108. That woman can put one one hell of a performance. American Idol, last night? PURE AWESOME pants creaming.

150. Dude there are a lot better female RPGs characters then Lulu. Trust me on that. Look into Seth Balmore from Lost Odyssey, and there you go. She beats the hell out of Lulu. Final Fantasy can't put out a respectable female character if their lives depended on it. They just can't. And if they do, the make an emo bitch in a bright pink mini skirt.

All of Jared Padalecki's characters are annoying to me. Several times I wanted to throttle him in Gilmore Girls.

Okay, here's the thing.

You know how old Superman is? He's been around since 1938. Something made him appealing so much so that he lasted that long. Maybe, just maybe, it's not his personality that appeals to people. I think your definition of why somebody can love a character is narrow - people love all sorts of things that don't have personalities. Perhaps Superman is less of a man than a symbol. The point is: don't judge people on who/what they can or cannot like.. I wouldn't blame you for disliking Superman, personally I'm not that much of a fan either. But don't blame the fans.

Secondly! Maybe he does have a personality. Maybe the personality is subtle - not every character's going to be an outrageous flanderization (I personally love crazy outrageous characters, but I like "normal guys" too). And where are you basing this from, anyway? No really - I'm curious. This dudes been in so many different adaptions, been through so many different writers, each one writing him slightly differently... He's had so many different personalities that they all sort of blend together and the subtleties are lost.

But maybe this is a little TL;DR for a fandom!secret. After all, it's easy to get offended by a sentence, but I'd probably be less irritated if you wrote a few paragraphs saying basically the same thing. It's all about explaining yourself.

THIS. Superman is a symbol. There has to be someone strong enough to always do the right thing. There are plenty of tortured heroes. It doesn't make him interesting or complicated like Batman or Wolverine but it's made him an icon.

Batman has a personality! He's a total douche a lot of the time!

...Wait. (http://superdickery.com/)

Clearly, the only way we can solve this is angry Bat/Supes mansex.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
130. Fair enough, but the lack of realism is driving out quite a few of those female voices, who are attracted and would like to fantasize about more realistic men, as opposed to a horde of teenaged, long-haired manorexic Gackt clones whose two emotions are Angst and Wibble.

...In fact, that's the reason I and many of my peer group stopped reading official Yaoi/BL materials altogether and went back to good old TV/video game slash. That and the whole nauseating "seme" and "uke" thing.

132. Fandom twitters might be the only twitters I could stand - you may have a point.

150. I know you're probably a troll, but on the off chance you aren't, I would recommend that you stop playing Squaresoft games.

155. Augh, Lisa :/ I agree. I still feel terrible for being unable to save her.

Heartily agreed re. yaoi/BL fandoms. But it really is just a matter of how we're wired; some women like the long-haired manorexic wibblers, and some of us prefer gritty testosteronefests about grown-ups doing grown-ups. I've talked to women who are really turned on by the idea of seme/uke, often because they feel it speaks to the idea of having more genders than just male or female - whereas I cannot stand it and find it as squicky as any other kind of enforced gender performance. I continue to believe there's enough room in fandom, as a broad enterprise, for all of us; we all find our own niches.

129. Ha. I love when people have to show how hip and trendy they are by dissing on the superheroes who aren't uber-conflicted and flawed and gritty. You might as well say Luke Skywalker has no personality. Supes is supposed to be the kind of mythical hero that's greater than us and not directly relatable, but even given that he has plenty of very human moments. /soapbox

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Are we as humans still having this argument, trying to make all porny fiction out to be high and noble? People can claim they're writing as loftily as they like, but the minute you introduce Tab A into Slot B - of any stripe - you've introduced sexual fantasy. It doesn't matter if you're Nora Roberts or Vladmir Nabokov. It doesn't really even matter what your point was in doing so: Somebody, somewhere, wrong or right, is fapping to even the highest literary mental masturbation. The only way to stop it is for nobody to ever write sex again. And wouldn't that be depressing.

...Err, yeah, because if a woman has a child that means she's 'lost her spark' and can't possibly inspire anyone ever again!

Do you think that about male characters too?

A lot of canons do treat male and female parents very differently, but afiak (staying away from X-2 kthnx) both Wakka and Lulu are written out by having a baby. That's getting it right. And if you're judging female parent characters more harshly to how you judge male ones, DIAF.

My icon is the most inspiring female game character of all time, and she has a son :D

Not that I disagree with anything you have to say, but the Boss didn't exactly give up her career on account of it. And probably wouldn't have, even if things had turned out differently.
