...isn't that kind of like saying that women - and gay women in particular - have no grounds to object to lesbian porn, despite how degrading and unrealistic it is, and how much it contributes to a negative culture of objectification of homosexuality as being there purely to titilate straight people?

I'm not saying slash fanfic and lesbian porn is the same thing... some slash is perfectly respectful and realistic. But I think if there's a fic that is blatantly unrealistic, steriotyped and clearly just there as fap material for fangirls, a gay man - or anyone, really - is perfectly within their rights to object to that. I don't see how women objectifying gay men and appropriating their sexuality as a tool for their fantasies - putting no further thought into the subject matter than OMG HAWT - is any better than men doing the same to gay women.

Object all you want. But they make lesbian porn the way they do because men think it's hot. If you want lesbian porn that appeals to lesbians, find a lesbian to direct it. It's no different than how harlequin romance novels are directed mostly towards women because that's their target audience, and James Bond romance, as the only (poor) example I can think of, are directed mostly towards men. It's a different audience, it's a different feel. Learn about economics and advertising.

tl;dr - When something is made, the creator has an audience in mind, often (but not always) similar to themselves. It skews the views and realism because that's what the MASSES want.

Nice stereotyping you have there. How about me, I've had relationships and I still agree with the OP.

Whoops.

The point that you conveniently missed is that "men don't need to matter". If Real Gay Men(TM) matter to you, it's fine. But IT'S OKAY TO HAVE FANTASIES that are *gasp* NOT REALISTIC. For many, slash is not written for Real Gay Men(TM) or even Real Gay Men(TM) in mind. You don't enjoy it? Whatever. But it's still just a fantasy and people should be fucking allowed to enjoy it without others harping on how they're doing it wrong because it's not realistic and real men are not like that. Yes, we know. We don't care.

134. Nostalgia, fuck yeah.

135. Eugh, you poor thing. Better luck in future team-ups!

138. You can also do this with any other immortal/long-lived/time traveling character. Just puttin' that out there.

146. Do it anyway. That shit ain't right.

150. Yeah, because all mothers are just soulless baby-dispensing drones trapped in dreary grey half-lives of drudgery and emptiness, right?

doing it wrong. Buy ticket for another movie. Watch other movie. Sneak into DBZ movie (but don't get caught!). Voila.

130. I'm not sure how I feel about this secret.

On the one hand I am with you when it comes to women and their sexual fantasies. I mean, men have been turning us into sexual objects/fantasies since forever right? So it's only fair that women get a turn.

HOWEVER, I personally don't like reading slash fic that cuts and pastes stereotyped female behaviour onto one or both of the men involved. I think it is insulting to both genders as it suggests that women act a certain way and that straight men wouldn't act in certain way. Not to mention it is stereotyping gay men too.

[identity profile] neonstilettos.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)

This is exactly what bugs me about that secret. Not to mention it sometimes implies a weird, borderline misogynistic aversion to female sexuality in which women's bodies and women having sex are too yucky to write or think about, so the writer projects themselves onto an overly feminized male.

Disclaimer: I totally recognize that the aforementioned is NOT always the case, and that there are some female-body people who identify as male, or FTM transexuals who identify as male, and it would make perfect sense for these male-identified people to project onto male characters. I don't think this is the same as heaping stereotypically feminine traits onto a male character for the sake of wish fulfillment, though.

"A book can't ruin a movie, but a movie can ruin a book."

I agree with this completely. I've tried to explain this to people, but no one ever seems to really get it. I also have avoided reading books that I know will eventually become movies. Haven't finished the Harry Potter series or the Narnia series for this reason. I personally feel that having seen the movie first actually makes me enjoy a book more. Anyway, thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one!

106) I've never seen this documentary, but I know about the God Hates Fags people, and I wish that all of them would leave. I can only imagine what a nightmare life must be to be this incapable of rational thought and constantly being bombarded with messages of hate and judgementalism. Those kids must be terrified to sneeze the wrong way.

130) One persons squee is another person's ew. But yeah, it's really annoying when people insist their way is the only way fandom can be enjoyed.

135) Dude... that sucks. Writing fic should not be a chore. I hope in the future you will feel strong enough to speak up for yourself and not let someone else bully you into writing things you don't want to.

149) Okay, honestly, is there any terms for robot sex that doesn't at least initially cause you to giggle? He put his dip-stick in her oil pan?

153) One of the many reasons I avoid learning about the actors of my favorite shows. I don't want their personalities tainting my feelings towards the characters and shows I like.

156) Ugh. Being able to write is not an excuse for being a douche. There are tons of people with talent in fandom. On the other hand, I know first hand that there are some people who seem to think that popular writers/artists need to hold themselves up to some higher level of ettiquette than everyone else in fandom. They are just people and they have the right to fart around and enjoy themselves without people looking for things to be mad at them about.

TL; DR: BNF's should be treated like everyone else. (Most actually prefer that).

127 - YES. IAWTC, though I'm not really all that huge on the Marauders anyway. I mean, it's obvious he's the character JK never wanted to make a role model OR a archetype bad guy... and in a way, he's pretty... well, human. And yes, kudos to you to spot that against convention \o/

103. Haha, what? You don't have to like the character or the ship or the plot development, and frankly I don't, but going into a desperate fight for love despite having no chance at winning has "noble" written all over it. Hello, are we not reading shounen anymore?

