Re: 37

(Anonymous) 2008-05-22 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had my favourite pairing in a show hijacked for slash. Now, if you write anything but teh slash! sex!, you are pointedly ignored to the point of ostrasization :(.

29. Why the Richard Dawkins' hate? He's a smart guy. Now I don't agree with his religious views. (I'm Catholic.) But still, when he sticks to science versus bashing religion, he's amazing.

I choose to ignore him when he goes on an anti-religion rant.

It's like me with Mel Gibson. I think the guy is an idiot as well but, man, can the guy make movies. So, I choose to ignore the man and enjoy his work.

33. Hey, don't feel bad. I worked at a library for over 7 years. Some of the best and more imaginative books were aimed at the teens and younger set.

I started reading them because kids would come in and ask for similar books. But I got hooked because they were so much fun.

Now since you've asked, check out Holly Black's books, "Tithe: A modern faerie tale" and "Valiant" A modern faerie tale". She also did the "Spiderwick Chronicles" which though are more for the kid set are none the less great.

46. I adore the Twilight Zone. I too wish more people watched it.

61. You made me choke on my Coke laughing. Now I've got the odd image stuck in my head.

64. You are not alone. I hate the yuppie and emo vampires that seem to litter fiction there days. Now if you are looking for a good average joe series, check out Charlie Huston's "Joe Pitt" novels, "Already Dead", "No Dominion" and "Half the Blood of Brooklyn". It about a strong schlub and part time PI, (yeah, vampire PI cliche but, trust me, stick with it), in Manhatten. The books read like a crime noir novel and they are addictive.

You can read the first couple of pages here. (http://pulpnoir.com/?p=161)

4. I could say the same thing for a lot of authors…

10. Most of the time, I’d agree with you. However, if there has to be an OC in there for plot purposes, while still focusing on the canon characters, it’s justified.

18. But…but… there will always be a Char in a Gundam franchise! It’s like a law of Gundam physics!

20. Awwww, how cute.

26. LOL

37. Oh, I agree with you there, buddy. Most of my ships are het or femmeslash (which, IMHO, both usually get neglected in fandom), because I’m actually gay, and I’m really REALLY picky about my m/m pairings. And I also ship for personality and not genitalia; if the characters are boring, or don’t get along very well, I’m not going to ship them, even if it is OMG THE PEEN0RZ.

44. Like me and the Yip-Yips, my friend.

60. FOR THE WIN

68. Agreed with you. Personal taste is just that- personal. God forbid someone likes what you don’t.

70. *dies of laughter* And that’s the series that gets my mind OFF of porn! Damn you for ruining that aspect of it for me….

[identity profile] crazedninja.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
In the defense of OC creators, some fans want to create unofficial sequels to their fandoms. And a sequel without any new characters would be kind of boring. But if the sequel is created by a fan, they'd have to make their own new characters. Hence, the existence of OCs.
