You left Castlevania fandom because of the gay? What? (Have you played Curse of Darkness?!)

Not to mention that the majority of Castlevania chicks end up either getting killed or have about five seconds of screentime. (Order of Ecclesia fills my sad heart with joy, though. Portal of Ruin did it right, too.) But taking cues from the image you have up there... uhh, well, I'm not too fond of his save-me-darling girlfriend, though I guess if it's just porn Succubus would do. I don't know. Castlevania het usually just fails. You're in the wrong fandom, dude.

And FYI: Characters' sexuality is less important than their personality. If they're interesting, and another character's interesting, who cares who they've both been banging up until now?

Gay's not the only reason I left the fandom. For the most part, it was ridiculous amounts of drama. I was just mentioning that the making everyone gay thing irritates me like a few others I've seen mention it here.

133. WTF XD

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Also?

Because there are just so many canon gays for us to choose from! I can rarely ever find myself represented in the things I read or watch, and I don't want to just watch the shows that are 'aimed' at lesbians. Because, I'm not really all that into soap opera type shows. If we can't get our representation in fandom, where else are we supposed to go?

And when there are canon gay characters? Well, go to After Ellen (www.afterellen.com) and find out. ABC exec's just made Grey's Anatomy fire one of the two actresses from a storyline that *gasp* had two of the women doctors realize they were gay/bisexual. Apparently someone was uncomfortable with the 'graphicness' of the way the relationship was going. Even though on a show that has a lot of bed hopping, had one scene where they were in their nighties post sex and shared one little very chaste kiss.

Basically, yeah, we're also in it for the hot porn. But a whole load of us just want to see other types of relationships that exist actually explored.

[And yeah, I probably would've left this be if it weren't for the whole ABC thing right now, it has my panties all in a twist]

Re: 113

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
ABC's decision to fire Brooke Smith made me punch a wall in rage. Wow, apparently gays on ABC can only be the cute, harmless, hands-holding fluffy version. Any mention of, gasp, actual sexuality, and it's the axe for them!

Oh, OP. Me too, me too! I love paternal-type relationships in shows/books, especially Rube and George. So much so that I seriously get a little teary-eyed every time Rube calls George 'peanut'. Ever read the Inkworld trilogy by Cornelia Funke? I really love the relationship between Dustfinger and Farid.

123. I'm so upset that my parents both voted for this, even though I came out to them six years ago and they know I was intending to propose to my girlfriend, that I haven't even noticed whether or not anyone is fandom has supported it.

That would be very upsetting.

(Anonymous) 2008-11-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry. The one thing I can always count on is that my parents will support me in all of my decisions; I haven't even tried to imagine how I would react if they choose to shut me out in this regards.

[identity profile] lurkerbunny.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I love how most people are like "OMH BUT KODOMO NO JIKAN IS 4 PEDOS AND SOUTH PARK IS TEH SATIIIIIIIRE!". I assume these people have never even read Kodomo No Jikan or watched the series. Let me get one thing clear: it has a plot besides a precocious little girl. There are complex character relations involved. Not just between the girl and her teacher, but between the girl and her friends, the girl and her caretaker (who is the closest thing to a molester in the story), and the teacher and the other teachers. It's also a tale of growing up. And to talk about little girls growing up, sometimes you have to show things that most people don't think little girls actually do. Like talk about sex. And I don't know about you, but me and my classmates at that age? That's what we talked about. I was never in love with my teacher, but there were guys I would have "jumped", even if I didn't understand the full implications of "jumping" someone.

South Park is just a couple of Libertarians using kids as avatars to bitch about things they don't like. Oh, and let me remind you about a little boy named Cartman. A racist, unpleasant little shit. I could never understand why he's supposed to be funny. I guess because he's "satirical", and that makes it okay. He's the most popular character now... and I wonder how many of his fans even know he's supposed to be satirical. Hell, I'm beginning to wonder if he's even satirical anymore. Parker and Stone have been putting some of their views into HIM rather than Stan and Kyle (like the hippie episode, or the "take that, Family Guy" episode).

Frankly put, why is a racist anti-semite child considered funny but a precocious one isn't?

Re: 150

(Anonymous) 2008-11-09 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
No.

No. No. NO.

These girls are EIGHT. Do you know what eight year olds talk about? Who has the cutest clothes and who is the cutest boy. 'Dating' at that age is sitting next to each other in the cafeteria during lunch. Little third-grade girls get giggly about holding hands at school and how that means they'll be together forever.

They do NOT have sex.

They do NOT talk about having tight pussies.

I don't care if there's any comparison between South Park and Kodomo no Jikan. I don't watch either show, I'm not interested in it, and I know that they're not real and can be whatever they want. Fiction does not equal reality, and children can be unrealistic in it. But don't you fucking dare talk like it's normal for living eight-year-olds to be like that. Because it's not.

102. I don't think it's shameful to admit that, I actually wish it was the case for me. I mean, I was a manga/anime fan then but I wasn't a typical teenager regardless (and I lack that "invincibility feeling" too). It's better than risking getting addicted or knocked up.

104. Why do I find this picture hot?

107. The answer why society is obsessed with sex is pretty damn simple: Human are sexual beings who always been obsessed with it in some manner, whether it's prudence or promiscuousness and everything in between. But anyway, it's alright not figure it out yet, you're only 20, that's pretty damn young anyway (HURP DERP, it's not like I'm so much older, will be 25 next Sunday). It'll be clear in due time, in the meanwhile learn that sexuality doesn't have to fit in neat little boxes either.

