Oh Jesus it's going to suck.

At least I've pretty effectively filtered that kinda wank from my feeds. So that's good.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-24 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
What does compulsory heterosexuality mean?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Generally it’s the idea that some gay women will initially be in relationships with men before coming to terms with their sexuality, not because they are attracted to them, but because society puts so much emphasis on women’s relationships with men, so they have internalized that pressure.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
And people generalize it to the way that certain characters are presented in fiction as well, I think.

I don't know what parts of the internet you frequent, but what I see now is just a consensus that it's just a different in preferred terms. No one really says bi is just restricted to being attracted to cis people.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've never seen that either.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I see people talking about the idea to reject it but I'm not sure whether or not they're actually responding to people who exist or just speaking in general.

[personal profile] digitalghosts 2018-09-25 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I did see that unfortunately :P but usually in a form of bisexuality as being attracted to two binary genders vs. pansexuality being ... anything else. The case is - pansexuality is newer as a term and even if we had strict and clear definitions for each: people who used other beforehand will not all stop. I seen precisely same thing with whole transsexual vs. transgender.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-25 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen a couple pan and bi people talk about it because I wanted to know more and one pansexual person said they were attracted to people regardless of gender, while the bisexual person is attracted to all genders (trans and nonbinary people included ofc). Ofc a lot of people use the terms interchangeably but I think that was an explanation that was easy to remember.

I am so sick of the obsessive need to fight to the death over labels.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish people would grasp that like... A label is ultimately just a conventional abstraction over a reality that's always going to be more complex and specific and multifaceted. A useful abstraction, an important abstraction, a meaningful abstraction. But ultimately just a word.

I don't understand this. I am technically pansexual but I hate being labelled. I am a person and I love other people, regardless of what they have between their legs. I think all of these labels smack of special snowflake syndrome and are actually harmful to the LGBTQ community. The majority of people are surely sick to death of hearing about all of these labels and so-called genders and I am one of them.

Only slightly related but thanks for alerting me to this movies existence - I’ve been reading about some of her contemporaries recently (Natalie Barney and the like) and so this seems just right for my current interests!

(Anonymous) 2018-09-25 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
What I hate is that there will be a push that she was trans. Because we can't have smart women who push the boundaries that society places upon them and have them still be cis.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe we can just accept that "trans" and "cis" are modern categories and we can't know how people from the past would have fit themselves into them? And live with the ambiguity, and let people see them as either without letting that exclude the other possibility?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Omg when will this trans nonsense stop?! Women in the past who were lesbians would pretend to be men in public so they could openly date other women! jfc!! Why do people hate lesbians so much?

It's also completely ignoring the larger societal context in that there were a great many things that women were Not Allowed to do in the past under the societal and cultural standards of the time. Claiming to be a man was one way for women to get around those taboos and do what they wanted to do, be it dating other women, holding jobs that weren't considered to be appropriate for women, etc.

anyone who says you have to ID as pan to date a trans person is just an average transphobe dressed up in tumblr language

(Anonymous) 2018-09-25 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
As an old bi, I'm just using this anon to state my annoyance with pan as a thing. It's young people crap. Bi already existed. We didn't need a new word to say the same thing and confuse everyone. There's nothing that pan does that bi didn't already do. Bi is not transphobic.

Would I say this un-anon? Only if I felt like dealing with people's crap.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-25 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Bi isn't inherently so, but it's gotten co-opted by TERFs, unfortunately. Hence why Pan exists--so that people uncomfortable with the idea they might get associated with TERFs for whatever reason (including they themselves are trans) can have a word they're comfortable with.

Pan isn't the only term. There's Polysexual, Omnisexual, queer, with multisexual and m-spec being used as umbrella terms. The way bi activists are phrasing it right now are Pan = all genders and attraction regardless of gender, Bi = two or more, Same and different, or more than one gender.* (Due to trying to find a way to include Non-binary people without being dismissive of their gender) Polysexual, styled PLY usually is defined as "attraction to some, but not all genders." Queer can mean a variety of things, though a lot of bisexuals are also calling themselves queer now.

All of these precede tumblr, fyi. My friend ID as Pansexual over a decade before tumblr even was thought of, and there was a longstanding LJ community about it. I find the differences handy, because there is a lot of overlap in the BI+ community. My best friend never felt like Bi fit him, but when he learned Pan, he felt that really summed up how he felt in a way. I, who have a massive female and non-binary preference, prefer bisexual because Pan implies I'd like dudes the same.
