Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-03 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
When do you get up in the morning? Do you need an alarm?

At what time do you go to bed?

If you had no job or other duties like children to take care of, what would be your ideal times for waking up and going to bed?

Re: Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-03 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ideally, I'd like to go to sleep at about 3am and wake up about 10am. I have been officially diagnosed with delayed sleep phase syndrome though. I hate that the world is run by motherfucking morning people who think not being a morning person is some sort of moral failing.

I wake up anywhere between 5:45 and 6:30 in the morning, but my alarm is set for 6:45 and that's when I actually get up. I try to be in bed by ten, but I usually don't fall asleep until midnight.

When we were on lockdown and I was working from home due to Covid, my wake up time was 10:00 AM and my bedtime was either midnight or 1:00 AM. I got the best sleep of my life during that time period and I really miss it, so those times would be my ideal for waking up and going to bed.

I force myself to get up at around 9am-10am, unless I have to get up earlier for work or some other appointment.

I usually try to get in bed by 10pm, unless I have to work late.

Re: Sleep schedule

Without any constraints (work, appointments during the day, etc.) I go to sleep between 10pm and midnight and wake up between 7-9am. But after waking up I'll spend 1-2 hours more in bed, just daydreaming, more if I get my phone and start reading fic.

But in reality, I have an alarm that usually goes off at 6am/7am/8am (depending on whether or not it's a workday and if I have an office or WFH day). Which I'll snooze because I just cannot get up right after the alarm goes, no matter how long I've been awake already.

Well, my idea is to bed between midnight and 2 am, up around 8 or 9. I pretty much naturally wake up then, unless i had a shitty no-sleep night.

I currently work overnight shifts, so i don't have an alarm to wake up on non-work days, and if i take a nap during shift days, I usually only sleep for two or three hours at the most, so plenty of time to get up and go to work in the evening without an alarm (unless the nap urge hits at like...4.30 or 5 then, yeah - alarm).

Re: Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-03 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In my 20s I went through some wild sleep patterns. Ideally, if I could live on a schedule as to my liking, I'd be up for like 28 hours and get 12-14 hours of sleep after that. I know people can't live like this in a healthy way, but I'm just saying, those days where I could stay up forever were days when I got a lot of shit done.
Realistically, wake up around 9:30-10:00 AM and go to bed around 2:00-3:00 AM.

I have an alarm set for 7:30 AM but I usually wake up around 8:30 AM. Bedtime really depends. Some days I go to bed at like 4:00AM, lately though, I've been going to bed around 2:00 AM. I wish I could go to bed earlier.

Re: Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-03 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
When I go to sleep, I have no idea when I'll wake up. Sometimes in an hour. Sometimes in four hours. If I'm lucky, six. One time I slept for 22 hours for no apparent reason; it was the best day of my life. It does depend on when I go to sleep -- if I fall asleep during the day, I'm much more likely to sleep longer. If I go to bed at a time like 10 PM or midnight, I'm almost certain to wake up an hour later and be unable to get back to sleep for another three hours or more.

I don't understand how anyone can function without an alarm. Even if I regularly woke up at exactly the same time, I wouldn't trust my body enough to bet my job on it.

Also I'm pretty sure I have irregular sleep-wake rhythm disorder.

My ideal was definitely when I was working nights. Going to bed around noon, getting up around 7-8pm to go to work at 10-11. Healthier and happier than I'd ever been in my life, even the chronic stuff mostly faded into the background for awhile.

Buuuut now I have a job that is basically bankers hours, but fortunately it's "flexible" and because of my health issues I work from home, so basically I wake up anywhere from 6:30am to 9am and just log right into work. Generally go to bed between 11pm-2am. (Later to bed does not necessarily correspond with later to rise. :/)

Thing is I can't fall asleep for an hour or two after turning the lights out and closing my eyes, and I wake up after about an hour every time, and it takes me at least half an hour to get back to sleep if I can at all. Which is why if I wake up at 6:30am I just log into work early. I know I'm not going to be able to get back to sleep and get a significant amount more sleep.

And that was before I started giving the bun in my room treats in the morning (he needed to put on weight, and he still needs to maintain). Now I have a bunny alarm. If I'm not up by 8:30ish he starts throwing his jingle ball around or chewing on the metal lamp base to make noise and wake me up. (On days off I just pick him up, put him in bed with me and snuggle him under the covers instead while I doze off. :P)

Re: Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-03 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
For the last month or so, I've been going to bed somewhere around 1AM, waking up around 8:30. Prior to the last month or so, it would usually be going to sleep around 11:45 or midnight, wake up around 8:30 (so if you can do the math there, I've been getting a fair deal less sleep). I do need an alarm; even with an alarm, I've always had a hard time getting myself out of bed, all of my life. I have a habit of just staying in bed until the last possible moment I need to get out of bed.