110. Damn you for making me look at the nipples. LOL.

116. I always they made a better pairing. Damn you, Watase, damn you.

118. LOL at Twilight Hotel. Also lol wut?

121. OP, YOU ARE NOT ALONE AT ALL. I find the classic a bit boring, but some odd reason the remake clicked with me a lot more although I kinda prefer the character designs from the classics a little more. Damn, I loved 2040 and I still have the OP and ED on my iPod.

122. But, but they're so short... ;_;

123. Oh wow... that sucks.

126. Whut? Then I can say every show with a majority of the cast is white is racist too, which is like 85% of the time? While I think that flipping it around doesn't help anyone and I wish there were more shows that knows more diversity and destroy the old thinking that a show with a multi-racial cast won't fly personally.

132. God, was I kinda sad for Madarame having to keep hi crush on Saki a secret. Now I kinda want to see Nodame more.

141. LOL, okay.

150. I find that America is a lot more strict with foreign media with controversial issues than with a domestic show. Granted the whole KoJika debacle was fueled by misinformation from the opponents of the titles who never even READ the title. I'm not a fan of lolicon and read it to see what the fuck the shitstorm was all about and I found a surprisingly moving story that used the fanservice as a means of intimidation than titillation. I kinda agree the outrage was silly since South Park did worse even if it's a humorous manner. The funny part we have Negima, which the girls were pretty young and there's truckloads of fanservice, even shotacon fanservice with Negi, who's 9 at the beginning of the story. But I think it's the weird double standard that this country has with a issue like that though.

151. I don't stop reading fics because of it but fuck me, it does annoy me. I'm a stickler for people to spell the character name right, no matter what series. Although admittedly, I don't mind the whole Spanner issue since Spana sounds less uncool or something.

119. ♥

134. I agree. I love seeing more people getting into writing but I can't stand it when everyone starts in with "I'm a terrible writer because I couldn't pump out 10,000 words this month!" I'd be more concerned about the quality of the writing, not how fast you can churn it out.

139. It was just updated in May. I know the wait between Parts 25 and 26 was excrutiatingly long (nearly two years) but Jaida and Rave had, you know, lives that needed attending to (Jaida was in the process of publishing Havemercy). I think we'll see another update, especially now the Deathly Hallows has long been out and digested and there's a lot of new canon to work with.

....at least, I keep telling myself that. :)

111. Well, it is canon (in at least one storyline, anyway, I don't keep up with the overarching DC canon if there is one) that Wonder Woman and Superman get married and have a kid. Somehow, that makes this secret way, way funnier to me. XD

113. If you're seriously retarded enough to think that FS actually mirrors fandom itself, then that kind of fails. FS is 90% wank, fandoms are usually only... I'd say 10% or so? Or less? It really depends on the specific fandom, of course, but. I've never had a problem in any of my fandoms EXCEPT in communities like this one and anon memes, which seem to collect bullshit.

However, if you're fail enough to believe that a character has a canon sexuality unless their sexuality is made a plot point -- which it rarely if ever is -- then you're probably one of the ones who'd help turn a fandom into a place resembling FS anyway. So, yanno, have fun in your Better Than Thou corner.

117. I'm glad to know there was a reason I liked Squidward. =3

118. This made me laugh a lot more than it should have. XD

119. IAWTS ♥

122. Depends on the sideburns, for me. I've seen them drawn ridiculously, and I've seen them drawn so they actually work with the character design. It may also be the fact that I've seen a couple ridiculously hot Reborn cosplayers with the curly sideburns. Unf.

123. I'd try talking to them about it before just dropping them, but... yeah. I don't think I could respect that person at all, or like them very much after that. It may have just been total logic fail on their part, but that's why the suggestion to talk to them: you may find it a lot easier to decide whether they're worth the bullshit if you hear their opinion on their actions and your feelings.

131. ... This sort of secret actually makes me vaguely sad. Am I the only one?

134. I was going to e-slap you, but then I saw your replies to comments and I think this was a badly-phrased, but not actually bad-spirited secret. So that's all right then. Just... please do try to make an effort not to, yanno, mock the effort that your friends are putting into this and make fun of their writing. Isn't the fact that they are trying and writing a good thing?

141. Then you're lame, an idiot, and/or a massive tool? (: Also, that word still does not mean what you think it means. Just by the by.

151. You know, there are people who try to use the "official" spelling of things when it comes out. Not to mention those who were introduced to Reborn through the English release of the manga, therefore came to know Dino as "Dino Chiavorone." It annoys me when I see "Enzo" or "Pantella," too, but that only really tells me what version of spelling the writer is familiar with. Cavallone makes more sense, but Chiavorone is actually the way it's spelled in the manga -- strictly speaking, the people spelling it that way are doing it right.

not!secret #3: I think what they were mostly trying to do was exactly reverse how most other cartoons usually do it? So all they did was change the characters (the main family, the best friends, the cute boy, etc) to be black people, and took the "token black" friend and made her the "token white" friend. Doesn't mean it was a brilliant move, but I don't see what's terribly insulting about it; they may have just been making a nod to shows that are the other way around, or trying to prove a point.

But then, of course, I may be giving them entirely too much credit. XD

Yeah, I could've put it better. E-slap deserved.

Wouldn't mock my friends ever and I do totally support them in their writing effort. A little frustrated with one or two of them who tend to judge their writing on how many people comment but aren't interested in putting work into actually improving their stories and meeting their potential. And while I <3 them, NaNo tends to bring out the worst of it.

The biggest thing that bugs me is that everyone tends to get angsty all together near the end of November every year and I'd love it if my friends were happy and this didn't feel inevitable. :-)
