I‘ve been reading a WIP and every time I read the title, which is a fairly commonplace turn of phrase, I start singing ‘The last one to know; The last one to show; I was the last one; You thought you'd see there’ from the song Friends in Low Places. Does anyone else do this?

And I’m not talking about anything that is intentionally trying to evoke an association – like something titled Doe, a Deer. Something like the phrase ‘Want to believe’ making you immediately think of the X-Files, even though that phrase is fairly generic.

Do you see cherry pie and think ‘and a damn fine cup of coffee’? Do you hear Bust a Move and think of that stupid TV movie Camp Cucamonga?

Rambling bisexual's lament

So last night I went to this party where I knew maybe three people- it was mostly okay although several of them ended up crashing at my house. Anyway, there were some people I thought I could be friends with, until one of them suddenly said "Oh yeah, [person x] is with a guy now after claiming she was bisexual." To which another person replied "Yeah, like most bisexuals. They make a choice in the end."

So I felt too uncomfortable to say anything, particularly as I was "out" to no one at this party, but that seemed like a really dumb opinion verging on "bisexuals don't exist". I mean, unless you're poly, you're going to be with one person at a time- and being with that one person doesn't negate your sexual attraction to anyone else, it just means you've made whatever kind of commitment to that one person.

Am I nuts? Was there nothing to get offended about?

Writing rape roleplay

I'm trying to write a story about an established couple roleplaying a rape scene. The "aggressor" Adam is the one with the fantasy that their partner Beatrice is happy to play out, though she's admitted to being nervous. They have safewords and aspects that Beatrice has said yes, maybe and definitely not to. It's written from Adam's third person POV. I've read every other kind of POV but not this one so I have no frame of reference. What I want to do is make it clear throughout that it's not real, and have Adam thinking about looking after Beatrice and how much he loves her for doing this, but would that ruin the "fantasy" part? Would it take away some of the thrill if he isn't...in the moment? I've only read that kind of thing in an aggressor's POV if they're fulfilling the fantasy for their partner, where obviously they're not going to be as into it. But I want him to be!

Anyway, I'm going round in circles here. If you have any thoughts about this, please give me them! I'm feeling very blocked at the moment.

So, the next time you submit a secret, just stop and take a little time to think. "Did I make it clear in my secret what fandom I was referencing?" If there is no need to be vague about your fandom, secret target, etc., then label your fandom. It helps to know what you are talking about and helps you get better responses from us rather than general confusion.

Real-world terminology in fake-world fanfics

So I got into this topic with a fandom friend a few months ago. She was really needing to use the phrase 'Stockholm syndrome' in a fanfic for Final Fantasy VII. I'm not sure what decision she eventually made on this one - it's doubly hazy because the FFVII localisation uses some real-world-specific terms (eg. 'Korean bbq').

Last night, I had the urge to use the word 'yorker' metaphorically in some non-real-world fic dialogue. This is just obviously a bad idea as all my cricket-related headcanons are so hilariously not supported by canon I don't even (I guess I just don't understand the idea of living in a world without TMS), AND it's specifically related to a real place but goddamnit I like cricket :( I guess not even the 'all fantasy characters are british' rule gets me a pass on this.

How much does this stuff bother you? I feel like the age and pervasiveness of a term has a lot to do with it - I wouldn't hesitate to use 'sandwich' in a fic for any setting, but 'Stockholm syndrome' is something I'd baulk at. I also worry about terminology related to an activity that is not present in canon, eg, sports terms (eg. 'knock [something] out of the park') or industry-specific metaphors, or accidentally using terms derived from high technology in a canon with a historical setting. Also, for writers, what's the worst one you've ever been guilty of yourself?

I once read a short story I really want to read again, but I have no idea where to find it and can't remember the author or title or the names of the characters.

It's about two guys in a tiny spaceship in some futuristic setting. One's the first-person narrator, who's this cynical shallow douchebag, and one's this shy, nerdy, quiet guy who mainly just follows the first guy's lead. They come across two women in another tiny spaceship, a pretty bubbly ditzy one, and a grouchy untalkative one with a monobrow and giant boots. The narrator wants to get some action, so he convinces the nerdy guy to come onto the women's spaceship to meet up with them.

After the women keep asking questions, it's finally revealed (to the women and the readers at the same time, because of how the narrative is set up) that the two guys know that the universe is going to end in an hour or so, and their job is to go back in time every few hours to a few hours before the end of the universe to...collect energy or antimatter or something (can't remember the specifics), and that's what they do all day, every day, over and over and over, just watch the universe almost come to an end before escaping back in time again. I don't know, but I think the guys might've been aliens (I can't remember too well).

They think the women are going to throw a shit fit, but they don't. They're just stunned and no one knows what to say and it's all awkward. The narrator tells the nerdy guy to come along back to their own spaceship, but the nerdy guy tells him no, he's sick of sitting around trapped in the stretch of time just before the universe ends doing the same shit over and over, and he's going to stay with the women and die with them.

The narrator rants and raves and curses and pleads to no avail, and finally storms back to his spaceship and takes off, and thinks about his lot in life and his job and wonders what it would be like to let himself die.

Does this ring a bell for anyone?
