Kevin was the only reason I got up in the morning. I plotted a secret relationship between him and Liza, moreso when she was pregnant. I pretended he massaged her back and feet between takes and stole brownies from the gift basket prizes during commercials. Everyone was one big happy family and when Liza left it just never felt the same. I still haven't gotten over my crush of Kevin (I started watching in grade 9 right when it started at six and managed to watch the first fifteen minutes before the bus. I'm third year at university and still daydream about co-hosting with him (I want him to steal me brownies when I'm pregnant)).

Look what we've got here, an eloquent troll. YAY! 8D
I may be joking here.Maybe.

I have read your responses to your other replies. You acknowledge that there are anime out there with emotional depth, and yet stand by your statement (I'd like to know why)? How about before judging an anime fan so instantly, you should care to figure out exactly what genre of anime they like first? It's ignorant to put a blanket statement on people who enjoy a certain medium of entertainment as immature when you know there are many layers to it underneath.

133 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-23 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
True, it is nice to get to know someone on more than a surface level, and if given the luxury, I do. But, like I said in the secret itself, my initial estimate of one's maturity level goes down. I'm always open to being proved wrong, but, as a stereotype goes, this one has tended to work well for me in the past couple of years.

For some reason, although I totally see Abby and Tony as Gibbs' kids, I have less of an issue with shipping Tony/Gibbs than shipping Abby/Gibbs. It's hypocritical, but Abby/Gibbs just skeeves me in an incestuous way.

Re: 172

(Anonymous) 2009-02-23 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely, Gibbs/Abby is just not for me. It creeps me out when they sort-of flirt in the show. Same goes for Abby/Tony too, way too bro/sis to make me ship it.

I get what the OP means though, I can see the basis for almost all the show's ships, even if I don't ship it.

Wtf...
Why do Zutarians give me more and more reasons to hate them? Jesus Fucking Christ, that isn't even FUNNY. It's making fun of a serious and sad situation.

And then they complain how people think they're delusional and petty?

You get what you fucking deserve, you Zootards.

Agreed. Very very much agreed. Zootards are an embarrassment to the entire Avatar fandom. Actually, this whole Zutara vs Kataang thing has been pretty embarrassing, tbh...

You know, when I first heard about these kids, I was a little worried that Zutarians might pull something like this.
Then I thought, noooo... they may be a bit loopy, but they're not assholes. I guess I was wrong :-)

You know what'd be funny: If it turned out that, over the course of the ATLA series, Aang turned 13, Katara remained 14, and Zuko turned 17. I wonder, would Kataang still be the "creepy, pedo ship"? Hmm... ~

103) The only thing I'll say about this secret is don't blame the girl. There are so many issues in the situation if you've read all the articles that saying "What the girl did to the boy is horrible," makes it worse. As for the fandom comparison, I will admit that when I saw that picture I knew this would come up. [I also laughed.]

122) I thought the same about Wuthering Heights. Then I plowed through it. If you got through Wuthering Heights, you can get to Edward. (Maybe Bella is a little to normal for you?)

149) I'm right there with you on Light. Hate his guts. I'm also right there in the likelihood the book's power would go to my head.

155) Re-watching the whole series again, the fact that it started with the words "Bad wolf" - that Rose actually put them there - made me laugh. Even if it did lessen the impact of Doomsday, changed what we all believed the Doctor would say if he had the chance, Rose established herself throughout time and space to bring the Doctor to her. Even if it looks like Rose is off with the "other" Doctor, they can always haul her ass back, or bring him to her, whatever~

167) You better be *pitchfork ready*

169) It's the lack of her super-thick mascara.

133

(Anonymous) 2009-02-23 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you are a real asshole. Let me clarify that, because I've read your responses to other people's comments and I find they make a great case for how you're a real douchebag.

You say you hate anime, but not because you are just prejudiced! Oh no, you've seen lots and you grew up, totally mature-like! What you are is a perfect example of the ex-fan, a miserable type of human being who delights in raging against something that they had to give up and to reduce their cognitive dissonance they've convinced themselves that it was all shite to begin with.

Your overgeneralization is one thing, but your condescension in the responses to other commenters makes you quite another. The last time I've seen such flawless conversation-choking techniques has been in the cultural appropriation debates and there's the kind of company you might want to avoid. Addressing people as "dear" like that, when you don't know them and devalue their point with a snippy yet unrelated retort, arguing semantics instead of their point, that's all the markings of a grade A troll.

You're not here to argue about anime's emotional depth (which is not even an argument, you're simply wrong), you're here to stir shit, and you've done it well. You even got people to apologize to you. Gosh, I think you came, didn't you? This post must get you hot and bothered like tentacle porn.

133 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-23 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I'm not even sure how to respond to this.

