People who like cottagecore in a non-fash way...

(Anonymous) 2026-02-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me what you enjoy about it! To me, the main appeal is how cozy it looks. A lot of contemporary architecture and styling looks... well, like a museum. A museum that hates colors other than white, black and gray. I like soft fabrics and fireplaces and bookshelves and kitchens that invite you to sit at the table and have a cup of tea while you're waiting for that batch of chocolate chip cookies to be ready. I also love the look of English cottage gardens.

Re: People who like cottagecore in a non-fash way...

(Anonymous) 2026-02-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I like how cozy everything looks too! From the bookshelves to the tea cozies to the gardens. It's an ideallic lifestyle that sings to me of slow living that is so different from my 8:30-5 work life.

Re: People who like cottagecore in a non-fash way...

(Anonymous) 2026-02-21 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It reminds me of my childhood-- in part because it calls to mind the books I read and the daydreams they gave me, makes me think of Anne Shirley, of Frog and Toad, of Laura Ingalls Wilder... and in part because my grandfather built a cabin in the woods, where I spent large swathes of my childhood, dreamily wandering the woods and contemplating the fish pond, watching the birds or spotting a deer, hazy memories of my grandparents' garden, or the baking they did in the kitchen, the house full of my grandmother's little treasures-- crystals hanging in the windows, her hand-embroidered wall hanging, the art she collected, the tea parties she would set up for all her grandchildren, allowing us to use precious china cups with dainty painted flowers...

It's the foraging I learned a little about, it's the times my mother took up baking bread or making pasta, it's learning cross-stitch (and failing to learn to knit) at her knee, it's my other grandmother's collection of handmade afghans and embroidered pillowcases and well-loved roses, lemonade from her lemon tree, iced gingerbread. It's the hours I could spend reading, or exploring the creek behind our house when I was in 3rd-4th grade and we lived in a remote little town where our laundry dried out on a line and a fat tabby cat walked out of the woods, onto our porch, and chose us (me)-- and it's finding My Neighbor Totoro in the video rental store after moving to a new... not even 'town' out in the wilderness. It's learning to make butter with nothing more than heavy cream, a pinch of salt, and a jar.

It's... it's the romantic version of a life I grew up with rather than a realistic one, maybe-- but it's the life I was living when I met my best friend of nearly thirty years, the life I was living before the deaths of my grandparents, my dad. It's the life I was living before the pressures of adulthood! And it was a life where we were poor but it didn't weigh on me the same way it weighs on me as an adult, one who hasn't walked in the woods in a long time, and hasn't had a tea party with all my cousins in longer.

But, while I still can't knit, I do crochet now. And I bake. And I have a coffee mug with strawberries on it that makes me smile. And I try to carve out time to read the way I read when I was a kid. I have a Frog and Toad tee shirt that never fails to get compliments at the farmers' market or the library, where I can at least briefly feel like I'm part of the local community (and, where the farmers' market is concerned, where I can get produce locally, and little baked treats or jams). I may not be able to grow and make all my own food, but I like being able to buy it directly from the people who are growing it!

I like being able to slow down and breathe, which is not always easy and my health is so heavily exacerbated by stress. Which... makes it all the more crucial to slow down and breathe and give myself opportunities to be cozy, to be surrounded by soft things or cute things while I recuperate from the big, fast world.

Re: People who like cottagecore in a non-fash way...

(Anonymous) 2026-02-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
That's part of the appeal to me, too. I like the idea of life being a bit slower, more time and room to breathe, do leisurely things that aren't productive in the monetary sense but add to your quality of life, stuff like that. I don't have the time or energy to do much more than work, then try to eat something that isn't junk food and the struggle with insomnia even though I'm tired, only to repeat it all the next day.

I do bits and pieces. I cross stitch! I used to bake more often, and miss it. I lack a green thumb but last year I managed to grow basil in a big pot outside my front door. I drink tea, and appreciate buttered toast a lot more than I ever imagined that I would when I was a kid. And I pick up the occasional tea cup and saucer for a collection that rarely gets used because none of my really good afternoon tea party attending friends live close enough. :(

I like it in a fash and general lifestyle way, and it basically comes down to the fact that it reminds me of my grandma and my aunt, both of whom I lost too young.

Windows 11 changing the start menu

(Anonymous) 2026-02-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't had a Windows update lately, and yet my start menu (Windows 11) has changed in the past day or two?! I low key hate it. It's not necessarily bad, but it's DIFFERENT, and I didn't ask for or consent to DIFFERENT. It irritates me. STOP CHANGING THINGS JUST FOR THE SAKE OF CHANGING THEM. LEAVE IT ALONE. ASK ME BEFORE YOU REARRANGE MY SHIT.

