I don't, though. I enjoy male characters that recognize they have emotional issues that require self-discipline, cultivate that discipline, and never ever crash out. It's the self-mastery part that I'm keen on.
Anger is just usually the only emotional issue fictional men are allowed to have.

Any characters who fall under this heading that you (or anyone else here) particularly enjoy?
My first thoughts were Raylan Givens from Justified and Bruce Banner in the MCU, but they both have significant incidents of explosive anger. I just especially love watching them in the moments where you can feel it bubbling under the surface, but it's all tightly controlled through hard-won practice.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)Personally, I'm ok with characters crashing out, in fact I often love it. But how they crash out matters a lot. Hot-mess coping strategies and self-punishing behaviors? I am seated. But if they crash out by taking their feelings out on others, I nope out in a hurry.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)My partner and I were watching Enterprise for basically the first time -- neither of us knew what the ending was going to be. But long before we got to the final episode, we already had a joke going that Trip has two modes in response to stress: (1) genial joke-cracking, and (2) PANICPANICPANIC. He always starts off in the first mode and then when the stress gets too much, he suddenly cracks and starts running around like a headless chicken.
So then when we watched the finale, while we did think it was pretty assholish of the writers to kill a main character in the last episode, we were also pretty amused that Trip went out 100% in-character. Like, his sacrifice probably wasn't even needed (probably they could have handled the situation without him needing to kill himself), it just seemed like he Panicked and did the first thing he could think of.

Fanfic research question, again
(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)I get that the English legal system is in two parts, one type of lawyer represents you to the cops and another type in court. Solicitors and Barristers.
My question is could a pair of brothers set themselves up as a legal firm, with the younger being a criminal solicitor and the elder being a criminal barrister, and just pass cases between themselves? Or is that a conflict of interest?
Anybody here know anything about it?