Firstly, yes--I am prejudiced, yes (which is not necessarily a bad thing; you're obviously prejudiced in the other direction, but prejudiced nonetheless. It's a neutral word), and I referenced my former experiences with the genre to qualify the statement.

As to the condescension, I will admit that, while I do use the term "dear" often to refer to others online and in RL, it does come off the wrong way in this setting. It was a poor choice.
As for being snippy, it's hard to respectfully reply to someone hurling off-base insults, and I'm only human. I do lose my temper.

No, I'm not really here to argue anime's emotional depth. I'm here to defend my right to use one's membership in anime fandom to initially pass a character judgment. The discussions have tended to center around my comment on depth, though, so I've responded in kind.

If I am a troll, anyway, wouldn't a response like yours be the best possible thing to come from this?

Stop giving them reviews, maybe they don't want you to review but hasn't grown a backbone to tell you. I know plenty of people who protest or show their dislike of someone by ignoring their reviews/posts/comments while enthusiastically replying to each and every other person such that all other commenters can see the poor person being ignored as they keep refreshing the page for replies. Someone I know who does this had the nerve to tell me through private IM all about how much they enjoy doing this to a mutual friend. Those jerks aren't worth your time, thoughts, or feelings.

133. You know, not all us anime fans watch anime exclusively. In fact, I can say with a great amount of confidence that the vast majority of us are interested in a wide variety of films, tv shows and movies. :/ I can understand if you don't like anime anymore, it's not hard to imagine people growing out of it or getting tired/bored with it etc. but to look down on people who watch ANY form of anime? That's a bit harsh bud.

136. LOL I loved that game! It was one of the only games I've gotten close to beating. XD That's really funny.

119. I WANT TO READ IT. A presidential race between Draco and Harvey Dent? Heck yeah. :D

130. Yes! Every time someone says "As you wish" I can't help thinking of The Princess Bride. ♥

Also, the script on that movie cover is pretty fabulous. :D You can turn it upside down! I don't know why this makes me so happy. :D (I'd never seen it before.)

138. I get the impression that you're not the only one who had a serious WTF at that message. I need to watch the movie again to see if I can figure out whether the movie was advocating for that, or if only the characters were. (Batman can be wrong.) But trust me, you're not the only one.

157. I don't think it's cowardly. People have been writing fiction under pennames for centuries, right? And if you want to separate your hot'n'dirty fic from the things your parents look up and show their friends, that seems completely normal and understandable. Go for it. Maybe you'll even end up less afraid once you get your writing out there!

167. YES. I don't really understand why people have to drag in people's real tragedies into their RPF fiction. To me that seems far more intimate and invasive than writing explicit porn about them! Just...no. (Not to knock you--everybody does stuff in fandom they regret later.)

169. Huh. Stuff like this makes me think how similar men and women actually are in appearance. We're mostly made of the same stuff, really.

Well, you asked for it. Here's my big fat fucking list of worthwhile, 'emotionally deep' anime. Forgive the lack of links, I'm too damn lazy to link 'em all, just go to Anime Planet or something. Of course, everything by Hayao Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon is a given. As a general rule, if there's a manga, it'll be better than the anime, but what can you do.

**stars by the highly noted titles that I think deserve more exposure

Appleseed (old version, newer, and newer sequel)
Argento Soma
Armitage III**
Baccano
Battle Angel Alita
Berserk
Black Jack**
Brother, Dear Brother**
Evangelion (a given, and a classic, and screw the haters)
Gankutsuou
Ghost in the Shell (TV, movies, all of it)
Grave of the Fireflies
Gunslinger Girl
Honey and Clover
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=161)**** FUCKING WATCH THIS IT'S AMAZING****
Kaiba
Key the Metal Idol**
Kino's Journey**
Macross Plus
Melody of Oblivion**
Mononoke
Mushishi
Nodame Cantabile
Now and Then, Here and There**
The Place Promised In Our Early Days
Pom Poko
Princess Tutu
Revolutionary Girl Utena**********(As shoujo-ai, as surrealism, as a commentary on shoujo and as a feminist anime it has yet to be topped. Also it's my favourite show of all time, shoot me.)
Rose of Versailles
Saikano
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Toward the Terra (movie and TV)**
Trigun
Twelve Kingdoms**
Wings of Honneamise
Wolf's Rain
Yukikaze

Of course, taste is taste, but I've been an anime nerd for long enough that I think I know my way around it - though I've not seen everything worthwhile, not by any means. Take this list as you will.

