Death threats are definitely uncool, but there's nothing wrong with letting the author know how you feel about their portrayal of you town.

Also...did you ever think that just because your town was an okay place to be an atheist, maybe it wasn't so great for people who were different in other ways? You say that it's not racist or homophobic...I hope that's true.

I have to seriously doubt the loving environment you grew up in if you think death threats are okay, and especially if you think death threats are okay in reaction to fic. That is not okay.

A letter explaining how offended you are and how awesome your town is? Yes. Death threats? No.

Death threats are never a good idea anon, or warranted. While it might be unfortunate that your town was 'bad-mouthed', this kind of thing isn't entirely uncommon, and it's not the end of the world.

If you had really wanted to write a letter, you should have, but you should've done your best to tell the author about how awesome your town and the people in it are, and to be as polite as possible so they would actually take you seriously.

...I mean, geez, death threats isn't going to HELP your case.

Now I want to ask the book, and if it's the one that came to my mind. 'Cause my hometown's been mentioned unflatteringly in a book too, and there's a reason I moved 3000 miles to get away from the fuckers.

Seriously, we've been described as foul, rude, perverted, vulgar, pretentious, superficial... I don't even read books that mention my city anymore because it's just so untrue and ridiculous.

If you still feel bad about it, write the author a letter (minus the death threats plz) and give them constructive criticism, and maybe tell them how disappointed and disheartened you are about how things were portrayed in the book.

I've seen my home town mention maybe three times in total (twice by the same person) in fiction, and the first time it was by my favourite comedic actor who described it as "the toilet of the world." Yeah, I laughed it off, and still love the comedian who described it as such. I understand feeling angry if you felt your town was misrepresented in such a horrible way, but death threats are never cool. Just shrug it off, or inform the person (politely) how wrong they are. Sending them death threats is only going to reinforce their opinion of your town!

Maybe the author had a different experience with your town, perhaps years before you were even born? Maybe the author just picked your town's name out of a hat or off of Google?

Ugh, okay. OP it is wrong, and yeah...Kinda messed up that your reaction was to want to send death threats, and it's...not a good thing, to put it politely, that you still regret not doing it sometimes.

Oh my gosh I'm lolling at you taking this slight against your home town so personally. Are you from somewhere where there are common, IRL hurtful, even racist stereotypes against people of your geography?

Else why would a single author trigger this reaction - unless you're super super lolariously parochial?

I'm used to jokes about Australians, I'm used to jokes about Territorians, I've even had people on online inc. fandom forums decide my location is a case for making fun of me or calling me stupid! But I can't say I've been angry enough to ever wish death on anyone for it, nor anyone I know who lives here, we just laugh them off as ignorant.... O___<
