171. I - what? I've read a LOT of Profit fic, and I've never run across anyone writing Profit/Gail non-con. Much less writing it badly. Or having Profit resemble Lucius Malfoy. But your theory is sound: Jim is screwed up, Gail is his protege, and there needs to be more good Profitfic.

171 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen a lot of it, but possibly this is a difference in where people draw the line between non-con and dub-con or BDSM, which seems to differ. I can only think of a fic as BDSM if the people in it actually like each other.

A lot of people who write JP/GK seem think he is her Dom and call it BDSM, but then they make her so unhappy and humiliated during the sex with him that it might as well be creepy non-con to my thinking. I remember reading one specific fic which was written by someone that I knew wrote a whole lot of this same kind of "BDSM" in the HP fandom, and thinking "Didn't she wrote this same fic about Malfoy?" (To be fair, it was the sex scene rather than the plot that made me think this, but it was a pretty plotless fic.)

And no...it was not [livejournal.com profile] ataniell93. Her (adult) Lucius was a big frilly uke that is pining away because Tom Riddle forgot how to love him (which wasn't uncanonical in 2002-2005 when she was writing it). I don't recall ever reading her Lucius top anyone unless you count topping from the bottom. (Except James Potter, but that was because he looked kind of like Tom Riddle.) The only similarity between her Profit and her Lucius is that they both like money and they're both kinda gay.

...because deep down, everyone wants to be an English voice actor for anime, but alas, even among their own peers, there are more who are quick to condemn than support the industry they wish to someday be part of.

Replace 'English voice actor' with 'Western manga artist' and well, you get about the same results as OEL.

My two cents on this anyway.

[identity profile] arwydd.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
118 - Dude, that looks awesome. Lesse... Ed, Edd (looking particularly fine!), and Eddy. Bubbles, Blossom, Dexter... okay, that's all I know. XD

122 - They. Are. So. Adorable!

163 - I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN AND IT'S WHY I HIGH-TAILED IT OUTTA THERE D:

[identity profile] icefalcon.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
154 - Yeah, I totally would have married Jafar, and we would have taken over the world together. It would have been great.

173 - Fuck off, I'm not European and I'm well aware of what happened in WWII.

People don't compare Hitler and Light for reasons of policy. They are compared on other grounds - like their callous disregard of human life, for their belief that they are fit judges for the fate of other human beings, for their meglomania, for the cult-like adoration they garnered, etc.

I think that Light can be compared to any despot, it's just that most people are familiar with the horrible scale of the atrocities under Hitler and the Nazi regime. For the record, I dislike the comparison because I think it trivialises the real atrocities, but I see why people can make the comparison.

141. Same here. Usagi is my role model.

Of course, when I think about a human manifestation of a higher power, I either think of Usagi or of Alanis Morissette as God from Dogma. :D

174. Using my colorized icon just for you. <3 Seriously, as long as they aren't actually editing the pictures (why hallo thar, Sailor Moon otaku-senshi fandom!), I don't see a problem.

155, 162

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
155. Now I can't unsee it either, but I'm not sure I want to. You just made my day.

162. I don't know anyone else who has seen it. I caught it entirely by accident at some ungodly hour of the morning and, until I saw it for sale in a bargain DVD bin, I thought I'd imagined the whole movie. I'm glad I was wrong!

173, 179

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
173. Actually, no, I have seen very few people compare Light to Hitler. I have, however, seen many people compare Light's methodology to that of Fascism, as well as other kinds of absolute authoritarianism. Also, if you DON'T see the parallels between Light and many dictators throughout history (including Hitlet), not necessarily in terms of ideology, but in terms of METHODOLOGY (the ends justify the means) and PERSONALITY (eccentric, alienated, paranoid, delusions of grandeur), then you lack a great deal of perspective.

179. And I'm willing to bet that the person who posted the original secret doesn't give a shit. (And before you even start: No, I did not make that secret, but I've seen this attitude in so many fandoms it's not even funny. When will people realize that most shippers don't care what anonymous folks over the internet think of their preferences?)

[identity profile] friendshipbeam.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
130) I miss CLAMP Campus Detectives. Ouran was funny, but the beach episode left me creeped out by the moral implications.

165. Yes, and?

179. I pretend everyone who writes sibling incest fic doesn't actually have siblings. It's the only way I can sleep at night. If I actually think about it (and what fandom would assume from pictures from my childhood), I'll never stop shuddering.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
I read incest fic and have siblings. The thing is, I don't have sexual feelings towards my siblings. In fact, it's not the fact that two characters are siblings that makes me want to ship it, but the closeness of the relationship, which (IN FANDOM) is a turn-on for me. I don't ship real people, because that squicks me out.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Sachiko, I think, would either have to be Bill O'Reilly or Conan O'Brian.

'Course, I don't know Conan so that's just a guess, and if Bill were to be Sachiko, Stephen would probably have to be Yumi rather than Touko (then again... maybe not).

A more sensible (for a given definition of 'sensible') distribution of roles would be to make Stewart Sachiko and Stephen Yumi. Jimmy could then be Touko, I think. Or maybe John Oliver, I dunno.

However, the really important question is who would take the role of Sei.

