167. ...D: I can't say that I agree. Sorry. I mean, I love the art from then but, Jesus, everything is better now. He sounds better, he's a happy man for once in his life, he didn't lose every friend he's ever had, and he's still making great music. Every time I watch LOTMS it breaks my heart. I couldn't be happier that he's past that point in his life.

It's great for drama in fics, but that's about the only way I enjoy it. I care about him too much. And I'm not saying that you don't, but maybe you need to take a second look at him now.

163. I'm inclined to agree. I can understand people "identifying with" him, because people can identify with anything, but striving to be like him and talking like it's a good thing... yeah. Scary. He's a borderline-abusive asshole, no matter how much you love him to have to admit that. And if not, we're not watching the same show. There's some merit in honesty and bluntness, etc., certainly, but only to a certain degree. All this is what primarily turned me away from the show, actually. He's an ass who gets away with everything, doesn't have to take responsibility, and has friends and people who stick by him despite how unforgivably horribly he treats them. It's totally idealized--we all *want* to not have to conform to social rules, but A), that =/= being a total bastard, and B), there's a reason they're called "rules"--you break them, there are consequences. When did being/trying to be a decent person go out of style? D: (I miss the time when this was presented as a moral dilemma, not a moral truth. Now the only time they ever question House's bluntness and say-whatever-the-hell-he-wants-ness is to prove that yes, it is indeed superior to being decent/caring/gentle/etc. And as a consequence (about the only one XD), Wilson, the character who's purpose was supposed to be leaving "which is better, blunt honesty or gentle lies, and how and when?" up in the air, gets beaten to a pulp both canonically and in fandom. D:)

Also, being a virgin doesn't mean you don't know what makes you/others feel hot and if you're a good writer your lack of experience won't matter. I was so impressed with Jon Stewart's ripostes, the way he managed not to let anything slide but never lowered himself to the point where Huckabee could have dismissed him as arguing from a place of emotion. It was beautiful, and I wish there was some way for me to tell Jon Stewart how much it means to me that he is able to speak like that, to put that discourse out there, to show such real beauty and humanity, and do it all in a form that is so accessable.

Jesse/Tulip is as close to an OTP as I'm ever going to have and I have RPed Jesse in poly without a Tulip but with a great Cassidy. No way could I do Jesse/Cass without feeling it was insanely OOC for Jesse. Not for Cassidy; I can totally see Cass going for it, but definitely not for straight as an arrow Jesse goddamn Custer.

149. Oh dear, here we go again. Let's start by passing a law to ban women from writing male characters and men from writing female characters. Since the only difference between having sex and having any other experience ever is society's attitude toward it, you'd have to shut down any branch of writing save for autobiographies just to avoid being a total hypocrit. <3

That said, I've never so much as held hands with someone I'm sexually attracted to, and I've been told that my porn makes them want to have more sex themselves so they'd be able to write like me. Writing and posting secrets while in the throes of annoyance =/= good idea.

Even though my username is Rinnia (which is related to TWO fandoms, my god!), most people call me Alex, since that's what my name is. The only reason I don't go by Alex everywhere is that it's rarely available. And even if I changed my name (which I have - my username was Cyallin before, which is also a smush of two character names), I'd still behave like myself, and write like myself, and have the same friendships. ...okay, in some ways I'm glad that 99% of Hetalia wank happens outside of the actual fandom, because I'd hate for any of it to seep in. Hetalia fandom is generally sweet and awesome and lovely, I've had such a good reception there, and I've run across some really phenomenal work.

But that being said? There's a difference between including dark elements in fiction and eroticizing or romanticizing said dark themes. I'll agree that a kink meme probably isn't the best place to make such a distinction, but come the fuck on, people, I thought one of the central premises of fandom -- and of writing in general -- is that we don't necessarily condone the actions we depict in fiction. (Lord knows I don't; I've written Hetalia darkfic -- though nothing on the kinkmeme -- but I'm presenting it as wrong and twisted and disturbing, and why the fuck shouldn't I?)