109. You know, C.C. is kind of Lelouch's "queen" in some sense. Like the witch-queen to his warlock-king, or whatever it was they had going on in the story. Because they were partners? My feelings about her fluctuate from time to time: sometimes I'm annoyed that so much in the story had to be about her, but I know it's because the creators needed a character to fulfill this role and connect those plot threads. Couldn't be helped.

130. There's got to be some kind of balance. There's being willing to let things slide for the sake of enjoying a story, and then there's being unable to enjoy something because it is too masturbatory, too obviously someone's personal fantasy. Hot porn does not make up the entirety of slashdom; sometimes when I read something I want to relate to the characters as well, to feel as though people like that could exist in the world.

I may dislike Sirius, A LOT...but I'm going to quote him because this is exactly how I feel: "I would DIE rather than betray my friends"

I will admit that I like the way Jo wrote his character, it speaks to her that I can feel so strongly about how much I hate him for what he did. Also, yeah, I don't like it when people make him out to be a complete ass during the Marauder era either.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 04:24 am (UTC)(link)

107- Worry less about the felony, and more about the child. Think about your own kids, if you have them. There are better reasons to be disturbed by your own desire to fuck a little kid than the fact that they'd put you in jail. You're the least important person who would get hurt by it.

Not to be all serious business about fandomsecrets or anything, but really.

164- I'm not Sam's biggest fan or anything... his attitude toward life doesn't appeal to me. But the "family that survives impossible odds" aspect of the show is what I love best about it, so I wouldn't want to lose any member of that family, no matter how obnoxious he is. :P Lots of us have annoying people in our lives. It's realistic.

The only way I'd ever want Sam killed off is if the writers intend for him to keep his omnipotence for more than a few episodes. I don't think I could stomach a show where they keep building up a threat only to have him dispatch it with the flick of his hands. Like I said, I like the overwhelming odds against our heroes. ;)

(Anonymous) 2009-04-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
103:

Seriously, OP, why are you still watching the show? If this one character pisses you off so much by just this one thing that she does, I somehow doubt that you'd take the rest of the series well. And with that logic, why expose yourself to more stress than necessary?

If you've got a problem with Hinata because she's a timid little do-good, which sounds like your reasoning, than how can you complain when she makes strides in the direction of growing stronger? Yes, it was stupid. Yes, she could have been killed. No, there was no guarantee that it would work. But it did work, at least to some degree, and she didn't die. So in the end, it did have a positive outcome, right?

So get off your high horse. You can't hate a character for behaving one way, and then hate them more for not being what you hate, anymore. More to the point, people are what they are. Hinata is, and always has been, powered by her feelings for Naruto, since the series started. So, quit bitching. It won't do you any good, it won't change anything. And honestly, how is this a secret, anyway? "OMFG I HATE HINATA. I HATE HER MORE WHEN SHE'S BEING SELFLESS." So you hate someone, so what?

God, OP, grow up.

130 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-04-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I have just understood why people troll. This has been massively entertaining.

I don't care when men have objectifying fantasies about lesbians; it's when their objectifying fantasies impinge on their interactions with real women and their ability to treat real women like people, that I have a problem.
I apply the same standard to female slash fans.

I do LOL at the way in slash everyone's always ready for buttsex any time, anywhere, at a moment's notice, but at the same time I find that hot. I do not think increased realism on this subject would make for a better reading experience.

I personally don't enjoy reading fic with feminized men who are secretly teenage girls. But nonetheless the "REAL GAY MEN ARENT LIKE THAT" critique is tedious and point-missing.

And I don't have a problem with male slash fans; but I do notice the extent to which fandom kowtows to them and gives them disproportionately more weight in the fandom. And I have a problem with that. I like that this is a female dominated space. There aren't many of those in the world.

And I don't agree that slash is "about" the men we're slashing. They're not real.

143. I love Sheldon/Penny but would never want it to become canon, I don't think it would be a good direction for the show and the actors (at least one of them) has said it would be a horrible idea.

163. Yeah, them dating had an expiration date, but we know from the nature of the show that they remain lifelong friends, close enough that Ted's children know her as Aunt Robin. So, in that way, they DON'T have an expiration date and no matter what happens between you and your S.O. it doesn't mean the love stops with the dating.

163. (spoiler alert!) Kate needs to get it on with Ben's dad. How messed up would THAT be?

143.] BUT IT WOULD KICK ASS! Y/Y?

LOL, I agree that it would be a difficult direction for the show to head in *at this time.* I really do think that if they handled it properly in a few seasons it could be pretty awesome. *shrug* It might never go there, and it might suck if it ever did, but I still love the idea. ^_^ [Even if I'm half-afraid of what it might do to fandom.]

130. Yes and no. I agree with what you're saying about female space and the importance of women having a space where they can explore their sexual fantasies on their own terms. I don't that means we should discount the voices and feelings of gay men entirely, though.

149. OMGLOLOLOL @ that image. Epic stop sign penis is epic. That said, I avoid sticky!fic like puke on the sidewalk. That's not why I'm in the fandom, at all.

150. Since when is deciding to marry and have children such a deplorable act? Some women find real fulfillment from that, and it really isn't anyone else's place to condemn that decision.

169. I didn't care for the ending of the series, but I think the God-concept the writers had going was pretty interesting. I believe in God too, so some of it really resonated with me. Most of the stuff in the finale just seemed like hand-waving to cover bad/inconsistent writing, though.

Thank you, that sums up my feelings about this pretty much exactly.