110. IAWTC AND FUCKING SIGNED. Ilu OP. ♥

111. ♥ Haha, for the most part, from what I've seen, Reborn RPers are full of WEIRDNESS AND LOVE. We're happy to have you. :>

120. ... Just that picture sort of makes me cry. Lots. And lots. ):

127. It's not racist, but it... is kind of retarded when one of your complaints is "no noses" and I see SEVERAL obvious noses in the pictures you chose. And a few examples of not big eyes. Wtf? XD;

Also, I'm sorry, but if you're seriously saying that this (http://home.arcor.de/minako.aino/sailor-moon/usagi-smile.gif) looks exactly like this (http://www.cyberpunkreview.com/images/lain5.jpg), I figure you're just looking for a reason to complain and dislike it. (Or this (http://yourownalbum.net/images/ueki1.jpg) and this (http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e217/ruthliskutin/GitS-SAC-major20batou20togusa.jpg), wtf hello worlds of difference.) (Also am I the only one unhappy with the Major's lips in that shot? XD)

If you're saying all shoujo looks alike... yeah, okay, there are a lot of similarities there. A lot of it does look very, very, very, very similar, I'll give you that. And all chibis kinda look similar. Buuuut that's about the limit of it, sorry.

130. .......... I think I may agree with the first part of your secret. Y halo thar School Detectives. ♥♥

140. I really, really need to give in and just buy that book. *A*

143. I was kind of weirded out by her eyes at first, but now I think they're strangely really pretty. Then again, I love odd character designs, so. XD

159. Monster is amazing, YES. ♥ And I like it more than Death Note, definitely. But it's... not really the same series, and it shouldn't be. Plus, I'm a little bit- or actually a lot- "wtf" over your use of the term "real" manga. I'm sorry, but no matter how much you like those three better, Death Note is still a real manga. :/

162. OH MY GOD I LOVE THAT MOVIE

AND THAT BOOK

JKDGSGSDHJGFASFHJA I haven't read/watched in a long while, though. I KNOW WHAT I MUST DO. XD

165. Kimba I can see, Nadia I don't know, I don't think anyone including Disney is denying Beauty and the Beast, I can get behind your top example as to Milo and them but your second one is sort of reaching. I don't know who you know, but Disney is not epically original, or wasn't for a long time (some of their stuff is more than others, like Emperor's New Groove and Lilo & Stitch). Almost ALL of Disney's original movies were based on fairy tales, for God's sake, who out there is insisting that everything Disney's done is totally original? It's not bad if they aren't, sheesh.

169. Since they are REALLY, REALLY GOOD. XD I don't know that one, but man, if I find a good writer, whether of original things or fanfiction, I get chills and thrills and love them forever. ♥ Don't be ashamed!

173. I sorta agree with this! I can get comparing Light's methods/beliefs loosely to Hitler's, though. In the end, he was trying to make a new world order, with himself in charge, based on killing those he decided deserved to die. Light wasn't totally killing people for the lulz, though he was way closer to doing so than Hitler; alternatively, Light was at least making an effort, if a very very vague one, to kill off "criminals" (and those who wanted to bring him down, but um, with his personality, duh XD), whereas Hitler was committing genocide for much less logical (to us) reasons.

Totally seconding your footnote, though. Dayam. ;;

174. Wow. This seems pretty dumb. Um, don't use colorized icons, then? We'll just realize that the manga has a canonical color scheme and that the reason it's in black and white is that it would take too much time and money to do it in color, therefore, us having manga icons in color is just for the sake of, oh, having pretty icons. Which is why most of us have icons. XD;

179. Oh noes! Someone is tainting the pure love of fictional characters! Such horrible people they are! Wtf, let them do what they like and ignore them. Doesn't make them a "bad fan," just means they enjoy something you don't.

180. This seems like a repeat. And, same as last time, I get annoyed when people complain about ALL ENGLISH DUBS when they're obviously just spouting off elitist crap and not giving any good reasons. Saying they prefer the Japanese, or talking about specific English dubs, or attempting to make a good argument, is a lot easier to swallow. ♥

181. In after tons of people expressing total disbelief that you would call this a good book, no doubt.

182. You have a good imagination, and that is awesome. =D ♥

185. This has nothing to do with anything, but man pretty lady is pretty. *^*

repeat #2: Haven't I seen this secret around a lot? XD

120

[identity profile] patientalien.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, for some reason. There aren't many in my fandom, but I tend to write them.

Why?

157

[identity profile] dream-inspired.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to like Ten, I really did. I wanted to give him a chance. I never got over it, and I am forever resentful towards Ten. Nine is MY proper Doctor.

181

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ok... I offer this comment in all seriousness and spirit of non-bashing.

But, if you are so frustrated with Twilight fandom, why not get a real vampire novel? There are plenty out there that are a lot better than Twilight, really. I have read them, and I have read Twilight. If you do this, and get into fandom for one of those books, then none of your preppy friends will be there to ruin it for you, and you can feel better than them.

Seriously!

[identity profile] dracothelizard.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
102: If you know what happens already, and you've read everything else, you can probably handle the Red Wedding, but it's obviously best to read if you have no idea what happens so you can OMGWTF NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO when you find out.

158: That's like hanging around in the Hercules or Xena fandom expecting people to care about actual historic facts, since those two shows are all about the fun and the crack!

165: Because sometimes the Disney film is based on a TROPE rather than a specific example.

173: Yeah, everyone always leaves out the Canadians and the other allied troops :(

162

[identity profile] cinnamon-sakaki.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 07:14 am (UTC)(link)

140. HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT I HATED THAT PART THE POOR DOG. D:

171. This fandom!secrets post is fantastic. of Leaves and Profit in the same post. I'm dying here. I mean, I don't actively participate in the Profit fandom, so I have not the slightest idea what writer you're talking about, but STILL.