In a nutshell, the issue shouldn't be the content itself, it should be how the content is presented. And competent and mature writers can make the distinction between presenting something and condoning it. Not to say that every writer is necessarily competent and mature, but the ones who are aren't necessarily trivializing history or turning horrific events into fap material. The inclusion of sex in fic doesn't automatically make something fap material, or it shouldn't, because goddamnit, not everything with sex in it is erotica. I feel really strongly about this last point, and I've spent months grappling with it, and I hate the assumption that because I choose to deal with mature themes in a plausible fashion in my work, I'm doing it for the sole purpose of getting myself or my readers off.

I know I sound really cranky and pretentious right now, but fuck it, I am. I'm sick of justifying my work, and I'm sick of being judged for the fandoms I participate in.

And other people's points about the kink meme not being indicative of the fandom as a whole still stand. I mean, hell, I'm probably something of an anomaly within the fandom. Still, why the fuck should the rest of us have to apologize for what some people on the kink meme might like? Kink memes are breeding grounds for weird shit. That doesn't mean the entire fandom is filled with godless perverts.

As for my opinion, I totally understand where you're coming from. As for myself, I'm not into the kink place and I try to stay away. I know people who don't like it nor care about it, so not everyone in Hetalia is... like that. I know people who like it, though, and some are annoying.

As for the kink place, like I said (in a neutral view, that is) I know where you're coming from. Others think it's fine because, well, it's history. People should be over it even though it was horrible. Some people aren't as sensitive, you know? Also, some people who aren't as sensitive aren't jerks about it, either. But hell, I don't know what people think of this or try to accomplish for sure. Maybe it's for the characters, human personality-wise, not country-wise, you get what I'm saying? Or for the history in a, for lack of better terms, whacked out more realistic plot.

In a more negative view, almost every fandom is like this, too, so, mehhh. I think people who judge the fandom or judge the fandom based off the kink meme should judge more on the person. At least people aren't going "YES. RAPE OF NANKING. BEST. INCIDENT. EVER."

136. Um. So the kink meme is messed up. Aren't the kink memes of a lot of other fandoms messed up too? Granted, this one has the potential to be a lot more offensive, and it lives up to that, but don't most kink memes take every possible weird and messed up kink and push its boundaries? I don't see why it would be unusual for a kink meme of Hetalia to be like this. No, I don't approve of it, but I'm not surprised. If you don't like the Hetalia fandom you can avoid it, boycott it, and such, but don't judge all of us because the kink meme does exactly what a Kink meme is meant to do.

Yes there are hetalia fans who are messed up enough to request it, but that doesn't mean that all of us do.

I dunno, I am tired of Hetalia being looked down upon as a fandom. There is some real gold in the kink meme, and then there are things like this. The fandom itself is kind, with very little wank, and very little conflict. The community is even so mild that people are trying to bridge the gap between the Japanese and English fandoms. It's kind of wonderful.

I guess I might be a bit desensitized, but really, there are a lot of offensive things in fandom in general. When I got into hetalia I had a lot of misgivings because I thought "This has the potential to be really messed up," and it does, but what is amazing is that it only really manifests in the kink meme. The fandom as a whole is really quite wonderful, polite, and politically correct on the whole. In the end, I can't stop people from posting pedo shit, incest, bestiality or anything like that, or fic about the rape of Nanjing... I can't agree with it, but I suppose it's something along the lines of if you want to write it, write it, because I can't stop them and I don't want to spoil the peace of a relatively quiet and wank-free community. I'd rather they post it in the kink meme than in the main comm, after all, and I'd defend their right to do that.

I dunno, "I can't agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it", sort of.

My main issue with the "it's the kinkmeme, it's not the main fandom!" is that due to the kinkmeme's anonymous nature, anyone in Hetalia fandom I meet could have been that Rape of Nanking requester/writer. Any person who expresses an interest in Hetalia could also be the person who gets off on China raping Tibet.

I can't be comfortable in that kind of environment.
