Today: Your fandom friends.

Tomorrow: Your RL friends.

The next day: Your family.

After that: Who knows?

Laugh at me if you want. Call me alarmist if you want. Yeah, your boyfriend was right about a small subset of your friends in one fandom. I bet he'll keep it up until he alienates you from those who actually do give a shit about you. He won't stop until he's the only one in your life.

How do I know this?

Don't ask. I need to sign off soon before Someone knows I'm talking to my not-friends (those who compete with him for my attention) again.

I love all the 'THE KINK MEME DOESN'T REPRESENT FANDOM!!!1!' comments from the Hetalia fans & defenders. Kink memes are really fandom at its most honest. It's what fandom at large wants to see yet is too afraid to ask for under a user name for fear of reprisal from friends and fellow fans. This wank is so humorous because the people asking for Rape of Nanking fic and the like are probably on the friends lists of some of the people here claiming that this type of thing doesn't represent them and to ignore those sick, evil anons on the meme that they'd never have anything to do with.

As always, Hetalia fandom is far too much srs biz than it even deserves to be.

Re: 136

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because everything should always be judged by its darker side. Always. With no exception. Disney fandom is full of a bunch of furries. All people who like high-school dramas are pedophiles. And every human on the face of the Earth is a horrible human being because a few people chose to partake in horrible, horrible habits. And nobody in these groups chooses NOT to do those things, because everyone likes the same things and everyone is into the grossest things ever.

Did you miss the part were everyone was wary about the one furry vore request? Or the countless comments of "I was worried about this turning out badly, since it's such a sensitive subject"? Or how some of the more offensive requests have still gone unfilled? Or how other Hetalia fans are saying "Yeah, that stuff's pretty gross."

Kindly take your thinly-veiled insults and shove them up your pretentious ass.

104. I haven't actually read either book, but to the best of my osmotic understanding, TTW is very aware that the fucked-up aspects are, indeed, fucked-up, whereas Twilight (and many its fans) seem to consider the creepy parts romantic.

108. Even without getting into a debate over whether liking slash is immature or not, there is no requirement in life that you be completely mature 100% of the time. You're allowed to do fun silly stuff in your spare time once in a while. If you're old enough to be worrying about maturity, you're probably old enough to have the right to relax and be a little immature once in a while. Don't let self-consciousness keep you from something that makes you happy.

113. Aww. Don't let the Stop Having Fun Guys spoil things for you- those kinds of people aren't really worth much anyway. And stop telling yourself that you'll always be on your own. Your current group may be drifting away, but you don't get just one single opportunity in this life to make friends. Even if you lose them, it doesn't mean there won't ever be anyone else.

Hugs and good luck to you, anon.

123. Oh god, now you've got me contemplating it too.

129. I have probably theorized about stupider stuff. Nonetheless... that picture practically had me laughing just looking at it, and your text pushed it over the edge into utterly freaking hilarious.

134. Is that Pirates of Dark Water? I used to watch that show when I was little!

143. Y'know, I don't care for G3s either and I think G2s are hideous abominations... but you don't get to dictate what counts as a "real MLP" or real fan. Just like with a media or game fandom, you can pick and choose your personal canon, but new canon is still new canon even when it sucks. The new ponies are just as official as the originals and people who enjoy them are still enjoying a genuine MLP product.

146. While it's true that species with radically different physiologies would generally find each other unattractive, that does not rule out the possibility of a few individuals being open-minded enough, in love enough, or just plain kinky enough to give it a try.
Also, ZEX <3

149. Does that mean people shouldn't write about murder mysteries or sword combat or historical events or anything else they don't have firsthand experience of, or does your rule only apply to sex? I've read perfectly good smut that you'd never guess was written by virgins because they actually bothered to do some research in order to not screw up horribly. Personal experience isn't the only way to avoid inaccuracies, and honestly, in some cases it isn't even the best way.

157. Y'know, I could totally see how someone, especially someone with no exposure to the show, could look at Aang and maybe think he looks white (or Japanese, if they think he's from an anime). The majority of the cast, not so much, but Aang's features are racially ambiguous enough IMO* that I could see where someone might draw that impression.

(*I am, however, faceblind/prosopagnosiac and am thus kind of impaired when it comes to recognizing things like race or even familiar faces, so I could very well be abnormal in this perception.)

