I found it boring too, and yeah, a lot of the popularity came because it was a film about a gay relationship. But if it had been a heterosexual relationship, there wouldn't have been a story at all. The whole point was that it was a homosexual relationship between these two men in that time period, and how they dealt (or didn't) deal with that. That story itself was important as a film, important as a film that gained as much popularity and acclaim as it did, regardless of whether it was boring or not.

I'm not so sure about that, although I'm not really IN the fandom. I've read a huge crapload of fic, however, and he's a hero to a lot of the fangirls.

That's mainly Pit fic though and most of the fics I've read where he's prominently featured are fics involving him and Haruhi. I don't pay much attention to actual discussion, so it could be that he's hated, but I haven't seen it anywhere that I can think of. If you're finding that he is, it's quite possible that you're running into rabid Tamaki/Haruhi shippers or something.

No, you made perfect sense. I mean more in the sense that he is grossly misunderstood. Or maybe I'm just being too critical. I just feel that the fanfics that feature him tend to be very poor characterizations, making him look far worse than he is, or making him look too nice and not crediting his motives well.
