You can't "lose" shipping, OP. No one is ever obligated to like or appreciate a ship, regardless if it is canon. Fandom is always going to be about expressing opinions, and that's okay. Rejecting that is also toxic.

I agree in a larger sense that there's no winning in shipping. However, I have also encountered fans who are so insistent that their ships be canon that they've set up a win/loss scenario for themselves. In that case, they did lose by their own rules.

I don’t have issues with people not liking the ship - only people attacking, generalizing, and harassing shippers. And that happens a lot.

Pretty much this. Besides very few people would ever take such advice. If they did, we wouldn’t have shipping wars/discourse/slap fights decades later!

Also, if it’s a particularly hated ship, of course it being canon or acknowledged or whatever would just increase the discourse. Lots of people’s responses to shit they hate is to scream louder, not quieter.

The general public? That's quite a claim. I doubt the average viewer gets into all of this subtext and innuendo, let alone come to some conclusion. I didn't see anything shippy about Kylo Ren and Rey. Kylo is trying to get the power of the Jedi on his side, that's why he's appealing to Rey. I don't see why it has to be any physical or romantic attraction.

Ship whomever you want. Don't get attached to it, because to the Dark Side this path goes.

Okay but you do realize that just because 'creators acknowledge it' doesn't mean that it's canon. I'm having issues in my fandom over people harassing others over a ship, and they think that just because one of the writers is encouraging the ship that it's OMG SO CANON when the actual canon doesn't go that way. If it didn't happen in the movie/game then guess what? It's not canon.

Assuming this is actually about Reylo:

1) Reylo is not canon.

2) It's okay to ship Reylo.

3) It's also okay to criticize Reylo.

4) It's not okay to bully people for having different views.

5) "Discourse" in fandom is usually shorthand for "I have a very poor understanding of sociology and intersectionality but I think my passing knowledge of both makes me an expert and also I really like the illusion of feeling like I'm Doing Something, it gives me a nice comforting rush of endorphins, and I don't have to actually risk anything since I'm only attacking easy targets rather than the people responsible for the actual shit the world is in (they would meaningfully retaliate and I can't have that, oh no, I don't want to truly have to put up a fight or sacrifice anything for my ideals)"

6) Star Wars fandom is such a fucking shitshow that a good portion of my dash has declared that they're no longer going to discuss 'The Last Jedi' at all. Which just goes to show that in several decades nothing has changed, people are still people, and people are ridiculous.

If this is about Star Wars, it's confirmed my opinion that Reylo fans are some of the most annoying on the internet. I find it odd that Reylo fans always talk about how 'annoying' and toxic the anti-Reylo's are, when all I have ever seen are Reylo fans being utterly irritating and filling up every comments section on every major platform (ie youtube) with their Reylo stuff. For the record, I'm not anti-Reylo, or at least wasn't until stuff like this constantly came up. Sigh...

The Reylo aspect is far down on the list of things that didn't work for me in the movie.

I have no intention of making fandom toxic by attacking anyone or anything, but I will 'speak with my wallet' in future and not bother to pay to see future installments of the franchise.