That being said, I know the context this is coming from, and FUCK THAT SHIT.
Whoever was in charge of that casting needs to be kicked out of the movie business. What happened to Earthsea was bad enough, and that was just SciFi Channel dreck.

168. This sounds vaguely familiar.... Have you talked about this 'ostensibly original story' anywhere before, or is there someone else with an MGS-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off genderswap femmeslash AU who I'm confusing you with?

172. Even for people who do care, vanishing off the face of the net for a while isn't a big deal online unless they're used to you the kind of person who's present all the time regardless of circumstances. It's generally understood that things come up in real life, and that those things are usually given priority.

TB1: I could swear I've seen this one posted before.

TB2. Good for you, anon.
...and I kind of hope that one day 113 can feel as okay about things as you do.

140: THIS. The third movie was very, very, VERY well-done. The whole plot about the guy who's son was murdered by a drunk driver who got off pretty much scott-free hit WAY too close to home, unfortunately, and while it was kinda hard to watch, I felt like I could relate with the dead boy's father in some way, and it made the movie that much more intense. EXTREMELY good points were made about punishiment and revenge and how little it accomplishes, other than make things worse.
This movie really, really makes you think. :/

102. Please don't project your issues on other people. Thanks. (:

103. Congratulations, you're a bit of a dick.

106. EVERY CANON NEEDS A LESBIAN NINJA. True facts, yo.

108. Right, I know exactly how you feel, I feel so guilty that I haven't grown out of het yet. But my god, every time I see a series, it seems like, I see a boy and a girl character who seem to have chemistry and like each other and... bam! There it goes again. D: I like it, but I'm afraid my friends think I'm immature for just shipping het all the time. I feel bad for not being able to break the habit.

... Seriously, I hope that helped you realize how WTF you sound. You feel like you should have grown out of slash by now? Well, sorry. I must be stuck in a weird oscillation of maturity and breathtaking immaturity, because I tend to like het, slash, and femslash just about equally. More fool me, eh?

109. DEXTER'S SECRET = AUTOMATICALLY BEST EVER ♥

113. D: That sucks. Ignore the haters, honey -- people are smug, elitist dicks over. Well. Everything. Keep on loving what you love. ♥

119. O_o BUT THAT SAID. You should tell her. D: I bet she might be worried about any of her friends she knows IRL finding out about it and hating her for it. Make her feel awesome, OP. :3

123. I can get behind this. I love thinking of random musicals for my favorite series. Especially Buffy-style, where they all know that something wtf is up with them randomly bursting into song, but they can't help it. XD

124. ... Grell was calling him Sebas-chan. If they had an English character subtitled as calling anybody -chan, I would be a bit irked. Sebby is lame but actually fits in this case. To sum up: if the character is actually calling the other character by a nickname, it would be bad subbing NOT to use a nickname in the subtitles.

128. I don't quite ship them, but DAYAM, am I weird for finding that picture on the right suddenly, incredibly hot? .___.

129. But pondering and trying to make sense of little details is fun!

131. I agree with your main secret but I wish they could work out their differences even WITHOUT Tulip dying, because I like her. OT3? (MAN THAT'S MY SOLUTION TO A LOT OF STUFF.)

136. Because totally, the worst 2% of the kink meme represents the entire fandom. The canon doesn't provide anything sweet or heart-wrenching or thought-provoking that could possibly interest anyone other than horrible, horrible perverts.

Image

Oh, wait.

139. This isn't related to the original secret, but OP, your opinion that people shouldn't want a character to be redeemed because he deserves to die if he's killed people, including his own father, made me giggle before. Not because it's a BAD OPINION or anything, though I can understand the people who want him redeemed -- because the whole point of redemption is for them to no longer be deserving of being punished for past crimes -- but because it makes me think "wow, one of the bad-guy protagonists of my favorite books is SCREWED, then! |D"

*goes back to reading The Coldfire Trilogy like a dork*

140. I agree with the first part, but I can't agree with the second. Disliking it when people assume you like a canon for reasons you don't, and refusing to believe you when you say it COULD be anything other than what they think, is totally justified. But some people just like the traps and gore, and there's nothing wrong with that. What right do you have to tell them "but you're DOING IT WRONG!" when it's just how they enjoy the movies?

