Probably a troll, but you do realize most of the discussion is between people capable of understanding that fiction is a different thing from reality, right?

Like saying you can handle movies where tons of humans get killed, but if a dog gets killed you break down in tears and discussing the differences between the two is not the same as being a murderer or pro-murder or a murder-apologizer or whatever the current favorite term is. We're also capable of discussing the ways fiction might portray an event such as the thematic differences between Scar's death and Mufasa's death and why they evoke entirely different emotions in the viewer even though they're both fictional murders.

Is the "stop sexualizing teenagers" line specifically in reference to shipping adults and teenagers, or condemning portraying relationships between two fifteen year olds who have sex? because I can understand objecting to the first, but the latter is way pearl clutchy.

Ultimately though, you can't control what other people do and you're going to have a miserable time in fandom if you wait for everyone to abide by your standards rather than just blocking and blacklisting content you don't like.

I dunno if you remember being a teenager, but I sure do. And I was fucking at age 15. Teenagers are sexual beings, it's just how it is, they're coming into their sexuality.

I personally don't have any ships with legal adults and teenagers, but I do remember being with my husband once he was 18 and I was still underage. But seeing as adults don't really mature fully until they're like 25, it's not really a big deal? I remember being 21 and still being an immature shit.

Fantasies are vastly different from reality and to claim that anyone fantasizing about some dark situation should be worried that they're a danger is 90% horseshit and for the 10% there's another problem.

Fantasies are a situation where you have control. You can stop the situation and tailor it to one particular thing. So if someone fantasizes about non-con scenarios to flick their bean, they're not anymore likely than someone who doesn't to actually rape anyone.

For a lot of people, most people in fact, the idea of their darkfics being reality would be a nightmare come true. Because in reality you can't stop and pause things or delete the fic when you don't like it anymore. You can't easily flip to a fluffy lighthearted situation. Most people who have dark fantasies are no more dangerous than the people who don't.

It's pretty sad I have to explain this in fucking 2017, but here.

I partially agree with you and partially don't, OP.

I don't agree that age is irrelevant, if that's what you're arguing. I'm honestly pretty ok with enjoying smutty scenes about a 17 yo and, say, a 25 yo, presuming the 25 yo isn't using their age, knowledge, and relative power to pressure or coerce the 17 yo.

And I can respect that not everyone's "line" on this is the same. IIRC, in the UK age of consent is 16? To me that's a bit young, but I wouldn't expect a person from the UK to just automatically think 16 was wrong, even though their legal system says it's fine.

OTOH, up until 2008 the age of consent in Canada was 14! (I'm a bit disgusted with my country rn, and I usually feel pretty good about Canada). That, to me, seems way too young and IMO other Canadians ought to feel the same even though up until 2008 the law said it was ok. Point being: I don't think we can reasonably say "younger than this is too young, and older than that is old enough, period." It's more complex than that.

However, I do agree more generally that there are a lot of people in fandom rn who want everyone to be totally fine with their hebephilic fantasies, and that's messed up. Like no, I'm not okay with your hebephilic fantasies, I'd feel bad about it if I were ok with them, and I'd rather not associate with you in fandom. I'm not going to try to doxx you or spam you over and over with messages telling you to kill yourself. That's fucked up and wrong. I just don't want to associate with you, and if there were an "unlike" button for your fanfic, I'd push it.

You know I kind of wonder if the people here who keep arguing that it's not ok are less about fiction = reality and more that they just lack imagination?

Like if I were to write Shiro and Keith I'd be shipping them based on their close bond, mutual respect, and yes their personal insecurities, and I'd be writing a universe where both characters are capable of informed consent and having a healthy relationship.

Same as if I wrote Shiro with a random alien OC I'd write the alien with human intelligence and being capable of consent and having a romantic relationship with a human.

They're not just An Adult and A Teenager, they're two fictional characters with a list of fictional capabilities, such as flying giant robotic lions and saving the universe, and with the way they're written the crew could have said they're all in their 20s and I wouldn't have blinked, they're all pretty generic action protags. Fiction is always full of characters doing things that aren't appropriate like 14 year olds running away from home, making deals with evil witches, and marrying dudes they've never actually had a conversation with.

It's kind of weird that people hardcore go after a weird little niche like fanfic for their purity crusades when there's so much more Problematic Content out there. Which is why I find it less that they're truly believing that people who ship Shiro and Keith are pedo because Keith's Underage, but shipping Keith with Lance is A++ and not Underage anymore, and more that it's just the same ol' ship wars and fandom dramaz, with a shiny new cover.

Fandom is going through a moral panic right now. And just like the moral panic of the eighties its caused innocent people to get accused , chased off, or even killed by being bullied to suicide. I only hope that it will end soon and hopefully fandom will learn from it.
