Distraction thread

I'm freaking out. My husband works on the front line at a hospital and we're both high risk. Please recommend me things you find good distractions?

For me, I like to escape to another world when I'm really anxious and afraid. Scifi and fantasy is the way to go, but happy versions. Happy seasons of Doctor Who and episodes of those not set on current Earth. Babylon 5. Star Trek.

Another thing is animal shows because animals are relaxing and calm my nerves.

Websites that give information that is interesting. My current favorite is listverse for their history lists.

Download a free color by numbers app. I have one called Happy Color and it really helps me get my mind off the shit, especially the super detailed pictures. I hope you feel better soon, and thank you and your husband for doing what you are doing.

Have a nice shower, make a cup of tea or hot chocolate or a comfort food, put a movie you've seen a million times on in the background and play a low-stress game like scrabble or one of the match 3 of something ones.

I've been playing Animal Crossing and drinking a lot of tea, and going on long rural drives with my partner when we get the chance.

I've been listening to a few youtube meditation audios with my eyes closed and that's helped me when I've been feeling overwhelmed.

Also listening to music while playing puzzle games like tetris or something that you can get lost in the flow of the game (currently on a Wolfsheim kick for music).

And I'm suggesting this not because I think you need to keep historical records but because it might be a good mixture of distraction and confronting your fears. I'm going to do it, too, and I'm pretty sure it'll help me get through this.

They made The Show That Goes Wrong, which was one if not the greatest Broadway experiences of my live, seriously I guffawed like no tomorrow! And also Peter Pan Goes Wrong, which I haven't watched yet but I am sure is amazing!

So I have a bee swarm hanging out in a tree next to my house. Hopefully they’ll find a place to call home that’s not inside the walls of my house, which may be where these guys came from. It’s a beautiful day otherwise. But a dude came up to me and started asking about bees, which, okay, fine.

Then he asks me if I’m on linkedin. I’m not. Then he tries to get me to read his posts on his phone about how coronavirus is nbd. We’re in California. On lockdown. We can take walks and stuff but are supposed to stay six feet apart. He starts reading posts to me and at that point I’m like “I’m high risk, my family is high risk,” and he’s like “I’m just trying to reassure you that you don’t have to be so anxious.”

Dude, seriously? You are making me anxious. If you steamroll me because you simply must share your humble opinion, I don’t much care what that opinion actually is, I’m gonna walk away. So I came back inside and now I’m stewing in my yard because fuck that guy.

Ugh. I HATE people like that. What a douche.

In my country (UK) there are usually local listing for bee keepers and bee keeping associations. If we get a swarm you can just call and someone will usually turn up and take it away to be placed in a hive. Don't know if that's helpful to you or not?

Due to several health issues I won't talk about I'm just in a ton of pain. And I can't take painkillers right now, not even over the counter ones. So all I can do is try to distract myself. But just everything hurts and I'm so over it. I haven't been able to do anything actually productive the past couple days.

I'm writing a story where two twelve year olds meet and one of them introduces the other to her favorite comic book series. I'm trying to tone down details to keep the main character from seeming too obsessive and I still find myself wondering if she seems weirdly obsessed with this comic and her new friend who she met the day prior. Though I don't think ive written her doing more than just reading the comics she was lent and being excited to see her new friend. Which I guess is what a twelve year old would do? I mean I'm not aiming for this relationship to come across toxic or anything but...

I'm autistic spectrum and I was an obsessive child growing up to the point where my parents took away my favorite series of books and movies because it was literally all I ever talked about. But to me I didn't see anything wrong with what I was doing. I just liked a thing a lot.

UGHHHHH why can't I be normal?? Is every main character I write going to come across autistic as heck? Or am I just paranoid?