146. HAHAHA LOVE FOR THAT ART, LOVE.

I like the idea if A)the alien characters aren't necessarily sexually attracted to humans, but choose humans because they are sexually compatible and can mate and produce offspring, or B)if it's not so much a "MARS NEEDS WOMEN!" trope and the alien and human having sex are doing it because they love each other, not so much because they find each other beautiful/handsome. c:

149. I believe enough people have told you why this secret is dumb. So I'm just gonna reiterate that it's very dumb and move along.

152. ... That is so cute.

157. Oh, great, casting wank. You do realize that Hollywood has a history of failing at casting movie adaptations of anything, pretty much across the board, right? It's not racism so much as LOLOLO LET'S USE THIS MOVIE TO MILK THIS ACTOR'S POPULARITY!!!! I just am crossing my fingers that, despite the weirdass casting, the actors and actresses might at least be able to do a good job and the script won't suck ass.

158. People on the Internet have a sort of "NEVER FORGIVE, NEVER FORGET" policy. They form snap judgements and opinions about people very, very quickly, and then firmly sit on that opinion and never change it, ever. Especially if it means changing it for the better. Once you have people dislike you On The Internet, odds are good that they will never stop disliking you, because they have a weird problem with not being able to see people on the Internet as actual human beings. IT BAFFLES ME, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT IS TRUE.

... for the most part. I'm hoping you'll find some of the people who don't do that, rare and precious as they are -- good luck, and I hope you find your place again. Good for you for changing. *hugs*

160. That movie's ending broke everyone's heart and will continue to do so forever. ):

170. ... Why is it suddenly bad to have a crush on someone who actually does important shit, as opposed to pretty people of less substance, now? I DON'T GET IT.

172. Your boyfriend is a dick, and your old friends are as well. D: I don't know who they were, but man, I'm sorry. I'd be flipping out if one of the people I talk to regularly and am close to disappeared for a few DAYS with no warning, much less MONTHS.

173. Thatissocute. *A* I hope you get them back, OP! And also, WHOO GO SPECIAL SQUIRREL ABILITIES!

175. ....... I can't unsee this. Oh the horrible, horrible cahoots they could be in!

not!secret #2: Because, dammit, Twilight is absolutely the first thing ever that's put a vampire in a romantic or less than evil role! Everything since Nosferatu has every single vampire that exists either killing or turning any human they meet -- that's what REAL VAMPIRES are like, gosh darnit! *shakes fist*

doing!it!wrong #2: Yep! Every single human being ever is like that! Every one of us! Except for you, you unique and pure special snowflake, you!

Guess what, honey? You're human too. If you're gonna judge us all as being horrible scum who deserve hell for the atrocities we ~all~ commit, without being willing to judge each person as an individual human being, then you're alllll wrapped up in that too, scumbucket. ♥

136

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
OP is obviously very paranoid.

someone out there is getting off on some shit like that. it could be anyone, so I'll just assume everyone and everything related is just as sick. 'cause its hazardous to your health, you know...

Re: 136

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the OP lives in America. After the last 8 years, it might be hard for them to break the habit.

136

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
...that's kind of the reason why I'm hoping once the anime comes out, there'll be another Hetalia comm set up that has all the Rule 34 things and fans who just want porn go there specifically, because I don't want to deny them of what they want, but I really don't like the 24/7 rule 34 in my face as well. I know there's now a mature tag, but essentially, the possibilty that there's going to be a bigger influx of people using that tag and the non-existence of a tag that appeals to history geeks and actual discussion like it does somewhat now is going to be a little disheartening/off putting and it's very likely by them will come the super ships and the wank after (Not anybody's fault, really, but it's the one thing we've learnt from um... history... that comes with bigger fandoms? ) . I don't mind going back to complete lurker mode, but I'll miss what is now here, the way I kind of miss no longer posting on PW or TWEWY or (insert fandoms that got big).

...it's been fun so far though, guys, really. at least it should still be so for another year? One could hope. :)

Re: 136

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
24/7 Rule 34? Honestly, the Kink Meme is in a totally difference place and it's rare to see any mature stuff outside of in the comm.

You can avoid it you know, no point of making a separate comm for the few anyway.

[identity profile] katmaxwell.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Something I've noticed in reading over all of the comments related to this secret is that a Main Problem seems to be that no one critiqued the requesters, or the fic-writers; that the people reading the kink meme passed over the requests if they were uninterested (or disgusted/insert your appropriate adjective here) and did not react negatively to them, in any way, and so all that exists are people endorsing the requests of praising the fic.