Edit: I feel like I should put an addendum on my Berserk and Trigun recommendations, as I think the manga is, in both cases, vastly superior to the anime, but both are well worth watching. In the case of Berserk, the first episode is complete WTF, they take out some rather vital character-related information and the ending is complete batshit. Also the animation quality is pretty meh. The Trigun anime is way more comedy-bent than the manga but easier to follow than the all-over-the-place manga art... though I feel the anime loses the tone of moral conflict that is so inherent to the manga, spoiler spoiler I won't say, but yeah, the Trigun anime is more lighthearted and 90% more idealistic and loses something for it. /tl;dr

May I borrow this list? I really need to find most of these to watch them.

Also, I've been looking for Rose of Versailles forever (French Revolution geek and desire to see the portrayals of the key figures is strong enough for me to sit through that travesty Marie Antoinette without making the wall too bloody at the amount of headdesking involved. Also, I would love to see the episode where Saint-Just says "Extreme? Me?" because it's bound to be as amusingly inaccurate as watching Black Book.)

Also, Cowboy Bebop (tv show and movie) should be added to the list, as should Akira (manga and movie) and Paprika.

For the record, I have no idea what's going on in that fandom, but I can take a guess from the comments. GRAH. There's so much wrong here, I could spit. Really, it's sex education's fault? Sounds like they didn't get any sex ed. Grrrrr. So. Much. GR. /political rants

125. lol Nothing wrong there. All sorts of people like bad fic.

128. I wouldn't say "troll", but you are in the vast, vast minority my friend.

130. *SQUEE*

... Now I need to watch/read it again.

133. (facepalm) See, 128. This is a troll. Or someone with troll-level communication skills. Either/Or, it's sometimes hard to tell. Even reading his/her responses doesn't work to clarify, since trolls can backpedal to cause more wank.

Word for the OP: There's a difference between disliking a generalized something and insulting the fans of an entire medium. The first is stupid (as generalizations tend to be), but not going to get as much ZOMG RAGE. The second deserves every bit of rage it gets. If you really meant to attack anime fans... well, I think I'm justified in thinking you're something of an ass based on this evidence.

Also a note on prejudice: Yes, you know what? We all prejudge. Positively, negatively—whatever, we have expectation. It's human nature. But the trick is to move beyond that because it's almost guarantees that the prejudice person isn't treating the people they judged as an individual but as the cardboard cut-out they expect them to be. Even positive prejudices do damage. You seem to think "everyone does it" = "it's okay". Secret: It's not!

146. Okay, I sort of disagree on this one, because I don't go with the "if you X, I think badly of you" pattern. I'm all for the case-by-case basis and not pre-judging as best I can. But in this case, it's really hard not to, since I've found that I tend to have a poor opinion of anyone who's against equal marriage rights. (This is another one I'm fighting not to pre-judge. *sigh*) At the same time, I won't rule out that someone can be against those rights and still write slash without being a hypocrite. Hell, I know some LGBT people who are against marriage rights. That blows my mind. And if they can be against it...

157. DO IT. Seriously. There's nothing cowardly in having some privacy in your life, and if your parents won't respect that then you have to take steps. Think of it like buying a vibrator, but since they go through your stuff you have to get a lockbox. They don't really want to know, and you don't want to tell them because it's private. So it's really just for the best.

Also, keep in mind that it can be dangerous to have your RL identity and your fandom identity too closely tied. People have lost their jobs (or not gotten a job, or lost friends, or lost family) over what a boss has found in their blog.

My LJ, my personal e-mail, all of it: completely locked away from work and 90% of family. My work/family are generally cool with it, and it's still locked away.

165. If you're only doing it to help populate the fandom, clean it up (betas are love) and post under a new pseudonym. Or you can just admit that everyone gets better and post it as yourself anyways. Then take that feedback and learn from it. If no one posted bad fic ever, there'd be a lot fewer good writers out there now.

171. I.... okay. No words. Really no words. I'm not sure if this is attempted troll or just trying to be a different kind of Joker fangirl... It's the "like I wanted to be" that really disturbs me most, I think. Who wants to be a lunatic killer...

More to the point, who admits it on F!S?

171 Which leads me to thinking... if they always wanted to be a murderer, why would they idolize a fictional murderer instead of a real one? Damnit, now I'm thinking again!

120. You won't tell these asswipes you left because you're disgusted by their treatment of your friend because you're afraid of drama? Being indignant on her behalf is all well and good, but it won't help her. Their behavior is revolting and they need to be called out on it. Fuck the drama.

137. Goddammit, I just know I'll remember this secret the next time I listen to that CD. D:

144. Lol, girlboner.

151. That's because it isn't. Like, at all.

154. I UNDERSTAND, OP, I UNDERSTAND.

132. When I first saw that picture I went like "Dude O_O". Young Stalin looking vaguely like my very gorgeous friend is rather baffling. :D

159. Flogging Molly fucking yeah!!! \o/
As a rule I find RPS/RPF somewhat disrespectful, but those guys are awesome and good fun. :)
