I salute you. I hated the TTW. I hate the hype. And it felt much skeevier than even Twilight to me. I think the whole "befriending your future mate while she's pre-pubscent and you know you're gonna marry her some day" gives me the willies period.

Re: 104

Thank you. It's such a relief to know I'm not alone. :( This book squicked me like no other.

104. To its credit, The Time-Traveler's Wife is much better written than Twilight and has an original premise, but you're right, there are some very disturbing undercurrents in that book--which might be okay, if it wasn't presenting itself as an epic tale of love and destiny and bullshit like that. I really hated Claire by the end.

145. Mmm, Dr. Girlfriend.

157. You must absolutely love the casting news, then.

Re: 104

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I have nothing to say, except -- wow, your comment and the one I just made a little way down about The Time-Traveler's Wife are almost identical. And I agree about the second part. I wouldn't mind the book nearly as much if it didn't seem to hold itself in such high regards.

149-More like you just don't think people should write stupid porn, whether or not it's because they haven't had whatever sexual experience they're writing about. Let's not discourage people who do their research and write well!

157-I don't care if somebody happens to look at a picture out of context and thinks Aang looks white. It bugs me when people act like just because somebody might do that it justifies whitewashing in the movie.

160-The title alone broke my heart as a kid because those friendships never end well in cartoons.

You're not the only one, the fic I'm most proud of got, I think, five comments? And for me it's not just fandom, it's academic as well. The essays I spend little time or thought on always get higher grades than stuff I spend hours slaving away on. It's annoying, but better than the alternative. :/

108. Liking slash has nothing to do with your level of maturity. Older women birthed slash after all. How you behave as a fan is indicative of your level of maturity though.

104. Well, whether or not they're a hypocrite depends more on why they don't like Twilight, no? But I think you're missing the point: Time Traveler's Wife is applauded not for its mediocre writing or disturbing gender relations, but because the central concept is fascinating science fiction, and Twilight isn't a tenth as interesting. (Disclaimer: I agree with you about the message of TTW, and don't really like it. I also doubt that as many people have read it as have said they have).

139. Agree :(

157. What race do you think he is? I mean, he is a cartoon, not an actual person, and just going off his skin color, he could be white or east asian.

157

[identity profile] bouncy-erbear.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only that but he's a cartoon set in a DIFFERENT WORLD. Sure, most of it's based on asian culture but the idea of "Asia" doesn't exist there. There IS no Asia :3

107 - YES! I can't believe it, but I can now barely stand the man that used to be my favorite Indian actor. SRK was never about the looks, but the personality. When that went south, I couldn't stand to see him in movies anymore. The only thing of his I'll watch now is any movie with Kajol too. Kajol/SRK will forever be my OTP for Indian cinema; DDLJ is still my all time favorite movie and defines cinema love for me.

154. Same here. Well, the first paragraph anyway.

136

[identity profile] lapoix.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen that's mostly the kink meme, and only like a tiny fraction of it. I mean, I like Hetalia, but if that shit was running rampant throughout the fandom, I doubt that I would be a part of it. The majority of it is better-natured than that, I've personally found.

102, 103, 104, 109, 110, 126, 143, 144, 153, 154, 164

[identity profile] sailor-escapism.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
102. lol. I don't feel bad about my fandom-influenced nickname. I'm sure some people dismiss me as a silly Moonie, but I've always been an escapist, always liked Sailor Moon (despite not really liking anime in general anymore) and I have a different nickname for my personal LJ, so. *shrug*

103. God, same here. I try not to judge them, but I so do.

104. I've been wondering if The Time Traveler's Wife was any good. Thanks for the heads-up, don't think I'll read it now.

109. lol! :D

110. I was wondering where the secrets like these were. I figured surely this is where all the "I want The Joker to rape me" people would go.

126. So what?

143. SAME. The reason I quit going to MLPArena and generally being involved at all with MLP fandom is because TOO MANY PEOPLE collect G3s. I hate it. I feel like buying up every single one of those new anniversary packs so that Hasbro will get the hint and start making REAL MLPs again.

144. I read Shade's Children in middle school and LOVED it, so I've been thinking about reading his trilogy for so long...

153. I really don't understand what people see in her. She looks 100% fake every time I see her, even in candid paparazzi shots. I'm convinced she's either had a shit-ton of plastic surgery or she's an android.

154. I found out long ago that the crappier and more cliche your work is, the more mainstream readers like it. I wrote an AWFUL novel when I was in high school, about 4-7 years ago, and was still getting comments on it as recently as a year or so ago. But all the stuff I wrote after that, which was much better? Completely unnoticed.

164. I agree. She is a shit actress with zero charisma.

I wouldn't take this secret as your final decision against the Time Travelers Wife. From what I remember, it does kind of face the issues against the problems the secret lists. And it's very well written and a good premise.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
104. TTTW is admittedly well-written and operates on a somewhat original premise, but honestly the story annoys me to no end, for pretty much the reasons you listed.

124. But importantly, why must people feel the need to complain about a free service?

136. And there's the reason the kink meme is the one section of that fandom I don't frequent. Eta: That said, having read the comments and seen a distressing number of people jumping up in arms and writing off the entire fandom based on the activities of this single minority, my eyebrow is now permanently raised.

149. To take this secret to its logical conclusion, I suppose I should go out there and stab some dude in the guts before writing a story about a murder or violence of any kind.

164. You know, the same could be said for many people in the acting business. That said, I cannot stand KK. She is the reason I always veto Pride and Prejudice on movie nights, even if I have to admit that it is an otherwise enjoyable film.

101. It would suck to live in Hyrule. You don't have internet. The only thing you can drink is milk. You can't go outside the city without being attacked by monsters. Your head of government's always being kidnapped. And there's always some kid in a green hat barging into your house, breaking your pots, and stealing your rupees :O

And should you actually accompany Link on his quest, there will be lots of falling and dying, Redead molestation, Wallmaster kidnapping, Bari electrocution, Goron crushing, Stalfos stabbing, and curses and spells and other bad things. And it's not like Link's a great conversationalist either.