I'd like to ask a question:

When was the last time you saw a purely negative comment to any fic, solely regarding the subject matter? Most communities require warnings so that people won't stumble upon a fic about underage incestuous rape; no one replies to that fic with, "You disgust me," or, "How dare you?" -- and if they were to, they would be quickly lambasted by others.

So while I can see the point of the OP, that they feel major historical events are being trivialized for the sake of someone getting off (which, I would argue in most cases, were not the point of the fics written -- and I say this as someone who fulfilled a request that could be possibly viewed as such; but who intended it to be horrible and gutwrenching and in no way hot); it seems the critique here truly lies in the fact that no one spoke out against it negatively; or perhaps that it didn't even occur to someone to react to it negatively. I know that if I saw/see a fic that I disagree with on a moral level, I overlook it -- I don't give it the time of day.

So really, OP, you should be railing against Fandom as a whole, and how fandom culture stomps down upon people calling others out for having different morals than they themselves do. And if you do choose to take up that crusade, good luck.

Re: 136

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like non-Hetalia fans said anything either. They just made a secret. Most people probably hit the back button. The only reason anyone is speaking out now is because it's on F!S, so wanking is okay.

PIRATES OF DARK WATER SECRET. The Internet, you can has it.

...probably doesn't help that the poor series was canceled before actually getting to finish its story. But I found downloads a couple of years ago (following vague childhood memories and the advice of a forum specializing in '80s TV shows), and what there is was just as incredible as I remembered.

102. I did that with my first fandom (though I told them that I hadn’t!) but the nickname stuck, and I still respond to it. So does that mean you hate me too? (not meant to be catty, just curious)

122. Oh my god, OP, me too. Me too. But only as Hellboy, because seriously, that tail? Could do AMAZING things, I am sure. Seriously.

140. Can we be best friends? You pretty much summed it up perfectly. Especially when saying that about the first two. The first one is clearly the LEAST gory of the five, and both 1 and 2 have characters that interconnect to one another in complex ways. From 3 on they get really, really violent in totally horrible new ways, yes that’s true, but the story stays true to the theme of the movies. I just, yeah, people who generalize about them clearly don’t really understand. Which is fine, because this genre totally isn’t for everyone, but damn, stop judging those of us who love these movies.

Yeah. Sorry. Small town dweller and member of a VERY conservative family here, and I’ve been given a lot of shit about liking these movies.

144. Oooh, Sabriel. I should reread that.

153. Yeah, she turns me on faster than just about anyone else. GAWD.

Between this picture and the Hellboy secret, I'm feeling the need for a good porn fic. Dammit.

156. LORD SMITZI! Hell to the yeah, and why does it bother you that he's in a bunch of movies?

160. I STILL get all teared up! I really do.

Ns!1. I love the style of this secret, as well as the sentiment.

120 - Mmm sexy ship is exceedingly sexy.

159 - Jon handled that interview fantastically. The first half was a fascinating discussion on human nature, and then Jon tackled that one question... "Symantics is cold comfort when it comes to humanity." This. He really warmed my heart in that interview, even while Huckabee chilled it to the core.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't watch that interview because people like Huckabee make me want to throw things at the tv, and I don't want to break my tv. But it really made me happy to learn how well Jon showed him up. Jon = &heartss;

yeah.
Also, I totally had a crush on them in the game.

157. Who has two thumbs and doesn't give a shit?

This guy! d(^^)b

Seriously, I'm a fan of the show and I really, really don't care, as long as the actors do a decent job. I guess this makes me a horrible person.

Re: 157

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't make you a horrible person. It probably means you have the luxury of not caring. It definitely makes me wonder what legitimate excuse they could possibly have for casting white actors in explicitly Asian and Inuit roles.

Hint: There isn't one.

too big 3-I agree 100%. He's my favorite character from any comic book (aside from Batman), and have never really related to any character as much as him. Adrian Veidt is my hero, and I love to see him get love. :D

To be honest, all of those topics are things I have liked and would like to see explored seriously in the Hetalia fandom, because I think they would take us above and beyond the shallow bishounen crap everyone seems to think we're only good for. There are, in fact, works of published fiction discussing the Rape of Nanjing, Pearl Harbor, the acquisition of Hong Kong, pretty much everything you can find on that list. Some of them are even critically acclaimed. Hell, I think some of the writers filling those prompts were going down this route themselves.

