I'm more willing to forgive Elle because it seems really clear from the show that we're supposed to see Noah as in the right in the way he treats her, and Elle's just a bitch who deserves it (not her history, but the way everyone else treats her about it). Their scene in "Untold Stories" drove me insane, because it was like the writers went out of their way to not allow her any agency. And there's no way for her to act against it, because from the way the show puts it, Noah's right, so she'd be wrong. Not letting men treat her like crap would be not going along with her "redemption" arc.

And part of the reason I think this is what we're supposed to be getting from the show is that you're the only other person I've seen complaining about this. I'm hoping against hope that it won't be like that in s3, no matter how it looks, but... well, the spoilers having my brain hurting for about a hundred different reasons.

Yes, the show seems to sell this as The Way It Should Be, and this really worries me. What worries me even more is that most fans seem to buy into it, too.
Like you said... no one is complaining, even though they are usually so quick to go on feministic rants about how women are treated on the show.
But Elle's example is worse than, say, Maya's, because the way Sylar treated Maya was clearly shown to be a bad thing. While Bennet's treatment of Elle is downright glorified.

105. Try the original novel and the manga adaptation of Trinity Blood. They are far superior, IMO.

163. You misunderstood Tolkien's themes against war plus Eowyn's characterization. It was never about "kickass by the sword" as the Peter Jackson's version appears to have but an unhealthy obsession with a "glorious" end of her life. All characters gave up the sword once there was peace because Tolkien gave more importance to nature and prosperity (hence Sam getting the happy ending Frodo didn't), Faramir was a healing influence in a typical feminine role for Eowyn (who had a more masculine role) to settle down and avoid a tragic end.

Simple solution: stick to gen. Or skip the smut scenes. No one's forcing you to read sex! I don't like incest, so I don't read fics that feature it. It's not rocket science.

108. I don't read smut fics usually because its not really my cup of tea. I like my reading to have plot, which a lot of sex fics (that I've skimmed) don't seem to have. But I have to disagree with the no talent required part. Creativity is needed to imagine the sex, you are writing down what you come up with in your head, not what is right in front of you. Even if you have had sex, you have to have the creativity to take that experience and put it down in writing in a way that others will want to read. All writing takes creativity I think. Also, a good fic and all good writing required talent, its not something just anyone can do.

105 Why is it that people who aren't into anime always pic the most "OMG ANIME" type of anime to like as their "one anime"?? I had this friend who was super into Blood+ for some random reason, even though she never watched anime at all, and this was about a year before it was licensed, so she had to go out of her way to find fansubs of it. There are plenty of anime with more down-to-earth premises, or more Western themes, plotlines, and structures, but not-anime people always go with the series that just reek of a stereotype.
108 I guess it's prevalent because nobody wants to write fanfiction unless it involves relationships, or else it would be boring. What else is there to write about for most series, really? (And non-sexual romantic fanfic is just as gratitutious... so you might as well write smut).

I don't mind people not liking her from the start. What I mind is people suddenly being OMG DISAPPOINTED or OMG FULL OF HATRED because Ranka did something that was completely understandable to anyone with half a brain and an ounce of empathy, not to mention completely in-character.

By not acting their age I meant mostly Alto and Sheryl. I like Sheryl a lot, but the way she's presented she's not a convincing sixteen-year-old (or is she 17?) to me. Neither are the boys, but that's to be expected, sort of, from a mecha anime.
