What Mandela effects do you suffer from?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I have two

1) I distinctly remember George Harrison dying Dec 31 1999, thinking to myself what a horrible date to die.

2) I remember Don Cheadle winning the Oscar for Hotel Rwanda, to the point where whenever I see his name, my mind goes "Oscar winner Don Cheadle."

I just had one the other day! I saw Sally Struthers was in the new Ted Danson show, and got very confused because I could have sworn she died about two years ago. That there was a whole news story about it and everything.

god, that's weird. I get George's death month and day right but I keep thinking he died in 1998.

(Note: While this does fall under the topic of politics, I am not opening a discussion about how awful the healthcare situation is. I am just mentioning something I was mistaken about.)

For weeks, I swore that it was "Deny. Delay. Depose." but nope! It was definitely "Deny. Defend. Depose."

Years ago I made a secret about a scene in the first Percy Jackson book and how it made it impossible for me to like the ending of the book. Everyone else informed me that scene did not exist. They were right.

The probable explanation is that it was an actual scene in another book I read and I mixed it up as being in Percy Jackson, but I could still swear at the time I was reading it made me hate the ending. The alleged scene involved gnomes and a stop at a gas station where they confirmed that if you got turned to stone, you weren't dead, you were still alive just unable to do anything forever because you were stone.

Original works you read/saw *after* seeing an adaptation

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2025-01-02 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What TV show, movie, book, or other media inspired you to check out the original work it was based on?

Was it what you expected? For better or for worse?

Did it change your opinion of the adaptation?

[Brought to you by my rewatch of the Lost in Adaptation series on YouTube]

Anne of Green Gables and LotR stand out to me. Both cases I was bored and never finished because I felt the adaptations were so close I wasn't really getting anything out if reading the books and I already enjoyed the movies. Very controversial opinion for both highly beloved books so not something I usually share!

HP probably. No opinion on the writing but the movies felt more magical (at least at the start).

Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows.

I watched the Netflix series and had never read the books, I knew of them but had never been interested. But after the show was cancelled I decided to check the books out of my local library to give them a read and see the differences because I enjoy noting changes between mediums, whether I think they were unneeded or worked. I just find that fun.

And overall I preferred the show characters for the first series, especially Mal, in the books he's an asshole and I couldn't stand him but I like show!Mal. For Six of Crows I had the same likes and dislikes, enjoyed all of the characters bar Mattias who I hate with a burning passion in both canons but the story of SoC is more fun that S&B for me.

Overall though I like the books and show near enough the same but liked how the show blended them together, s2 sadly isn't as good as s1 but I think they kinda knew they weren't going to get renewed so threw a lot of show stuff in that season to it's detriment. I still enjoyed the show though but the lead-up in the books is better paced.

Les Miserables, Lord of the Rings, Hunch Back of Notre Dame, Gone With the Wind, probably others.

I usually appreciate the book/original more but the easier to access adaptation helped get me interested in the original in the first place.

HP

I remember thinking, oh this looks fun, and is that Alan Rickman HELLO. And there went the next 14 years of my life.

It was fun getting into it when there were already 4 books out.

Interview With A Vampire. When I finally read the book, I found it to be incredibly boring. The other Vampire Chronicles books were way better.

I watched an Anne of Green Gables cartoon on PBS that made me want to read the books. I ended up liking both.

I actually read LOTR after I saw the movies. I tried to read it as a kid because I loved the Hobbit, but I was never able to finish. As an adult I love the books, but I get why kid me didn't love them as much.

I distinctly remember getting into HP after watching the first two movies.

Slow Horses/Slough House

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried to read the first book before watching the show and bounced right off.

After watching all four seasons, I went back to start reading the books. I think they have nice nuances and character insights that the show doesn’t have time for.

But I also think the books are bleaker and the characters are less endearing. I needed the show to win me over enough that I actually cared about them.

I read the Martian after seeing the movie. The book was so much better, especially the ending. Now I get annoyed at the ending of the movie.

I watched the original Pet Sematary then read the book. I adore the book, and the movie has its own charms.

The Pet Sematary remake (SPOILERS), with the weird zombie ANGLE? Garbage.

Well then

I am on my way to a gig and stopped to get gas and just realized I wore my slippers instead of changing into shoes. Just going to have to play it like it was a deliberate fashion statement.

Talk amongst yourselves.

Inspired by #1 but not really

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If you were a dragon, and had to choose one thing to hoard, what would it be?

It must be physical things but the term 'thing' can be loose. Have a big hoard of scientists if you want, go wild.

Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Had a plan with my parents to go to a restaurant and maybe visit a gallery before it for my mother's birthday. So of course my father rolled up an hour too late to plausibly go to a gallery.
And I would be sort of okay with that because I am pretty sure he has some time blindness. But he goes all "why? I want to go to a gallery? Maybe for just an hour??" 🥺🥺 Like a fucking toddler. And it always gets me *sighs
