You're not special OP

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't even close to an unpopular sentiment in fandom.

Frankly it's also stupid "all or nothing" bullshit.

Go to tumblr and be with your people, and leave us adults who can appreciate grown up ideas like nuance and reality, and the idea that fiction is not real without being screamed at that we're monsters.

Do you think there are any ships that are wrong?

Re: You're not special OP

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

There's ships that I find disgusting and would never want to be played out in real life, but I'm firmly of the belief that fiction is an outlet where you can explore even the most morally reprehensible things because the negative repressions are limited especially in a niche like fandom.

Re: You're not special OP

nayrt - RPF ships. Because they involve real, live human beings who could potentially have to see some stranger's fantasy about them/their friends/family. I feel that RPF is dehumanizing and encourages unhealthy behaviors towards celebrities. But as long as all the characters are fictional and shipper's use appropriate warnings on their works, while I might personally find a ship weird and gross I don't feel that they are 'wrong'.

Agreed, with the addition that some RPF-shippers think they can apply the "it's totally canon/real!" thinking to real, actual humans.

Re: You're not special OP

No, fiction is not reality. But ideas are inextricably linked to reality.

Getting off on a fic where (as one example) a teacher has sex with their fourteen-year-old student does not make one a pedophile. But it does mean they get off on a hebephilic fantasy. So what does that mean about that person?

Getting off on pedophilic and/or hebephilic fantasies ought to concern a person, even if they've never felt that attraction to a real kid before. I'm not saying that person should hate themself or feel all-encompassing shame - I wouldn't ever wish that on them. But if it doesn't concern them at all that pedo/hebephilic fantasies get them off, then their lack of concern concerns me.

Re: You're not special OP

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Why should it concern them if they've never felt attraction to a real kid?

Re: You're not special OP

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
This. If they aren't going out and trying to pick up actual teenagers then who really cares?

Re: You're not special OP

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
DA. The things that turn us on don't turn us on for no reason. It's hard to believe that a person who is turned on by ideas of something absolutely repugnant and damaging wouldn't be a bit concerned about why their response is the polar opposite of most people's. Their psyche responds to the idea of an incredibly wrong and awful thing as if it were good. "Why" is a very valid question.

Re: You're not special OP

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hi there. I'm turned on by sneezing in fiction. It gets my motor going like nothing else. It's a huge fetish for me. In real life sneezing is disgusting, snot is disgusting. Sneezing is unpleasant and gross and not the slightest bit sexy. So while I will write, RP, and read tons of fictional characters sneezing and masturbate furiously to it, you have nothing to fear from me ambushing you and sprinkling pepper on your face.

Human sexuality is weird. Just because you personally are only turned on by fictional things that you also find attractive IRL doesn't mean it's the norm.

I also enjoy watching crime shows and find them very entertaining, but I know if I saw a real dead body I would probably scream and cry and the thought of a real crime happening to a real person makes me feel sick. This is because I know fiction and reality are two different things.

man this is such a simplistic view of the whole subject

don't a vast number of people who consume this kind of porn put themselves in the place of the student not the teacher?

besides, do you really want to go down the road of "what do fictional kinks say about a person"? because if you do then most of fandom is terrible people. should people who read non-con be concerned they might assault someone in real life?

Re: You're not special OP

Not sure what AYRT would say, but IMO, people who get off on noncon should feel a little weird that they get off on the idea of rape. They don't have to be worried that they'll insult someone in real life.

If the idea of rape excites you, that's disturbing in and of itself.

Honestly if someone gets off to a fantasy but feel nothing but revulsion about the idea of it happening to someone, they shouldn't have to be concerned or ashamed. A healthy person who seperates fiction and reality shouldnt have to feel negativley because they do something you don't approve of

I have generally found that people arguing so strongly for "fiction influences reality so much" are usually those who have a problem separating fiction from reality.

When I was 14 I had a few fantasies about some of my hotter teachers. Pretty sure that doesn't make me any variety of pedo. 'Specially given how, when one of my teachers (not one I fantasised about, thank god) got arrested for fucking a student, I was disgusted down to my bones. How about that! :D
So no, no concern here.

Honestly the AYRT just wants people to feel bad for fantasizing about what they don't approve of because they find it wrong.

I'm the OP, and I really didn't think I'd have to explain this to anyone, but here we go: it's not a hebephilic fantasy if you're a kid fantasizing about having sex with an adult. Hebephilia is the sexual preference, of an adult, for adolescent children.

If your teacher had fantasized about you, that would have been a hebephilic fantasy. It doesn't go both ways.

Getting off on pedophilic and/or hebephilic fantasies ought to concern a person

God, this.

Like, when did something this basic become a controversial opinion in fandom?

Whenever it really starts to fuck with my brain that a bunch of fandom thinks writing smutty underage noncon is totally fine, I talk to my (totally liberal, university educated) friends who aren't in fandom, and they say things like, "Wow, that's so weird and disturbing." Or "I don't think I'd even be able to stick around if people were ok with stuff like that." Or "Wait, you don't mean they're writing all this horrible stuff between the leads?"

I'm not sure if you have non-fandom friends you feel comfortable sharing your fannishness with, but if you do, I highly recommend getting their opinion on this. I really helps whenever I need confirmation that a lot of fandom is in fact confused and a bit gross about this issue. :)

When people stopped "Your kink is not my kink, and that's okay" and started "You terrible, horrible, person! If you don't only fantasize about kittens and rainbows you should kill yourself!"

You know who I've discussed what I write about with? My licensed therapist. I use it as a tool to deal with past trauma (which does include being raped and suffering sexual abuse as a child). Some people journal, some people keep a diary, I deal with things through writing fiction.

I'm going to take my therapist's opinion over your "educated, non-fandom" friends any day of the week.

The point is that nobody is getting off to pedophilic/peophilia in the first place. Why is this a conversation you're having?

How about don't compare pedophilia with hebephilia-or-insert-word-for-describing-teens for starters? It's clearly all the same to you. Bye Felicia.

Re: You're not special OP

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I can't tell who you're responding to, but I'm honestly not sure anyone in this thread has suggested hebephilia and pedophilia are the same. The OP did, but I'm not sure the OP even came out for this one. *shrugs*

As for whether anyone is getting off to pedophilic fanworks (as opposed to hebephilic and/or ephebophilic fanworks), I would say very few people are, but I've seen a few.

Re: You're not special OP

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Would their potential ability to get off on hebephilic fantasies have magically gone away if they hadn't read the story, then? Seems to me that the actual problem was there all along, and may still have surfaced even with absolutely no media that catered to it
