Oh, and by the way, 165...

Atlantis: The Lost Emperor has Jim Varney and a badass dogfight at the end. Does Nadia have either of those? No? Then it can fuck right off.

Disney has never been totally original, but at least they know how to turn shitty premises into something worth watching. Yeah, you heard me.

Re: Oh, and by the way, 165...

[identity profile] loona.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I actually really enjoyed many aspects of Nadia. While it did get inane and weird at times, I really loved the philosophies that the director set up and later explored in Eva. Excluding the movie. I try to pretend that didn't happen.

[identity profile] inquisitory.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
139. ooh now that I think about it, you're right :x As sweet as they would be together, Takemoto totally deserves someone who would be more faithful to him. Hagu seems rather fickle from how the manga ended, anyway xD;

140. ... I read the book and I don't remember that part at all :x I think that makes me a bad fan ahaha!

139

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...fickle? How? For deciding to stay with the person who is able to support her when she clearly needs support and the person she has feelings for (btw, never said she loved him) can't support her? Not to mention that IMO she made it pretty clear that she knew about Hanamoto's feelings but she didn't feel the same way about him.

115 - I didn't cry like a baby but I certainly, ahem, had something in my eye.

127 - I'm not saying you're racist. Just snobbish. You may want to step away from the generic mainstream anime/manga and y'know, realize that it's not a goddamn style. They don't all look the same. Not all anime has big eyes/lotsa hair/slender bodies/etc., (Just take a look at, say, Kemonozume) and this goes double for manga which is much more versatile in style than manga.

130 - "CLAMP was the original Ouran"? Way to misunderstand the whole point of the show... (y'know, parody of shoujo romance manga clichés and all that? CLAMP included.)

139 - Of course the drama changed so many things about the original setting that the characters are not really the same as in the anime/manga...

159 - Yes, dammit.

130

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't agree with the OP, but I rather think Ouran is failing in the parody department not that half the characters are in love with Haruhi and she is falling for Tamaki. And it started out so great, too...

If you wanted discussions about Greek mythology, you probably shouldn't have joined the fandom for a movie that call all the gods by their Greek names, but their main character by his roman one.

Hercules = Son of Jupiter
Heracles = Son of Zeus
Neither are Hera's son. She spent his entire life trying to kill him for being one of Zeus' bastards.

165. I agree that Disney doesn't come up with original stories, but...you've got the wrong ripoffs. Beauty and the Beast is based on a story that's been around for God knows how long, probably several hundred years. Oh, and The Lion King was inspired by Hamlet, by the by. Anyone will tell you that. It's true that Kimba was similar, but dija ever think that they were both ripped off of something older? Which is the case for most children's movies. It's a popular thing to do, taking a story from the past and modernizing it for a new generation. 10 Things I Hate About You, "O", the Lion King...it's a way to teach kids older stories in a fresh new way. Duh.

Seriously, kid. Get over yourself.

"But whoever the author of Monster is makes his people fugly."

I don't know what Akagi is, so I can't comment on that one, but I guarantee that those are some of the protests you'd be likely to receive. (Especially about Monster. Do you know how many people have called the artwork ugly? Ohgod.)

Yeah, okay. No nose. (http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/3927/mgimmerbu5.jpg)

A lot of mainstream stuff may have similar styles, but people like you seem to be trying hard to ignore the variety of styles classified under "anime" (or manga).

I don't think that Western cartoons are inferior, or anime is superior (okay, that's sort of a lie, SO MANY WESTERN CARTOONS SUCK NOW. What happened to the good shows from the 90s?), I think you like what you like. Every country has awesome things coming from it. But don't give up on a huge swath of animation because you can't (or maybe just haven't had the chance to) look beyond what's incredibly popular.

139. TAKEMOTOOOOO~♥

159. URASAWA IS A GOD. Let's talk. Please. PLEASE. I would love to have a nice chat about any of those series. I think that some of his series take a little while to get into, so people give up on them. Plus the art style isn't exactly typical of something someone would just pick up. It's quite a shame really... I mean, Urasawa is the only person who has made me cry for an expressionless mass-produced robot. T^T

165. I actually read an interesting article about Nadia and Atlantis being similar. A lot of it was marked up to original illustrations (ships, etc) of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and the basis of that story. However, that says nothing about the character designs (I adore both of them though). And Lion King = Hamlet + Kimba most definitely, and it's my favorite Disney movie. I hear Lilo and Stitch has a lot of anime influence (I guess there is a café that is a reference to Kiki's Delivery Service?), but I haven't checked it out.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-23 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
