Nordic myths are just inaccurate fanfic to begin with anyway.

jsyk it wasn't ignorance, stan lee purposefully reimagined these elements to create a superhero.

Welcome to Hollywood?

If you want to see myths and legends done right, you pretty much just have to read books that are about those myths and only those myths with no frills. Most storytellers are more interested in using elements of myths to suit their own storytelling rather than creating a story about those myths. I don't think it's wrong, but it's annoying if you like the original.

I lol at getting mad at this particular movie over inaccuracies from the Eddas. Even the comic isn't the Eddas. Best just to think of it as characters with the same names.

(also, Hollywood not thinking blonde is BAMF? That's not why they gave Sif dark hair.)

I like seeing different reinterpretations of myth and legend. Shrug. I've been very invested in Norse mythology since I was a kid, but I loved the Thor movie. It's fun.

Also, I loved Loki, but I loved Thor too. It'd be different if the narrative didn't acknowledge Thor's shortcomings, but it very much does.

Just remember that those myths have been interpreteted however the fuck anyone wanted for a long time now.
There are loads of books tearing even those Eddas from one limb to the other because they're full of bullshit. Nobody knows anymore what was right and what was just pulled out of the asses of Snorri & friends.

I just see it as fun, and if it really pisses me off, I close the book, or turn off the movie.

And really, one look at wikipedia could have told you that the Thor comic books garen't even trying to present anything at all properly.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Although not a believer in them myself, I do love the old stories and the Nordic myths but I really can't blame the Marvel comics for being inaccurate. People keep using the excuse that's it's the Marvel version and not the traditional which I can mostly accept I guess.

One thing I give the comics and movie credit for is keeping the old legends alive in the first place and not letting them just fade into obscurity where many may not have read/heard them. Personally, they've recently reignited my love of all mythology in general, not just Norse.

At first I was rolling my eyes, OP, but then I thought of how strict I am when it comes to Greek Mythology, so I think I can relate. It really sucks that Hollywood perverts ancient myths and religions so much.

Slightly related: I'm also sick of blonde characters being casted as non-blonde. It does reinforce the "dumb blonde" stereotype.

inb4 BUT THAT'S NOT AS BAD A RACELIFTING because I know it's not, but it still annoys me.

yeah, it kinda sucks. The Thor comics have never been an accurate representation of the myths, they're trying to tell their own story with characters based on them.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ha. I once irritated a Thor comics fan by raging over all the inaccuracies they had. They finally told me that the comics were their own thing so I should just shut up about it already. :D

So, yeah. You are not alone! I love the Norse legends and it sucks that there hasn't been a truly accurate representation of them in modern pop culture. All too often, you've got stuff like Loki being Odin's son or Odin being a pacifist and Loki being demonized and oh, man. It hurts.

sif's hair is black because loki was jealous and cut off her blonde hair, and then replaced it with enchanted hair made by dwarves. idk why but this ALWAYS bugs me as a reason to omg hate this film, because if they'd just done their research!!! well, it's accurate to the COMICS which the film is BASED ON and if you gave the comics a chance, you'd know wth too. and yet, here we are.

I love the myths, I'd love to see more true depictions of Odin and the gods. I loved Thor too, though I've definitely separated it from the idea of it representing the religion. It represents a superhero story, I'm okay with that.

There's an animated movie out there that's probably more what you're looking for, OP. I think it was called Valhalla? It had Loki and Thor having adventures and getting into trouble, and it was awesome. And it was based on a comic of the same name, if memory serves me.

I thought the plural of Jotunn was Jotnar, not Jotunns. But whatevs.

I had something to say. But then I remembered that I like the movie -and- the mythology and see absolutely no problem in separating them as two different stories, unrelated except in names. Happens a lot, anon, to pretty much every mythology ever. (For what it's worth, I'm a Heathen.)

IDK, I've just seen this posted about five million times on Tumblr. Old discussion is old.

[identity profile] glass-sylph.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I love Norse mythology and stories based on it, but I haven't watched the movie or read the comics. I just have this gut feeling it's going to disappoint me, especially after reading summaries of it.

Although, tbqh, I find it really weird that they turned Loki's mother, Laufey, into his father. ...Which wouldn't have been strange if he didn't have a named father already. (Farbauti)

Anyway, OP, if you want a REALLY terrible story based on Norse mythology, look up Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok. Thor will look like a masterpiece in comparison. I mean seriously, it doesn't get much worse than adorable pink-haired Hel, Freyja being in love with Loki, Odin being a teenage bishie, and Thor forgetting how to return to Asgard and having to do all sorts of stupid jobs to serve as a recurring joke.

Actually the movie does a pretty damn good job of being accurate to the Thor comic book, which is what it's based on (minus Balder the Brave being completely excluded). A comic book which was created close to fifty years ago and intentionally re-wrote Norse mythology in the first place.

As a fan of both the comic book and various books on the 'real' mythology I enjoyed it thoroughly (well, minus a lot of the Earth parts because it felt like they were trying to do two movies simultaneously). Honestly, you're sitting here saying the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century, was the true canon, for a system of belief that was in place for centuries before hand and has very little written history that has survived. It was Snorri's interpretations of old stories and is riddled with contradictions. Fun as shit to read, but come on.

That's like someone saying only Sophocles Electra is 'true' canon and anyone else's interpretation should be burned. Rewriting beloved stories, especially with some of those old school mythologies is a tradition. No one persons interpretation is the correct one, though anyone writing about the Norse or Greek/Roman (lol Marvel Hercules why so ridiculous?) nowadays has a lot of awesome stories they're competing against, especially what little survives from ancient times.