Misophonia

(Anonymous) 2026-02-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This is truly such a petty thing, but.

I have misophonia pretty bad, and the number one most common thing that gets me is eating/mouth noises. Something like ASMR where they are eating just sends me into an absolute, total utter rage. One of my coworkers sometimes just makes these weird mouth noises and I have to walk away from her when she's doing it because it makes me want to die.

But for some reason, my BIGGEST trigger is the sound of my mom sneezing.

I have never said this to her because obviously she can't help sneezing, but oh my. The sound of her sneeze takes me from chill to absolute rage monster holy shit someone please kill me right now now now, immediately.

She does have a loud sneeze, but so does my dad, and his doesn't bother me. I think the thing with her, is that she draws it out. Instead of ACHOO! and done, it's like, aaaahhhhHHHHHAAACCCHHHOOOOoooooaaahhhhuuuggggggghhhhh

And then if it's multiple sneezes in a row, it just gets progressively worse. It's so loud I hear it clearly in my room with the door shut, and it's so awful. I would NEVER say anything to her about it but I just reeeaaallly wish she would muffle it a little bit, instead of seeming to intentionally being as loud and dramatic about it as possible.

Re: Venting Thread!

(Anonymous) 2026-02-20 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
i truly despise how normalized and accepted drinking and driving is within our culture. it makes me so sick. i don't know if it's just where i live (a rural area nearish to denver co) but it's just so accepted here. i have a coworker who has charges and a court date coming up, it just came out with a whole bunch of drama, and our main boss was just like 'lol well it's not that big of a deal i do it too' and i'm so mad about it. fuck you dude. just fuck you.

I can't find a single fandom place that is free from haters for the fandoms I want to be in right now. Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who. Go in a group for one part of the thing, you still see a million hate posts about the other part of that thing (Group for a specific Doctor hating on the recent ones, group about Deep Space 9 hating on Academy/Discovery, OT group hating on ST, PT group hating on ST, ST group hating on PT).

It just gets so tiring. I'm here to love on this thing. Why are you posting about this other thing that is off topic? Can't we just stick to what were are here for?

I bet I have the pettiest one tonight! I love the salsa from Chili's. I get a meal to go from there, and they give you this great big bag of chips, and a little cup of salsa. I'm done with the salsa and I have over half the chips left, even though I tried to use it sparingly. I could easily use 3 full cups of salsa with the amount of chips you get.

Oh well. The chips are good enough to eat on their own too, or maybe I'll buy some cheese to dip them in.

Family dysfunction.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-21 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that nobody wants to stand up to my asshat Boomer dad. He's free to say any mean, stupid thing he wants but you can't say a single thing to him (including "You're wrong") or he'll throw this old man tantrum about how he deserves respect and the younger generation doesn't know anything. I know he's old and unwell, I'm supposed to cut him some slack because of his age but honestly? I'm not interested in speaking to him anymore. I'm tired of always being nice and polite and having him low-key bully and criticize everything I do. People will say that I need to make peace because he might die and you know what? I DON'T GIVE A SHIT.

Sure I'll regret that we didn't have a better relationship, but if the only way we can have a better relationship is for me to smile and act like he's the soul of wit when he laughs about how I never amounted to anything in front of the whole damn family then fuck it. People like that deserve to die unmourned. If other family members want to kiss his ass for whatever reason, that's their business but holy shit have I lost respect for the people who sat there and let him talk shit about me without even trying to stand up for me.

What is everyone doing this weekend?

I am going to work on my crochet project (took a break while needlefelting). Also going to be working on my WoW Classic character, we are having a lot of fun on Burning Crusade. Also, have to start breaking in new shoes.

Tomorrow I am working in the morning. Our office does one saturday a month for people who can's schedule consults during the week. One attorney goes to answer legal questions. This is my first one, finally being trusted to be the one there. It is at the Fort Worth office this time, though, which is a good hour drive.

After that getting hair and nails done. Sunday just resting. Sunday watching either Buffy or Babylon 5 or Doctor Who. HOnestly can't decide.

Tomorrow there is a clothes-mending class in a nearby town's makerspace, and if I can get access to the laser cutter in the local makerspace I'll show that I understood what we went over in the introduction/certification-type class (the laser cutter is apparently VERY persnickety and went out of true so we basically just saw how CorelDraw interfaces with it).

I would like to try to get to the nearby town's farmers' market as well but parking is usually merry hell unless you get when it opens or slightly before.

And some of this is contingent on whether or not I wake up at a decent hour (the mending class is in the afternoon at least)...

Re: Food you do "wrong"

I intentionally add cream to Carbonara. I like it more saucy but don't like it if the taste is too eggy.

I also like to overcook salmon.