The fact only remains that the kink meme is not the place for it. People, you wouldn't have problems with someone writing fic about Nanjing, you have problems because someone apparently wrote porn for it (they didn't). I could use a little less generalization.

Re: 136

(Anonymous) 2008-12-14 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree on one hand, and on the other, I don't want to lose part of what makes that meme awesome.

Maybe renaming it or something.

Why am I here?

[identity profile] shadsie.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Boredom kills, it does, it does.

101. Hey, my latest fandom obession! Yeah, don't feel bad about that. If it happens, can I join you? In the meantime, can you help me find that wardrobe that will lead me to Narnia? What's weird is that my old longtime (seven years) fandom obession is set in a world I *don't* really want to go to (Trigun... Planet Gunsmoke is a harsh world and I consider myself to have already lived there, having grown up in the southwest). It is my thought that almost everyone who plays the Zelda games would love to go away to Hyrule, so you aren't alone.

102. For that very reason: I named myself after my cat. When I first entered online fandom, I wrote fanfics under the name of "Shadowcat" - it evolved into "Lady Shadowcat" (still used sometimes), and now Shadsie. Felt it better to name myself after a beloved pet than to have anything fandom specific. I find fandom-specific names silly. Still, I don't really look down on people who have them. It's just kind of funny when someone is known under one fandommy name and they switch fandoms so their name is out of place...

109. That is too cute for words. XD

149. What about people who actually do research? Sometimes, it can make up for experience. I'm a gen-writer, myself, with not *much* in the way of sexual experience (feel a little frightened revealing that here, don't kill me, please). I don't write "smut" per-se, but, occasionally, one of my stories will call for a mild sex scene as part of the overreacing plot. If I am in doubt about what I am doing, I ask friends who have more sexual experience than I. For example, I had a brief, awkward sex scene (supposed to be awkward with the couple) in an non-fandom story I wrote - I shared the scene with a friend who's been married/divorced/soforth and they said "Yeah, it reads well." I think that if one doesn't have the necessary experience, one can always ask. And some thing should just be common sense. I mean, I write about people dying all the time and I haven't died, obviously, nor have I killed anyone, so on, and so forth... that's all imagined/improvised and researched when necessary. My advice is just to try to ignore those who don't bother to research/just don't care/don't handle things well, not to broad-brush *all* the virgin writers out there.

154. Law of fandom that the crap gets attention? Or maybe just on the fanfiction network? One of my most popular fics is one that I now hate - I keep it up because I'm nice, don't like to kill people's fun, but... AUGH! Okay, it's one of the *few* Legato x Vash fics in the Trigun fandom, written as something of an experiment, but *headdesk.* It's like people don't notice how forced it is or how out of character Legato is being... Then there was that time I transcribed a roleplay between my friends and me into a fanfic, posted a couple of chapters to see what would happen (it was a multiple Mary Sue-fest, I knew that from the get-go). Was getting reviews LEFT AND RIGHT and got so embarassed by them I took the experiment down forthwith. My favorites among my own stories, the stuff I really put a lot of thought and soul into, are lucky if they get 5 reviews, total.

158. I have no idea who you are, have no idea what you're fanning, there, but my advice is not make a big public apology. It will probably only hurt you. I've seen too many things like that get roasted by people.

Problem is, you know the origins of your name, but others don't (before they ask or before they look to where you might have told). Were they to see 'Shadowcat,' the first thing that pops into their mind might not be your pet. They might not even know that you HAVE/HAD a pet, let alone a cat.

The first thing that popped into my mind when I read that 'shadsie' was short for 'Shadowcat' was the X-Men character. You might not be in X-Men fandom. You might not even know what the X-Men are! So fandom names aren't necessarily silly, because a) they might not be fandom names at all, as in your case, and b) who cares if they're out of place? They demonstrate that someone really likes something enough to be identified with it.

114. OMG that was one of my favorite movies when I was little. And that was my favorite scene from it.

125. I love Sylar, but I hate every pairing with him too (except Sylar/Mohinder, but only with Sylar-as-Zane in season one). Personally, I prefer the idea of him being asexual.
