Yes, sex really isn't as clean, organized or pretty as portrayed by Hollywood. How is that new to anybody?

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP was saying that they can't hate a ship just because it has awful fans.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel, OP. My brothers call me a weeaboo just because every now and then I go on an anime/manga kick and took Japanese for two years in middle/high school (which was about 10 years ago).

I wouldn't mind meeting Jack because he seems like he could be a good person to have no-strings-attached sex with.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you meet your Jack, and that he shows you how beautiful you are.

Perfect comment+icon combo.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
So, bottom line, his fans accused him of racism and he had the AUDACITY to defend himself, only to back down after it actually was explained?

...

That monster! Obviously, whenever you criticize somebody, they have to back down immediately and accept your superior judgment.

Damn, some people are entitled as shit!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Not always. Experiences can really sour a person's feelings towards somethings.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel, every time I mention I'm studying Japanese people are like, "Oh, do you want to move there and draw anime?" No. No, I do not. -_-

But as far as the people who throw weeaboo around casually as a synonym for anyone who likes anime... just ignore them, who cares what the hobby police think?

And I was kind of confused about why you don't want to tell Japanese girls... is it because you're afraid they'll think you're one of those creeps who obsesses over trying to find an authentic nihonjin girlfriend or something? If that's the case, maybe just... wait to mention it until you get to know them and they see that you don't treat Japanese people different from everyone else? I guess that's kinda hard, though, since "What's your major?" is one of the first getting-to-know-you questions that gets asked, but either way, if you can prove by your actions that you're not a creep and that you don't only want to talk to them because of their Asian-ness, hopefully it won't be a big deal.

I've been interested in ASL for years, and, if I'd ever been someplace that would have offered a class in it, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. I started watching Switched at Birth, because I honestly couldn't NOT watch a show called "Switched at Birth," and it sparked my interest again.

Wanting to learn the language is not "fetishizing" it. (But the fangirls who just want to meet a "nice Deaf boy like Emmett" are...but that's a whole other issue.)

[identity profile] viciousimp.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I know that. I didn't misread it.

Though I probably misworded my reply, I'm not too good with getting what I want to say out in the right way sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
lol

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, this is supposed to mean "Subcultures will be judged by their examples".

[identity profile] tenebrais.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just wondering what took so long.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
HAAHHAHA.

I was waiting for one of you morons to show up, bawwing all butthurt from Tumblr.

I was just wondering if the first one would be upset on behalf of minorities, homosexuals, or the gender neutral.

I'd guessed it'd be race and I guessed correctly! You won me an internet!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I know that feel. I speak japanese and I read manga on occasion (not often and not many), and I'll watch an anime per season (last year it was madoka, tiger and bunny, and penguin drum).
I rarely ever bring it up in conversation, even with fandom friends, and yet I know several irl friends who still think of me as "the weeaboo" even though they watch way more anime than me, and they are really annoying about the ones they like, too.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Man, just about the only way to have a good vocabulary is to read a lot. I've never known anyone who actually improved their vocabulary by reading those stupid "increase your word power!" sort of books or by leafing through the dictionary.

And if you read GOOD stuff (yeah, even good fanfiction) it seems only natural you pick up good ways to use words.

I guess the period dramas help too, but with me, I wouldn't even understand what the characters were talking about half the time if I weren't a big reader.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
And you use a picture of a guy who is dying from rabies to make a fandom secret. That's really gross.

[identity profile] illimerent.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
This! So much this.

I don't think he handled the situation very well at all, but I honestly don't think he was trying to be racist at all. (And to be honest, while I can't see Rose and Dave/Roxy and Dirk as being anything other than white, I can definitely see John and Jade/Jake and Jane as being some other race.)

And it's obviously very possible for a non-white person to live in an upper-middle-class suburban home, so I don't really understand the argument that JOHN HAS TO BE WHITE BECAUSE HE LIVES IN AN UPPER-MIDDLE-CLASS SUBURBAN HOME! or whatever.

As for surnames, there's the whole thing about them being born in a laboratory, so that doesn't really matter. (Hell, it's canon that Jade's surname came about because her grandpa had a speech impediment as a baby and mispronounced the name of his dog, and that Egbert was not Nanna's maiden name, so...)

TL;DR: While I do agree that he handled things pretty poorly, I also think he's honestly working on it and that it's quite conceivable that some of the kids are not white.

[identity profile] fairyday.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding? That's great! I can get being put off because of some bad experiences, but hating a ship just because of the fans is being pathetic, not the other way around.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
oh, sorry

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's part of what has pissed me off about art students in general. Too many of them seem completely unaware that what they know is specialized knowledge and not everyone has it, what they do is a skill they developed that other people didn't choose to, and that not everyone who doodles is aiming to make a living from it. So we suck. So we're 'wasting' our efforts on fanart. So we can't always tell if the lighting is spot on or if the CG in the latest big budget animation feature is really top notch. So what? Maybe they're just jealous that we still get to draw for fun but they can't go performing appendectomies for shits and giggles.

I haven't been keeping up with the Simpsons, but

• Feathers woven in to hair is a fad right now. It's true that it's a bit insensitive, but it's not full-out racist.

• The word "bitch" isn't sexist. I know it's a negative connotation with an original definition that vaguely has to do with females (specifically female dogs, which I would like to point out, isn't the same thing as a female human, females of certain species, like dogs and cats, have a tendency to be more territorial and rude to other members of their species than the males, or at least have been observed that way. Calling someone a "dog" has also been an insult, too, it's just not as common)

• I fail to see what the problem with drug use is. It's a thing that actually happens.

• Just because these things are in an episode of the simpsons doesn't mean that it's becoming more like family guy, because the writing styles are still COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, the jokes in family guy are never, never relevant to the plots, which are half-baked anyway. South Park has racist and sexist dialogue, along with drug use, that doesn't mean that south park is <>anything like family guy.

• And it ought to be noted that the actions of the characters do not always reflect upon the feelings of the writers.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I have a rule that new Simpsons writers must not be allowed to view anything over the ninth season. This rule will be enforced as soon as I can get my hands on a load of tanks. Until then, OP can come drink heavily with the rest of the fandom.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, if you're anything like me than any motivation to finish a paper is a miracle. Good for you, OP!
