Agreed, agreed! I really didn't want to ship them because, hi, real people being portrayed in a really important film and so on, not to mention contradicting everyone's sexuality…though remembering how hard I ship Jefferson/Adams eased my mind on that, slightly (though 1776 is a far cry from Milk).

But yeah, I definitely ship them a little. Rock on, 102 OP, for posting the secret before I even made it.

110. I simply love that movie because they are a happily married couple. How many Disney movies have happily married couples? Usually, one parent or both parents are dead. The only one I can think of is 101 Dalmatians.

116. Pay no mind to them. The vast majority of fandom couldn't care less what religion you follow as long as you are nice and courteous to everyone. The only downside is, like in real life, the loudest people in any room are usually assholes. And they just happen to do most of the bashing. Ignore them and carry on.

111. I grew up kind of surrounded by "hick" culture (Appalachia-brand hicks, that is) and when I moved away I saw a lot of this sort of attitude. It's good that you realize there's a problem - now all you have to do is work past it, right?

126. Oh, for goodness' sake. If you have something interesting to say about the book, then why not just say it? Rather than run after you with pitchforks, the fandom will probably respond positively to someone who shares their love of the comic. ;) So long as you don't act like a stupid fangirl, there's a good chance no one will treat you like one. (Also, I don't know how Watchmen fandom looks on LJ, but out in other corners of comics fandom very few people will care when or why you finished the comic. The truth is, people are more likely to be shocked and appalled if they find out you haven't read it.)

But if you don't want to join the fandom, then don't! It's totally fine to love something without wanting to be "fannish" over it. I'm like that with most things anymore, honestly. :)

154. I can't remember a time when fandom wasn't like this, honestly. There will always, always be people who are more than happy to point out the flaws any given series (especially one that is growing in popularity). That said, Hetalia does have content that genuinely pisses some people off, and just as I think people should be free to like the series, I don't think others should have to sit on their hands and try not to harsh anybody's squee.

Here's the thing. Most of the time, non-religious people don't hate religious people. They hate proselytizing, holier-than-thou, my-path-is-the-only-right-path, discourteous, disrespectful, anti-gay/abortion/women/anyone my god hates assholes. 154. Fandom has always been judgemental. It's a sad fact of life. (sigh) The good news is, as fandoms go, the Hetalia one is actually remarkably accepting of all different reasons to fangirl the series. There are a few pockets who get their knickers in a twist about certain things (cough149cough) and, of course, all the wankers who turn up outside the community in places like this, but in the privacy of the community they have been, in my experience at least, quite friendly and welcoming no matter your reason.

"Plastic trophy wife" immediately brought images of "Stepford Wives" to mind. I kind of thought that's what Narcissa was. The actress in 158 kind of reminds me of an Umbridge + Narcissa hybrid. Like you said, it's not a bad thing, but she doesn't fit what I pictured Narcissa looking like.
