(Anonymous) 2017-07-03 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, you lost me. Is it the text speak? Or is it that the character has repeatedly defined (respectfully and politely ) in universe his sexuality?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-03 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Characters in fictional universes aren't real people

(Anonymous) 2017-07-03 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but for 13 years Dean has said to anyone who asked he wasn't into men. He has said that.

DA

I think it's "claims to be straight = totally not gay" thing?

Like, as a queer person I sure have claimed to be straight before depending on who I was talking to and how much shit I wanted to deal with.

By this logic, any character that says they are gay might actually be straight. maybe they are just confused!

(Anonymous) 2017-07-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You make that sound like it's a joke but I don't understand why they couldn't be bi. Willow claiming "I used to be in sexual and romantic love with men but nope, gay now" is the classic example of this.

Now, is it questionable taste to turn a gay character bi in your fanfic? I don't know, people can decide that for themselves.

this "retort" would only make sense if there were as many cultural reasons a straight man would claim to be gay as there are reasons a gay man would stay closeted. you cannot remove that context from this hypothetical.

IDK doesn't your friend kind of have a point? A fictional character claiming they're straight isn't the same as a real person doing it. Unless there's canonical context to imply Dean isn't straight (besides queerbait for fangirls), that's really all the reason you need to think he is.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It is the same if you want to discuss ANY media like it is the real world.

Well, it's not about whether someone is justified in saying that Dean is straight.

I think what OP is talking about is whether you can conclude that Dean is definitely and unquestionably straight, to the point where no other interpretations exist, based solely off of him saying that he is.

If you can't take the words of a character (and 10+ years of watching said character on screen), what is the point of canon?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
There is no point of canon.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
You don't enjoy canons featuring unreliable narrators, or stories about characters learning things about themselves? You take everything characters say at face value?

I'm sorry both that your imagination is so tethered to reality that you can't view Dean as a person in his own world - only the construct of other's creation - and that you apparently lack the ability to take people at their word, because you might k ow better.

I really don't understand why Dean repeatedly saying he is straight and has no interest in guys can't actually mean that he is straight and has no interest in guys. This isn't like he said it once in an ambiguous setting. He has said it multiple times in many settings. I don't care if people want to have him be bisexual in their fics, because exploring characters is what fanfic is for, but why can't someone use a character repeatedly insisting they are something as evidence they are that something? Especially when there is no evidence that the character might be an unreliable narrator on this point. This makes no sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't understand why Dean repeatedly saying he is straight and has no interest in guys can't actually mean that he is straight and has no interest in guys.

It certainly *can* mean that. The question is does it *have to* mean that.

Like, again, look at what OP actually says. Not that Dean is definitely gay. Just that this particular statement does not prove he's straight.

3. Dean Winchester is Bisexual.

No.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Interpret the text how you like, but someone else isn't stupid, much less monumentally so, for deciding that a character is telling the truth when he says something definitive about his sexuality. Can people conclude other things? Sure. But concluding that a character is straight because he says that he is in canon (and isn't shown to be obviously lying) is perfectly valid.

Re: No.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's nice that you live in a world where no one has to be in the closet, in fact I wish I lived there. Unfortunatly, in the one I live in, I work with a lot of Catholics (and actually like most of my job) so I have to stay closeted.
