132. Oh, Simon. Yeah, he's adorable, but I'm not sure if I'd hit it. Actually, I'd just want him to ask me pop quiz-related questions. And maybe tell me awful stories about Mark Lamarr.

162. Dark City! Saw it opening day in theaters, and it was the first DVD I ever bought. That's a perfect movie right there, and it's got an awesome "from-and-inspired-by" soundtrack too. Funny enough, I don't ever want to see the director's cut, because I know it will suck compared to the original.

One of my friends says the Director's Cut is good but really disturbing. And they cut that awful opening narration!

[identity profile] levikitty.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
165. No story is completely original. Everyone draws inspiration from something. I'm really sick of people bringing this up. Especially the Kimba people who think they're SOOOOO much better because of it. YES, KIMBA CAME FIRST. LION KING DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM IT. WE KNOW. THE REASON PEOPLE GET PISSED OFF WHEN PEOPLE BRING IT UP IS BECAUSE THEY BRING IT UP ALL THE TIME AND NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT IT.

I love the show, and Greek mythology! As someone else pointed out, yeah Disney may mess around with the myths to make them more child-friendly, but they also have a lot of little nods to the original stories.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
127- Because not all anime/manga look like that? The amjority does, but the second you say "All" yeah people are gonna jump on you (And yeah, the same damn thing is true with western comics, as Maus=/=Runaways art)

165- Yeah, you ttly have a point with Lion kind, but I'd like to point out the other two? Are stories pulling from the same basic history/ideas/story to make their own version. Alantis being crystal oriented is part of ATLANTIS legend that all three pulled from.

172- But...Anko is...ugh?

173- I think you miss the point of why people compare the two.

174- I don't mind the concept when done well, but most are flat and ugly.

124: I find that completely understandable. I haven't seen that movie since I was like, ten, but I definitely had a crush on him then.

132: OH MY GOD, ME TOO. I'm utterly in denial about his sexuality. I just feel like my whole world would end if I accepted the fact that he's gay.

155: I lol'd. Hard. And felt REALLY bad for doing so.

157: Are...are you me? I don't think I've been drinking this week, but did I get drunk and post this? Feel free to friend me, because...yes. I still love both of them equally! I hate the pressure to pick one over the other!

173: I've never seen the series, but is that really what people think about Hitler? Holy shit. He did it because he truly believed that "Aryan" people literally had superior blood. It wasn't "for the lulz." Jesus. I hate America sometimes.

[identity profile] tulleskirt.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't agree with the comparison, but people have legitimate rationale for comparing the two. And I've seen a lot of non-Americans do it.

22. I like Skandar/Anna too, I also like Georgie/Skandar too....though I'd rather have Skandar for myself. lol

24. I love Gene Wilder!Wonka. I crush on him too.

65. Beauty and the Beast was not ripped off the novel Beauty. it ripped off the fairy tale with has been for hundreds of years.

and about the Kimba and Lion King thing. not ripped off. the Lion King is ripped off from Hamlet. Kimba and Simba are similar names, but Simba was named that because in Swahili it means Lion.

so Disney can rip off, but mostly on the original sourcework of the classic stories and archtypes.

81. why don't you join the Jacob/Bella communities on LJ? there will be people who share your same ideas and ships.

150: Woah.. Ok, that's just awesome. ^_^

155: And now I can't unsee it, either. AH!

165: ?? Who claims Beauty and the Beast is a Disney original? Of course it's not!

Hey, I was in that fandom waaay back in the day, I'm amazed it's still around. It's interesting that not many members of the fanbase know much about Greek mythology, though, since the people I was nerding around with for a few years in there knew quite a lot, including me. Heck, I got interested in the movie and the show because I grew up reading the Greek myths and loved them to pieces.

Now I'm feeling nostalgic...

180. I get angry when complaints are unwarranted. SRSLY. They aren't all bad. Some actually turn out to rival the original versions. Plus if you don't like it that much, the simple solution would be to stop watching it.

yeah, plus a few of them don't even know what they're talking about. for instance, i've had people complaining to me about the dub to elfen lied (not that it isn't terrible, but anyways) but even the japanese version was criticized on its crappy acting. just because it's ~*~*JAPAN*~*~ doesn't mean it's crammed with amazing actors and ONLY amazing actors

I loved this movie. No matter how awesome the Matrix was, Dark city was there first, and may very well have more staying power in the long run.

