I'm not totally crazy about RENT, but not for that reason. They were promised free housing before their friend and landlord pulled a heel face turn, so suddenly being slapped with the bill for an entire year of rent they were promised they didn't need to pay is something to get upset about.

What I'm not a fan of is the big focus on Roger/Mimi. Any character who will push push push another character for sex and then let slip plenty of time later that they're HIV-positive, I'm not cool with.

126. Benny owned the building and had told them they could live there for a year for free (as they were friends and used to be roommates). Then he tells them that not only does he want that month's rent, but all the month's before that he had told them would be free and he wants it now. That's what that song is about. That and the fact that he's planning on tearing down tent cities to build condos. It's something that actually happened in NYC in the 80s and Larson incorporated his and his friends experiences into RENT.

Plus, the rent thing is only a part of the song. It's really about the shortness of life and the desire to leave one's mark on the world in the face of poverty and disease. Seriously, open your ears.

The writer of RENT was losing friends left and right to AIDS and they all lived an artists' life. Taking those experiences and the story of La Boheme (book and opera) he created RENT.

162 - You're my hero. I think that's fantastic.

I love that musical and the movie but stand against everything they promote in that movie (with the exception of AIDS research). I absolutely love the music though!

Anonymous comment because I'm a hypocrite and I know it.

114. But he is beautiful. It's an undeniable fact. XD
121. I played it for the plot, and also for the characters, but not necessarily for the romances that involved said characters.

[identity profile] pkbitchgirl.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
145 - it's bob picardo, what do you expect?

146 - your production of hamlet can't have been any worse than our production of Othello. We had only one guy on the course that fit the ethnical requirements for the roll. With four weeks to go he was only turning up for one of the four rehearsals we had every week. Our course tutor knew two other actors that fit the bill, they were both unavailable.

*The course tutor mentioned one of the actors had been in Fair City, but was unavailable because he was filming a movie at the time.

We were in Ireland, we don't have a large black population, let alone a large population of black actors. We had to go with an Irish guy....wearing make-up (I know this would be a serious no-no in the US).
The actor playing Othello was bald and was wearing a hat so he only put make-up on the visible parts of his head. Of course, during one performance he went on stage without the hat...

Another performance during the bed chamber scene (I was on the stage as Montano) the audience started laughing and I spotted one of my fellow actors furiously trying to kick a packet of cigarettes (which had fallen out of Iago's pocket) under the bed (at least it wasn't a mobile phone).

Another performance - there are two entrances onto the stage, on the front left of the stage and the right side of the back wall. During rehearsals for the fight between Cassio and Roderigo, Cassio drove Roderigo onto the stage from the LEFT. During the performance Roderigo takes it into his head that he's supposed to come in from the back entrance, of course Cassio's at the correct entrance which is the left, cue Pat's annoyed (and audible to the audience) hissed whisper of "Brian, over here!"

The biggest FAIL of the performance was an actor named Trevor. Everyone bar him was wearing costumes sourced off eBay, Othello was wearing a handsome doublet from Museum Replicas (I think?), we all had very nice linen-esque shirts and some ladies in our college knocked off tabards (based on a tabard (sp?) I had bought as a lot of three Stargate SG1 extras costumes off eBay) and I got pirate pants off eBay. The ladies' costumes were hired. All the male characters had tabards over clothes, whilst perhaps not being specific to the period in question, that would look convincing to the audience.
Trevor wore his tabard over JEANS AND TRAINERS AND A SCRUFFY TSHIRT.

I'd feel pretty safe in saying it probably ranked up there as one of the worst productions of Othello ever.

*After I watched the movie Mamma Mia I checked some of the actors' pages on imdb.com. The actor who played Pepper had only one other project listed other than Mamma Mia - Fair City.
It looks like he was one of the actors our course tutor tried to get, and I think its a damn shame he wasn't available because he's fucking hot (and a good actor to boot)

112 - The world needs some well-written KakaNaru, seriously. WHY DO ALL THE FICS MAKE NO SENSE. D:
OroKabu is fantastic, and I'm sick of the fandom's view of Orochimaru. I really like him; I wish people would stop painting him as some Michael Jackson wannabe.
And what the fuck is NejiGaara? D:

138 - It actually always makes me lol when TALL people cosplay really short ones. The only way that generally works in my mind is if they have someone even taller cosplaying with them. (Although, I cosplay taller characters sometimes, and I'm short, so I should probably stfu?)

Re: 138

(Anonymous) 2009-03-03 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
See, if you were short and you cosplay a tall character, you can argue that you're the childhood/chibi version. However, tall people can't argue the other way around.

Holy crap, I have MULTIPLE things to comment on!

