For today: Aardvarks, Donkeys, Tapirs, Birds and some Bonuses. Also spider!

Hullo! There are two parts to this post. The first comes today, the next tomorrow. The request was for things that were so ugly they're adorable- I'm sort of trying to get at that, or posting animals that are definitely not regarded by most people as cute. Maybe some of them will be to you? Maybe some won't- either way, it's worth a shot! I'll be giving a picture of the adult animals and the baby ones. Do check both of them out- especially for the birds!

I know Spider-man sucks, but keep it in for now, for your friend's sake.

Don't take it so seriously. It's not like you have to act like it's the best movie ever; if your friend brings it up, play Switzerland or change the topic.

AARDVARKS

DONKEYS

source

These are Baudet du Poitous! They really are meant to look like that, yes.

source

source

TAPIRS

The adults look like... well, 'odd' is one way of putting it. I've always seen the babies as little watermelon things with faces and paws, though!

NEWBORN DINOSAURS BABY BIRDS

source

From the source: Three Black Palm Cockatoos siblings, a 3-months old, left, 2-months old, right, and 23-days old are displayed to the media at the Jurong Bird Park in Singapore on Dec. 20, 2010. Black Palm Cockatoos are being bred as part of the Bird Parks on-going birdlife conservation program and it is the first time the park has hatched 3 birds in consecutive months.

This is what they'll look like when they're fully grown!

source

It's a Kea parrot chick! That has sadly been described as being a cross between an alien and a roast chicken. Trust me, this is not the ugliest picture of it there was. There is uglier.

On the other hand, what it grows up to be... well, check it out!

source

Now this tiny pgymy falcon isn't much to look at, and it doesn't really grow up large, either. But when it does, it's definitely incredibly adorable! One of the cutest birds of prey there is.

BONUS ALPACA FASHION DISASTERS

Alpacas are actually pretty cute normally, but these guys...

And of course...

Spider!

This guy is absolutely for real. It's scientific name is Ephebopus cyanognathus, but more commonly goes by the much cooler title of Blue Fang Skeleton Tarantula. Why Blue Fang? Well, that's because when it grows up, it lookslike this-

Unlike many other spiders, they really like to burrow and don't go up in trees at all. This makes them less impressive as pets- sure, they look cool! But they're shy things, and more often than not will be hiding inside their little dirt homes that they've built for themselves.

Also- I know there are people who read this who might be scared of spiders. This post, and this comment in particular might be good reading if you're looking to find out more or maybe figure out how you could be more comfortable around them! It's got cute pictures and video links as well, and isn't very long to read. Do give it a go. (:

Nah, you're not alone. I liked a lot of things about the show, but I felt like the ending was a huge letdown. I wanted a *way* better solution for both Madoka and Homura.

Me too, don't feel bad about it.

Happy Canada Day

My fellow Canadians. I'm gonna get stoned to night.

I liked the ending because it was better than the alternative (everyone gets stuck in an endless cycle, etc).

DeviantArt hasn't been fun since 2002.

About the het vs. slash vs. femmeslash vs. gen thing

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So I've noticed that in some fandoms a lot of fandoms, there's a bit of tension between gen fans versus people who prefer romance fic, and that second group is further divided into het vs. slash, and the slashers are even further divided into guy-slash vs. lady-slash... and I really don't get it. This whole thing seems to me like shipping wars taken to a different level, but it seems that the people who'll argue about this stuff are generally also the same people who think shipping wars are stupid.

And now I am wondering two things:
1) Is it weird that I find this confusing and kind of hypocritical, or am I missing something?
2) Are there any other fans who'll read pretty much anything as long as it's got a good plot, or is it just me? :(

Same here, OP. Same here.

One of my friends didn't like it either, he said it was too happy of an ending, and just too deus ex machina I guess? I wasn't really paying that much attention to him because I like happy endings.

I think a lover would have noticed that the scars on his face were a paint job.

Or, y'know, maybe they kept the masks on.

I get that there are a lot of racial and trans* reasons a person wouldn't want to associate with feminism, but a throwaway line about not being a feminist in an otherwise very feminist secret doesn't seem like the place where that would be brought up?

Like..just leave that line out..idgi

Oh I have a blindness fetish too. Probably not the most politically correct to have, but ah fuck it.

One way to get more fic/art in a fandom is to make sure people know about it.

Get involved in challenge/exchange communities like rarewomen, femalefest and Yuletide - and when the nomination phase opens, sell the hell out of what you love. Ppeople can't fall in love with something they've never heard of/seen.

(I can't speak for the other two, but I KNOW that Yuletide has fandom promotion posts prior to nomination.)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
To add to this, I would add that there's no one correct "way" to be a feminist, just like there's no "one true way" to be gay or straight or christian or what have you. That doesn't mean the word only applies to a certain subset of people.

There used to be one girl in one of my fandoms who did this, and it was so annoying, especially since her critiques would boil down to "This character shouldn't be IC or topping, make him a blushing uke!" I should have done this xD

OTP. My true otp or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I was enjoying this secret until the "bonus" part... I think it's cool that I can flip the cover and have the Shepard I play facing out at me, but I don't get angry when people who play the male Shepard want to see their version. If I can happily have my female version, I'm not going to get angry when someone else wants to have their male version. No reason to get upset, OP, just point out that the cover can be reversed to show the male Shepard. Then they have the version that they want while you have the version you want. No harm, no foul.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it well enough. Didn't think it was brilliant and I doubt I'll ever watch it again, but it was a decent watch.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess is that the name is some kind of in joke having to do with Nate Ruess's old (better IMO) band being called The Format.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Finding someone boring can have nothing has nothing to do with a person's gender. It's because of things like speaking ability and topics and pacing. You are not less of a feminist because you found a woman speaking in public or on tv boring. I have never heard Gloria before. Maybe she is one of those people who is a brilliant writer but a mediocre public speaker. It happens. I've read biographies about actors who are awesome on stage, but bad at being entertaining off it.