If I had no job or responsibilities... IDK. I actually really like the idea of waking up early, but in practice, when left to my own devices, my sleep schedule is usually like 1:30 AM to 10:30 AM.

Re: Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-03 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a severe circadian rhythm disorder, and up until last spring I tended to go to bed around 6AM and get up around 2PM, though at my worst I would have periods of going to be at 8AM and getting up at 4PM. It was miserable, but I couldn't change.

Last spring I got officially diagnosed with Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder, and the sleep specialist prescribed me medication and a sleep-entrainment routine to help manage my disorder. It worked uncommonly well for me, and I've now been getting up consistently at 9AM since last July.

I'd say I manage to get to sleep by or before 2AM most nights, though there are definitely times where I get caught up doing something and I just can't make myself stop, so I end up staying up later and paying the price the next day. Also, I have stress-induced insomnia, so if I'm stressed about something then I may well not sleep at all, or only nod off around 5 or 6AM.

I definitely need an alarm clock, yes. I can't even imagine not needing an alarm clock. God, it would be so wonderful.

I don't know what my ideal is. I'm so much happier now than I was when I was getting up at 2PM, and I would honestly love to push it even a bit earlier, but I don't think I can do that in a sustainable way that doesn't involve major sleep-deprivation. So I guess my current routine is as close to ideal for me as it really gets. *shrug*

If I could live by my own schedule without worrying about work or other duties, I'd stay up until 3-4am and wake up around noon-1pm or later. My ideal is 9-10 hours of sleep. I can function on a basic level as little as 5 hours, but it doesn't feel great and I struggle to focus.

Around 7. Don't need an alarm. If I'm not awake by 7:15, my cat makes sure I am, but I almost always wake up before 7.

Between 8 and 10.

Ideal would be 9AM and 10 or 11PM.

Re: Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-03 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no schedule, really... our store is open from 7am to 10pm (with the first people coming in at 6 in the morning and the last leaving around 10.30 in the evening) and our shifts switch around wildely almost every day. For example, tomorrow I'll have the 10-6.30 shift and then will be back at work at 7 on Tuesday. Then I'll have Wednesday off, have the 10-18.30 shift again, but on Friday I work 1-9.30 and will already back at work at 8 in the morning on Saturday.
Regular sleeping schedule? I don't know her. Daylight saving starting/ending? Doesn't bother me, it's all irregular anyways. (It has its pros and cons but right now our shifts really are very irregular and it's quite exhausting tbh.)

I think my ideal waking time if I had no work would be somewhere between 8.30 and 9.30.

Y'all are some serious morning people.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-03 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm reading most of these posts with question marks over my head. If you ask me, any time before 3:30 PM is too early to be up. I know I'm an exaggeration, but I do think anyone saying any time before noon is ideal is genuinely baffling.

Re: Sleep schedule

I was just thinking earlier today that I need a sleep schedule. As it is now I'm usually up between 8-9:30 in the morning, and usually in bed by 10PM. However, I have insomnia, plus I'm menopausal and also taking an antidepressant, and all that makes for some interesting sleep (or lack thereof). I should probably get my shit together and set a morning alarm for 8 and put electronics away by 9PM for a 10PM bedtime (no blue light an hour before bed, I've been told).

Unfortunately, I have to be up by 5am to get to work. Left to my own devices I sleep around midnight or 1am and wake up at 8 or 9.

Re: Sleep schedule

I get up around 5-7 (on any given day, it's between thise two hours. If I'm really tired I'll jolt out of bed by 7. If I'm following my schedule, 5:30 AM). Multiple alarms beginning at 4:45 and ending at 7:15. I knock the fuck out.

I go to bed anywhere between 11.30/12 and 2/3. It's fair to say most nights I'm sleeping by 1AM.

Omg looking at this I have a really shitty sleep schedule (and AWFUL time management skills-- I don't even have kids!)

My ideal schedule is pop into work at 4 AM, break by 10, done by 1 PM.

