The Pirates of Dark Water. It's an old cartoon that kicked so much ass that, apparently, the creators felt it shouldn't have existed. It was canceled before the story finished (two Treasures to go, I think) and it hasn't been released to DVD (not legally, anyway--my sister got a bootleg set, pretty decent quality and cheap as dirt). You can probably find it on the 'Tube, though.

104. The thing I always saw with TTTW is that it KNOWS the relationship is far from sweet and perfect. The narrative - and the charavers even - KNOW it's not a healthy relationship and they realize how it looks. That? Already makes it better than Twilight. Then we also have that the story has more plot besides the romance, that the disease actually DOES something other than being shiny, and more than anything, there are consequences, because in Twilight, just about everything seems to be consequences-free or taking the consequence-lite version of it.

And I also really, really liked the premise that 'everything that has already happened you can't change', since in most stories that's one of the things that always happen: you can rewrite history, nothing is set in stone. Does it make things creepy? Fuck yes. But that's one of the things I like. If Twilight hadn't tried to add the 'PERRRRFECTION' creed to it, and with a better writing (because I think TTTW's prose is gorgeous), things might have been different.

I'll admit to this: I did hate that Henry left that last letter, thus leaving things 'to happen'. I would have liked the chance to see how things happened without Henry to say a thing.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the characters didn't deal with the consequences of their actions in TTTW far more than in Twilight. Henry and Claire's attitude seemed to be that cheating on his GF and driving her to suicide and then judging her for it were perfectly acceptable because they were in True Love and that meant other people's feelings didn't matter. That REALLY bothered me.

My thoughts exactly.

If you want to help us do something about it, there's information over this way (http://aang-aint-white.livejournal.com/646.html). We have a long way to go, yet, but we're trying. And we can use all the help we can get.

103. I'm so glad that my favorite screwed-up fictional romance is Volgin/Raikov. We get a lot less public amateur psychoanalysis.
164. I think that she's pretty and reasonably talented, but I'm afraid that time won't do her looks much good. She's already so thin, her face will probably be positively drawn-looking in twenty years.

Seriously. Stephanie Meyer's writing is utter SHIT!! compared to Audrey Niffeneger, and I'm not completely disagreeing with the fact that both the series and the book had similar themes, but seriously I could barely get through Twilight it sucked so freakin bad. Stephanie Meyer's twilight series should not have been published, I felt like I was reading a bad fanfic written by a ten year old girl.

Re: 104

There's a difference between "slept with Jesse's girlfriend" and "punches women." No way a John Wayne-loving southern boy like Jesse was ever going to forgive that.

[identity profile] indianne.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
113. Fuck, I play an 'actual instrument' and I like Guitar Hero because it's fun. and hate the fact that I can't afford the one with drums :(

125. The only sylar ship I have is with Noah because they were awesome and if there was any fic (;.;) woobie-fying would be somewhat harder. But I do wish fandom wasn't quite so keen on him in every possible combination.

136. I find Hetalia kind of creepy even without the kink. Sure, comics and fandom can deal with big, nasty issues, but I'm not sure that's how to go about it.

164. I'm not sure that they would hate you for disliking her, since the world seems to have a hate-on for Kiera Knightly. If you don't think she's a great actor, fine. Unreasonably skinny standard of beauty? fine. But the random bitching and massive hate for someone you've never met and who hasn't actually done or said anything to deserve it pisses me off. It's just so pointless.

[identity profile] indianne.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
164. To refine that last point, it was aimed at general you and other commenters. not so much the secret poster.

Aaaaw I like her a lot, who cares what everyone says ♥

Because I am lazy to make a secret for this.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm beginning to get the feeling that the creation of a KINK MEME in any fandom is like an automatic countdown doomsday device for said fandom's inevitable slow and painful demise into a cesspool of toxic anonymous waste matter, I'm not sure if the good stuff that comes out of it is worth it, frankly.

And now, I grieve for all the fandoms I have loved and lost and will likely continue to lose. :(

102.) My username is fandom related and I'm not ashamed of it at all. Somehow, I manage to show people who I am and make friends even though my nickname is fandom related. Maybe Lord of the Rings is just a big part of my life, and has been for awhile.

103.I like Twilight, ship the hell out of Alice/Bella and Jacob/Bella, and nor do I find Edward/Bella romantic or meaningful. But I also like Twilight. Does that make me shallow, lonley, desperate or stupid?

110....This has got to be one of the hottest pictures I've ever seen. And now I get the feeling the only reason I'm going to see the movie is because James is hot. Villain/Hero subtext is FTW. Except neither James nor Bella are villanous or heroic, but still...
azurite: (twilight - fursplode!)

[personal profile] azurite 2008-12-15 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call you shallow, lonely, desperate, or stupid. You're probably a rare breed amongst Twilight fans who take the source material as the word of God or something, and who look at Ed/Bel and think OMG SO SEXY!!1!

I honestly believe that fanfic could be a hell of a lot better than the canon, because the canon set such low standards. The badness of Twilight actually opens up a lot of doors for the folks that are bold/daring enough to tread those murky waters.

I've had more than a few Twilight plotbunnies recently (and while reading the books, too), but I don't think I'd ever write them, because the fandom (fangirls, existing fanfic) scares me. I don't think it's a crime necessarily to "like" Twilight, but to not recognize the epic badness of very large parts of it? That... is kind of disturbing. I think it's perfectly fine to like certain elements of it, but to gush over it as a whole, thinking it's some Great Piece of Literature-- that's what would get me kinda disturbed.

I wasn't even sure if anybody would be willing to squint long enough at the secret to figure out what all the background text was and who these nameless occupational epithet people were, but it seems that MGS fans have a higher tolerance than some for this sort of thing.
Your interest is very encouraging.

101 - Are you me? o.O It started when I was 8 years old, too! Except I'd have to add an extra ten years to your secret..XD Yup, for me it's not 10 years later, it's TWENTY years later. What can I say? Childhood crushes die hard. :) Enjoy yours! Cheers. :)

113 - I hate hate HATE when people ask me "well, why don't you learn to play a REAL guitar?" when they see how hooked on Guitar Hero I am. Um, it's just a VIDEO GAME? I feel like telling them that if they think learning to play a real guitar is anything like playing a freakin' video game, they have a shitload of issues and it honestly creeps me out that they are that dense. :/

140 - THIS. The movies, especially the first one, are amazingly well-structured stories with crazy twists and surprises, things are always wrapped up in the most craziest of ways...I love them! *icon, ahaha* I don't care if you hate the movies or find them boring, but if you think it's JUST a gore fest and can't see all the morality issues and wonderful story-telling that's involved, you're an idiot, plain and simple. No, seriously. You can't be THAT gifted in the IQ department if you have failed to notice ALL THAT. Well, either that or you don't pay attention to movies at all. :P

157 - LMAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Ohhhh I needed that laugh. Thanks, anon.

157. While I'm not particularly happy about Aang's casting choice, to go so far as to call it racist to see him white is a bit out there. Personally I don't really see him as Asian either. More than anything, he has an Indian (as in India) inflection.

157

[identity profile] lifeisaglitch.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
He's got big eyes and doesn't talk with any sort of accent. Why would I see him as asian?