I even wrote fanfiction. (It's horrible, even worse than my Matrix Fanfiction - and no, I won't let anyone see it.)

"Look at what the X-Men have become?"

Alright, 183, I'm not entirely certain what you mean by this in reference to that particular title and that particular variant cover (because, honestly, X-Force is as gritty and dirty and ugly as you can get without resorting to Max: unless you're bothered by the slaughter? I dunno. The rainbows and puppy dogs variant, I thought, was a hilarious and ironic twist for the book... especially when the alternative is referred to as a "bloody variant".)

Anyway. To the point, and my apologies if I sound like an ass (but no apologies offered for my opinion on the matter) if you haven't made an effort to suss out the nuances of the characters by actually reading the books, watching the movies, renting the DVDs, whatever, you're not experiencing anything firsthand, and its likely that one day, someone will pick you off and call you out for it, because someday, you will slip and the canon nazis riot in that sort of gore, especially when you find yourself in a high profile position (in my opinion, undeservedly).

The rest of us are doing the work and doing the research because we like it. Why can't you give your dollars to a suffering industry and read the books? Or was the point of this secret a confession that you're exploiting something you know virtually nothing about to gain notoriety in a fandom you don't really care about?

Whatever, man.

*kicks soapbox out of the way*

183 op

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I do care about the fandom. I'm in the fandom, just not for this particular cast of characters. I read other Marvel titles, and I support the 'suffering' industry, I collect other series, and Marvel is probably far from 'suffering'.

I've been stalking them like crazy for a year now, but at first I didn't admit it because ah popular cosplayers bwah. Then I started watching them at dA, reading the journal entries and everything...
...but it was only a few weeks ago that I figured out Jin is a girl.
Or is she? I never saw concrete proof, so I just heavily speculate but I don't care either way, I think it's pretty amusing. I don't know why they put so much effort into hiding it but it's their decision :D
So don't be ashamed, I don't know how old this is supposed to be :D

Sad thing is that even after figuring out the "truth", I still have a crush on Jin. Or what. :D

But, yeah, if you choose to believe the twins thing, fraternal twins =/= identical, really. And she's written about her cosplay experiences and has had, shall I say, a "cosplay experience interview" where she IS referred to as a girl so... I'm pretty convinced. XD Also, many of her schoolmates have already spilled the beans about the whole thing, too.

118. I have no idea what that is, but it totally justifies the crush I had on Edd when I was in middle school. :O

165. Haha, why yes, a retelling of Beauty and the Beast IS in fact a retelling of Beauty and the Beast! How clever of you!

That game is not needed to justify any crush that anyone may hypothetically have had or still sorta has on Edd. >_>

107. Good god, so much word. I don't even follow Doctor Who and I still think the 'lol here have an alternate me' is a crappy copout.

110. I googled it, and I did not regret. In fact, I agree very much with you, OP. Required reading indeed. Even though people may take different things from it than you did, I still think it should be required reading.

155. ... But. But. No. That is not right.

162. Oh man, Dark City. Matrix before the Matrix was real. That movie was such a mindscrew. I want to say that 'you are not alone', but I don't htink I qualify as a fan since I saw the Matrix first, and then just accidentally stumbled onto this movie on latenight television.

147. I have not seen that movie, but Tom Selleck in an adventure flick? I'm so there! Mmm. Tomm Selleck.

162. Dark City is fucking awesome, okay.

166. O Hyadain ♥

173. [tl;dr politics but this American agrees with your smalltext]

174. Yes we wouldn't want to ruin the purity of the artform that is weekly shonen manga. Or whatever.

141- Oh goodness, that is so absolutely PERFECT.

143- Her eyes creep me out, too, but I actually really warmed to her over the show and after a while, I stopped noticing them. But I can see where you're coming from, they're creepy.