Even nicer would be waking up by 7/8, be at work by 10/11. Wrap it up by 6, and I can enjoy my evening. If I'm good and listening to my body, I'm sleeping by 10/9.39 lol

Re: Sleep schedule

On days when I don't have to be at work until 11, I often go to bed at 12:00 or 1:00 and get up at 8:00 or 9:00.

On days when I have to be at work at 9:00 I get up at 7:00, even if I still go to bed at 1:00, which sucks.

I had the last couple of days off and didn't get to bed until 2:00 last night and got up at 8:30 this morning.

I have an alarm set for 7:00 on 9:00 am days and 9:00 on 11:00 days, and mostly wake up in time to shut it off. If my alarm wakes me, I know I haven't had enough sleep.

Re: Sleep schedule

I generally go to bed around 10pm and wake up around 6. I have alarms set to 6 to "actually wake up", and 6:30 to "no, really, get out of bed, stop scrolling on your phone" and 7 for pill time.

When I was in high school, during the summer, I completely inverted my schedule. I went to bed around 7 in the morning and woke up around 4pm. I have a feeling that hasn't changed.

Re: Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-04 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
My sleep schedule was never really set. There was a rough timeframe of when I would try to go to sleep at night, although whether I was successful was another matter due to my insomnia that popped up during my teen years and has persisted to this day even with medication. And when I woke up was even more iffy, because it’s always been harder to wake myself up when I’m not ready, but not impossible. Although a lot of the times I wake up, I’ll be wide awake soon after, especially now.

But in the past couple of years, and especially this year, my sleep “schedule” is absolute chaos. I can’t sleep for long periods of time at night, even when I’ve stayed up all day. But I can sleep for quite awhile if I fall asleep during the day. I can’t predict or set a schedule for any of it, and it’s been a constant battle trying to get it to even resemble what a normal sleep schedule would look like. Often a losing battle. Time seems like a nebulous concept these days, and the terms “early” and “late” have become almost meaningless to me that I sometimes don’t know which of them applies to certain situations(not counting work and other things done on other people’s schedules, because those are almost anchors keeping me somewhat tied to the flow of days and weeks). I definitely have something wrong with my body, and an awesome anon gave me some great advice about what it could be, and it was nice to hear it’s not just me. Even if I of course wish nobody would have these kinds of problems.

My ideal time to go to sleep would be 9-11, and my ideal time for waking up would be 6-9. I never used to be a morning person, quite the opposite in fact. But back when I started naturally getting up at 6 instead of struggling to get up and feel fully awake before 10-12, I found I didn’t mind it. I actually quite liked it, that specific hour felt peaceful and nice to me, and I loved watching the sun rise. Now waking up at 6 would be sleeping in by a lot, if I even slept at night at all. So I’m still a morning person in that I no longer like night as much because I either associate it with being wide awake, or being eager to sleep through it so I can get to the next day.

This wasn’t a vent thread, I’m so sorry for the TL;DR!

I work overnights so,,, like noon lol. My sleep schedule gets so messed up whenever I have to do Family Things(tm) at like,,, 9 in the morning.

Re: Sleep schedule

(Anonymous) 2022-04-04 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I go to sleep at 12-1 and wake up at 7-8. I work from home and do not have children, so it's my actual comfortable sleep schedule. It moves a bit though. I tend to wake up with a sunrise, so at winter I stay the nights and at summer I wake up ridiculously early.

People saying that world run by morning people are wrong though. World is run by people who think that you are not human and do not need sleep. And sun cycle. I know it's not the same, but I had a lot of shit from people because I am not active in the evenings. And I am expected to work nights, because I am from cReaTiVe fIeLd.

Re: Sleep schedule

My sleep schedule varies pretty widely by season. I have SAD and just want to hibernate in winter, so I go to bed around 9 p.m. and wake up around 7 or 8 a.m.

Conversely, in summer it's a struggle to get enough sleep and not wind up a strung out and jittery mess. The best solution I've found is to go to bed around 7:30 or 8 p.m. so that my inevitable 4 a.m. wakeup isn't too exhausting.

Spring and fall are when I have the most "normal" sleep schedule, going to bed between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. and waking up around 6 or 7 a.m.

(Though I should say that the above times are the ideal, and if I'm really engrossed in a book or computer game, I might stay up a couple hours past my bedtime. When that happens in winter, I'll often sleep in the next morning. The rest of the year, I'll wake up at the usual time and just be a bit tired.)

I set an alarm on workdays, but I usually wake up before it goes off, except for in winter when it's an absolute necessity to get me up on time.
