Genderbending is awesome. ♥ I wish more people took it seriously. I don't consider myself fully a part of a fandom for any series I pick up until I write something that involves genderbending (even if I don't post it and it lurks on my hard drive).

168 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-08 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

Like my secret says, I daydream about it all the time for every fandom I'm in (I just find it interesting even though I usually prefer the character's original gender)

I thought I might have been a bit of an oddball for taking it seriously, but others seem to agree :)

Now I can't stop thinking about his hair and how it seems to have turned into some kind of alien bent on devouring his face. Oh Amano, wtf.

105. You know, I actually agree, I don't see when that became genuinely accepted as canon, and honestly I don't give a damn about the actual characters from the actual story outside of Mytho. If i want to read about Fakir/Ahiru, I will read Fakir/Ahiru

131. Too bad there is barely any fandom, because no one can deal with the 70's style art, personally I like the look. It isn't really all that ugly, and it was made in freaking 1979 so of course it is going to be a bit lesser quality in animation from what we have now. (and Granted, I am not all that impressed with the quality of 00's animation anyway).

Yas is one of the greatest character designers in anime history. Also, he knows how to draw people over 50 very convincingly, in my opinion, which most character designers seem to have a hard time doing.

And actually, UC Gundam has a pretty big fandom internationally. It's just mostly comprised of men and people who aren't generally into slash (which I don't understand since there are plenty of attractive characters in the UC canon).

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
105. With (1), I think it's heavily implied in canon. The Knight's old sword is called "The Lohengrin Sword", and when you consider that there's an Opera by Wagner about a "swan knight" named Lohengrin...it's a pretty obvious reference, and it makes sense that it was his name.
That said, no, it's not canon, but it's far more canon than any other name you could possibly give him, so it makes sense.

On (2), I doubt that the actual book had a lot of detail on character backgrounds (and I think I've even said as much in my own fanfiction), but I think the actual characters/people in the story had more detail to them than the story did, because of the nature of Drosselmeyer's powers. It really seems like the characters that Drosselmeyer creates become *real people*, regardless of how flat he writes them. Real people have complex emotions and backgrounds, so I think they'd just spring up because of being made "real". That's just my interpritation, however.

I agree on (3). Tutu/Lohengrin doesn't make much sense to me. Tutu is explicately said to have been a footnote character that was in love with the Prince. The Knight doesn't seem to have really had any dealings with her--they're both focused on the Prince. I actually think it makes more sense for them to have fought over how to best protect Siegfried, if anything. And Tutu and Lohengrin (or whoever) are NOT the same people as Ahiru and Fakir, and I dislike it when they're written as being exactly the same--just comparing Tutu to Ahiru in the series shows there's differences.

...Sorry, I like thinking about this stuff and fanon. You're totally entitled to your own opinion on things and you have logical reasons for thinking the way you do, I just disagree on some of the points.

107. Yay for the BBC Miniseries!

126.I hope you'll be able to, since he's a famous person I'm 99% sure you never met in real life, and it's easier to have a deeper relationship with people when you actually talk to them and get to know more than their public personas.

153. I actually liked the movie, yeah. The books were better, but the movie had some HILARIOUS parts. (Plus, didn't the author work on the original script? So it wasn't like a stranger was trying to make something that seemed like what he would do.)

156. ...Ignorant anime fan is ignorant--is that the Warhammer-based fanfic I keep hearing about?? XD

161. I mostly agree. The real world is important, too, but the sense of community and truly intelligent, nice fans you meet at cons are so...refreshing. Particularly compared to the internet. Con still have some creepy fans, though, but even most of them seem to be genuinely TRYING to be nice...just a little social disfunctional.

153. In all honestly I'm no purist in this fandom (or just about any fandom) and I wanted to like the movie but I just... didn't, and regretted paying money to see it (and not walking out.) I hate admitting that because normally people who hate the new versions of canons that much drive me nuts.

I wrote a movieverse ficlet though because someone requested it, so I'm not a fanatic about it I guess.

141. But he's Benjamin Franklin. He used to take early morning sunbaths in front of his window in the nude because he thought they were healthy. He was brilliant and eccentric. Benny, man. How can you hate Benny?

163. Damn straight. I still don't buy the redemption story. I still think he was a double agent only the bio weapon was a coincidence. This is a guy who tried to kill Olivia before he was murdered, himself. He's not a nice guy no matter how much she wants it.

[identity profile] evewithanapple.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That movie was so BAD. When you can name at least two characters who have no relevance whatsoever to the plot, you know the writers haven't got a clue what they're doing.

107. I only read P&P fanfiction that's based on the book - not that it matters much since the BBC series was quite faithful - but yes, that movie was awful and in some aspects not much better than fanfic. That post-coital scene by the lake? Jane Austen must have been rolling in her grave. "They never had sex in my book!"

130. Could it be because he has the face of a Botticelli angel? (http://www.crosswater-systems.com/images/picture_botticelli_primavera.jpg) That's my reason, anyway, and your secret amuses me a lot because I basically said as much when I picked up KHR. I always have the specific Dino picture and the related Botticelli print on hand in case someone doesn't believe me.

149. You think Javier Bardem is hotter because he's Spanish, and Europe makes everything better.

168. Wow, girl!Soul and girl!Kid are really, really moe there. And genderbending can be done well, it's just kind of unfortunate that it tends to attract lots of bad fanfic writers.

107

[identity profile] ember-reignited.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
They... they what? I don't suppose there's any hope you're talking about Lydia and Wickham and not Elizabeth and Darcy? Or at least that it was at the very, very end, after they're married?

I've stayed as far away from that movie as humanly possible, so this is seriously my first time hearing this. DDDD;

107. I watched the first three parts of that for the first time on Friday! I can't wait to see the last. It's so much better than the Kiera Knightley version. ETA: I should add that I haven't actually read P&P at all, because I can't get into romance novels, so I don't read fic about it and therefore don't judge people based on which they prefer.

112. That is pretty awesome, I won't lie.

119. That would be epic.

125. Doesn't everyone? I mean, RPF squicks me so I don't read fic about them or anything, but come on. They make it too easy.

127. Hahaha. Giant tiger-doggy > wheelchair any day of the week

136. Condescending pet names are for the fail. Sorry you have to put up with it.

153. I thought it was boring. I really loved the character portrayals (other than Zaphod), but the plot didn't keep my attention. Also, I haven't been familiar with the series long enough to have nostalgia goggles. I read the books, watched the movie directly after, and then watched the BBC version.

157. Same here. Jack/Ianto has too much marriage/babyfic.

164. I probably would have done the same. I'm sad like that.

Oh god, someone else gets it. ;3;

A story: at one NDK, I got into an elevator with a couple of other girls, to head up to my room. A little known fact about me is that I'm terrified of elevators, but since they're such short rides and stuff, I can usually deal with it.

Well, this one got stuck. XD;

I was really starting to freak out, to the point of hyperventilating and sitting down in the corner with my head on my knees. These two girls, whom I'd never met before in my life, sat down next to me and comforted me, then busted out a few snacks from their bags and we had an impromptu "tea party" right there and then.

That wouldn't happen anywhere else, you know? That feeling of instant friendship. I love it. *u*
