It's a meme among my friends that I enjoy male characters with anger issues.

I don't, though. I enjoy male characters that recognize they have emotional issues that require self-discipline, cultivate that discipline, and never ever crash out. It's the self-mastery part that I'm keen on.

Anger is just usually the only emotional issue fictional men are allowed to have.

Any characters who fall under this heading that you (or anyone else here) particularly enjoy?

My first thoughts were Raylan Givens from Justified and Bruce Banner in the MCU, but they both have significant incidents of explosive anger. I just especially love watching them in the moments where you can feel it bubbling under the surface, but it's all tightly controlled through hard-won practice.

My fic weakness is characters recognizing their emotional issues and then going forth and learning how to correct or live with them in a healthy manner and coming out the other side a healthier happier them. It's not about discipline or mastery for me, it's about recognizing a problem and fixing it in a healthy way. I just love fucked up people figuring out how to be happy with their fucked up lives/minds.

So yeah, I definitely get where you're coming from.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I can definitely see how the distinction matters with this. As someone who is squicked by most full-on dark dynamics, but who enjoys dynamics that are weird and a bit problematic, my taste is very often, "I like [X] as a kink, but only when it's handled in a way that minimizes the toxicity/abusive vibes." So I feel like I kind of get where you're coming from with this.

Personally, I'm ok with characters crashing out, in fact I often love it. But how they crash out matters a lot. Hot-mess coping strategies and self-punishing behaviors? I am seated. But if they crash out by taking their feelings out on others, I nope out in a hurry.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any examples where the issue isn't anger? Curious if you have any favorite characters of this type with another issue.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-26 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed OP, even though I don't have a list of such characters in mind.

I actually do not mind the death of Trip in the Star Trek Enterprise finale, the character died doing what he loved: Being incredibly stupid.

I just wonder who got his case of Old Milwaukee he kept in the Engine Coolant Container afterwards.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, this secret amuses me.

My partner and I were watching Enterprise for basically the first time -- neither of us knew what the ending was going to be. But long before we got to the final episode, we already had a joke going that Trip has two modes in response to stress: (1) genial joke-cracking, and (2) PANICPANICPANIC. He always starts off in the first mode and then when the stress gets too much, he suddenly cracks and starts running around like a headless chicken.

So then when we watched the finale, while we did think it was pretty assholish of the writers to kill a main character in the last episode, we were also pretty amused that Trip went out 100% in-character. Like, his sacrifice probably wasn't even needed (probably they could have handled the situation without him needing to kill himself), it just seemed like he Panicked and did the first thing he could think of.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man I tried to like Tripp but he annoyed me so fucking much that alas I did not shed a single tear when he died. He did indeed die doing what he loved OP: being a fucking idiot.

Shane Hollander has terrible taste in architecture. That lakeside glass house monstrosity he calls a cottage is going to kill so many birds.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
But it is gonna feed so many of the local predator population too, as they scavenge the corpses. See, great circle of life and so forth.

That "cottage" offends me. Who builds an all glass house in snow? I guess people who don't have to worry about heating bills. Also yes, the birds. Also, it's just really ugly.

Sometimes I hear a criticism and think "that's false, but it would be true of something else." People say Kingdom Hearts talks and talks about light and darkness, with no clear sense of what those phrases even mean. I thin that would be a true criticism of Marvel's Midnight Suns.

Fanfic research question, again

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
For anyone who knows about the London, England legal system.
I get that the English legal system is in two parts, one type of lawyer represents you to the cops and another type in court. Solicitors and Barristers.

My question is could a pair of brothers set themselves up as a legal firm, with the younger being a criminal solicitor and the elder being a criminal barrister, and just pass cases between themselves? Or is that a conflict of interest?

Anybody here know anything about it?