121/159: HIGH FIVE, GUYS yeah I kinda feel that way sometimes, too =\

133. I really, really can't blame you. This comic manages to be so badass it's unhealthy. I mean... all that posing. It's just too hardcore.

143. Shame on me for only seeing the first episode, but I totally loved what I saw of him in there. He's a really cool guy, for a complete prick. Though it does make questions of sexuality confusing =\

120 & 162

[identity profile] bluerosefairy.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
120. OMG. I just watched "Crossroads", and I inexplicably started shipping them, too. RP's such a goofball, and AK is so serene - they seem such a great example of "opposites attract".

162. That show was totally my childhood! Ross was my crush and I'd dream up all these silly Mary Sueish scenarios. I'd totally make up the scariest stories I could think of in the hopes they'd be good enough to get him to sponsor me into the Midnight Society.

[identity profile] easilyentranced.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
101. Sonic just inspired me to eat chilidogs and love Jaleel White’s voice.

108. Hahaha, that’s awesome.

116. Uh oh, posted before someone got eliminated.

128. I don’t even know what that is, but it looks unbelievably adorable!!!!

ilu, Case. Hahaha!

109. YES! That movie is amazing. The first time I saw it was like, 8 years ago, and it is still my favorite movie! It's good to know that I'm not the only one who loves it that much.

136. All I can say is...that's a him?

103, 158

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
103) AMEN, SING IT SOUL BROTHER/SISTER.

158) I mostly agree, he is sympathetic, maybe tragic, and isn't a sociopath, but still probably narcissistic and megolomaniacal. Yet, he's my favorite. I'm most worried about his portrayal in the movie.

[identity profile] hannahclover.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
128. Best secret ever ♥

I have those too. I'm pretty sure everyone does, but they're hard to describe.
It's the light going through your eyelids. You're not going blind.
BUT OHMAN that episode freaked me out so bad.

Re: 171

[identity profile] caesaria.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I'm sure everyone's eyes aren't getting progressively worse. What the OP is describing doesn't sound like the normal kind of light dots that everyone has. If his/her eyesight is always getting worse it might be a cataract or something...

@OP: I'd see a doctor about this if I were you. Your eyesight is WAY too important to not take it seriously!

[identity profile] shelketuesti.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
148. Boys Over Flowers

Well, I portion my love for the latter one and the main couple XD

160. D no Arashi (/Meguro-san x Jun)

Same here. I thought it was nice for Jun that he finally found someone >D

[identity profile] akuma-divine.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
154. OMG HALLOWEEN TREE. I love that movie! =D

159. *waves arms around* I LIKE THE CANON PAIRINGS!! =D I mean, I like yaoi pairings from the game too, but it's just for fun. I don't take it seriously.

162. This must be the week of obscure/dead fandoms. I remember staying up late when I was seven to watch Are You Afraid of the Dark?. I love the back stories you've come up with =)

not!secret 1. THIS. THANK YOU. EVERYONE, GO LOOK!!!

[identity profile] icebilby.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
133. Fuck yeah, bro.

[identity profile] nobody-and-me.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm late to the party. ^^;

126. Props to the people who explained what was actually going on in the musical, even if they were largely ignored. >_>;

127. I'm all over Ike/Soren, but I kinda like Ike/Ranulf too. You can make a pretty good case for both pairings. A rank support endings anyone?

[identity profile] voodoo-buddha.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
102. OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!!!! CUTHBERT!!!!!!!

Ahem, sorry.

[identity profile] christ-chexx-4u.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
119 - they might as well, at times. especially when you realize that the l word is just the same characters with different genders. dont get me wrong, i love them both, but i almost didnt stick with the l word because of it.

126 - to be fair, the reason they didnt want to pay was because benny offered them a deal then backed out of it just so that he could make more money - i didnt see why they ever let him get away with it, without ever really even apologizing. but i get where youre coming from - that was my sister's first comment as we left the theatre.

162 - i totally wanted to know about their lives too! the segments before and after the actual story were always my favorite parts.

126

[identity profile] shinshokuinsane.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
126. I agree. It's not like buildings get built or maintained for free, so why should they be allowed access to them for as much? Trust me, I believe everyone has the right to a home, but people also deserve to get paid for what services they provide to others.

134. Sometimes, I fear I'll do the same. It's so damn catchy!

158. I agree. Isn't that the point of Watchmen anyway? I don't know; I'm not a fandom person.

126

[identity profile] immelmanturn.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I join you in protest!

Yeah, I get that it's about free expression and the human spirit and acoustic guitars and all that jazz, but Benny's still the only one I really agree with here. "But do you really want a neighborhood where people piss on your stoop every night?"

162

[identity profile] bonsoirdollface.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
162) YES

132

Oh god yes, and especially in the manga in Sapphire/Safir's case. Damn this secret for making me want to app him somewhere.
